The Motion Picture Sound Editors' (Mpse) 62nd annual Golden Reel Awards honored a full spread of films Sunday night. "American Sniper," "Birdman," "Unbroken," "Get On Up" and "Big Hero 6" all walked away with hardware. At the Oscars, "Sniper," "Birdman" and "Unbroken" are up against "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Interstellar." "Birdman" won the Cinema Audio Society's mixing prize Saturday and could well win both sound fields. Or it could split with "Sniper," or Clint Eastwood's war film could take both, etc. Lots of options seem evident. (And the sound categories, by the way, are the only places for "Unbroken" fans to speak up.) The final guild/industry group to declare nominees did so this afternoon as the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) spoke up with a roll call of players for the 62nd Golden Reel Awards. On the film side of things, "Birdman" and "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" had the best showing with three nominations each. I've been wondering if the latter could slide into Oscar play this year, but it's hard to gauge here, as "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" had a nice Mpse showing, too. In the effects/foley category, "Fury" is featured as well, also a strong possibility to pop up. All other expected players ("American Sniper," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Unbroken," etc.) are featured. We'll see how the sound branch shakes it all out tomorrow but I'm a little more confused by where they'll end up going than usual, I must say. Check out...

The latest effort by History to fill its programming slate with as little historical content as possible is The Legend of Shelby the Swamp Man, a comical reality series spun off from the network’s hit show Ax Men. The show chronicles what Shelby Stanga, the owner of Swamp Man Logging, gets up to at home in the Bayou when he is not logging. This includes buying a pirate ship to be his new home after his houseboat is destroyed in a hurricane, helping a well-to-do family rid their house of a swamp rat infestation, and hiring a surprisingly preppy voodoo priestess to cleanse the ship of any spirits. He punctuates these shenanigans with frequent outbursts of catchphrases like “Son of a bitch!” and “Here we go!” in his nearly-indecipherable but always enthusiastic twang. A character in every sense of the word, Shelby is the kind of guy who gets...

Since its third season, History's reality show "Ax Men" -- which recently ended its sixth season -- has featured Shelby "Swamp Man" Stanga, who retrieves valuable sunken timber from the bottom of southern Louisiana's Atchafalaya Swamp.
Of all the colorful loggers featured on the show, Stanga -- who's been living in the swamps north of New Orleans since he was 9 -- may be furthest out of the box.
He doesn't wear a great deal; few outsiders can understand a word he says; he's prone to taking outrageous chances with equipment, brown swamp water and thunder-and-lightning storms; and his dog, Willy, moves just enough to prove he's neither dead nor a stuffed animal.
Airing Tuesdays, History's "The Legend of Shelby the Swamp Man" is an eight-episode, half-hour series that has followed Stanga on his quest to buy a new houseboat to replace the one that got wrecked in Hurricane Isaac.

Things took a dangerous turn on "Ax Men" for Gabe Rygaard. He was nearly crushed by a massive falling tree when the tailhold broke on the machine the men use. Gabe was lucky he was quick on his feet as he was about to dodge out of the way of the tree before it crashed to the ground.
Luckily, no one was killed in the accident, but it did slow their work for the day down to a grinding halt. The narrator explained that it would take the rest of the day to repair.

DJ was horsing around as usual on "Ax Men," but reality kicked him pretty had. Unfortunately, the severity of his situation may cost him his position on the team. There's a time and a place for goofing off, and this job site clearly wasn't it.
A suspended log doesn't seem like the sturdiest thing to be jumping up and down on anyway, but that didn't stop DJ from going at it. Unfortunately, his footing wasn't as steady as he'd hoped, and he fell from the log. Worse than that, he landed in such a way that he either twisted or broke his ankle.
"F*ck, I'm an idiot!" DJ declared, pounding himself on his helmet. He wasn't able to get himself up and had to be carried piggyback from the scene. If the ankle is broken,he's off the job. One moment of horseplay could cost him everything he'd been working toward.

On "Ax Men," Shelby’s always quite the crazy old coot, but on this week’s episode he really drove that home. Literally. When his gate wouldn’t open, instead of looking for the key, he drove over it.
After the narrator notes that “The clock is ticking, and Shelby won’t let his own locked gate slow him down," his cousin Belinda yells his name.
“Look what you made me do!" Shelby snaps, to which Belinda replies, “Yippie kye yay!”
Yep -- that gate was really, really broken. And Shelby and his cousin Belinda just continued down the highway.
On Twitter, viewers said Shelby and his antics are basically the whole reason they watch this show.
And Shelby’s Facebook page was blowing up too...
With fans saying they just wish Shelby would get his own show already.
"Ax Men" airs on Sundays at 9 p.m. Est on History.

A wild fight on "Ax Men" that involved trees as weapons. It's not every day you can use a tree to knock someone down, but that's exactly what happened during the latest brush-up on the hit reality series. DJ Jeremiah got into a fight with Craig Rygaard, and older man, but it didn't get down to fisticuffs. That's perhaps because the older man was still in the crane, and he had a tree in his grip.
So he did what any "deranged" person -- as one viewer put it on Twitter -- would do and took a swing with the crane.
"Turn around so I can see that mark on your hat!" he shouted, before making contact with the tree and knocking DJ over. Craig had put a black "X" on DJ's helmet, telling the younger man that he didn't belong there.
Even after the tree hit, the brawl never escalated beyond a screaming match,...

Greetings from the apocalypse, and welcome to the new weekly feature where our lone warrior gives you the play-by-play for how your filmgoing weekend can unfold, Friday-to-Sunday, morning-to-night.
No, the Mayan doomsday didn't actually come to pass, but we are in the moviegoing wasteland known as January. Get out your grandfather's Geiger counter buried under the porno mags in his fallout shelter, because the risk of contamination is high from the radioactive lineup of post-Christmas studio dumps. As our nation does a "Thelma & Louise" over the fiscal cliff, we're diving head-first into the cinematic 'pockyclypse that is 2013, and with my help you just might survive the long nuclear winter.

Fridays, Discovery Channel continues its fascination with Alaska with two reality-based hourlong shows, airing back to back.
First up is "Bering Sea Gold: Under the Ice," a five-part series from executive producer Thom Beers ("Deadliest Catch," "Ax Men," "Ice Road Truckers") that takes off from his existing Discovery show, "Bering Sea Gold," in which miners seek gold under the waters off Nome during the summer. That's dangerous enough, but here, they venture out to explore beneath four feet of solid ice in winter.
The show follows three gold-mining teams and their driven skippers, who rely on courage, clear thinking, focus and cooperation to wrest treasure from the seabed without losing their lives to frigid water, whipping winds and frostbite.
Nancy Daniels, Discovery's executive vice president for production and development, tells Zap2it, "The American dream is very much alive, though as you can see on 'Bering Sea Gold: Under the Ice,...

It’s a done deal. I’ve learned that FremantleMedia this week will announce the long-rumored appointment of Thom Beers as CEO of FremantleMedia North America. The prolific producer will succeed longtime Fmna CEO Cécile Frot-Coutaz who on July 1st assumed her new position as CEO of the entire FremantleMedia company, which is owned by Rtl. Beers is already in the Fmna fold after the company acquired 75% in his Original Prods. in 2009 for a reported $50 million. He also held a CEO title for 13 years, since launching his Original Prods in 1999. He remained Original CEO after the company’s acquisition by Fmna. There have been a slew of rumored candidates for the Fmna CEO job since Frot-Coutaz’s promotion was announced in April. The list included outside contenders as well as a strong internal candidate, COO Donna Redier Linsk. Beers has produced more than 1,400 hours of original programming, including some of...

'Deadliest Catch' and 'Storage Wars' producer Thom Beers tells stories of 'America's Lost Treasures'
On Independence Day, Wed., July 4, National Geographic Channel and Thom Beers, the producer behind such hit reality shows as "Deadliest Catch," "Ax Men," "Ice Road Truckers" and "Storage Wars," set out to find bits of American history kept in the basements, attics and closets of ordinary folks, in "America's Lost Treasures."
In the 10-episode series, hosts Curt Doussett (above at right) and Kinga Phillipps (below at right) traveled around the country on an "Antiques Roadshow"-type tour, looking at items people brought in to local museums, which they believed had historic significance.
But there's a twist -- in each instance, experts are called in to determine the truth or falsehood of the stories behind these objects. Then at the end, one object is chosen to join a special exhibit at the National Geographic Museum in Washington, D.C., coming in 2013. In addition, the owner of the winning artifact receives $10,000.

The two-hour Season 5 Finale of "Ax Men" (Sun., 9 p.m. Et on History) saw the men of Big Gun logging have a dangerously close call.
A piece of equipment malfunctioned and sent a pile of logs hurtling downhill toward where the men were working.
Luckily they all managed to jump clear, with a hurt knee the only injury.

Movie Theater Manager: Excuse me, sir, you Have to leave.
Jordan Hoffman: No. No. I don't want to. I want to watch "Avengers" again and again.
Movie Theater Manager: Yes, we know that. You came for our 1 pm screening and now it's past midnight. We're closing. You can come back tomorrow. Again.
Jordan Hoffman: Oh, please let me stay. I'll scrub the floors, empty the garbage and add the radioactive waste to the nacho dip. Just play the movie one more time.
And scene.
Don't let the above tragedy happen to You! This summer (which we've already established is the greatest fanboy summer) there is a surefire way to avoid doldrums between movies. Sell some platelets (no, not dinnerware with the Millenium Falcon painted on it – the stuff in your blood) so you have some dough to take a little piece of the movie home with ya.

On "Ax Men" (Sun., 9 p.m. Et on History) Sunday night Shelby Stanga's new helper Davi had a rough day.
First, Davi got stuck in a tree and dangled helplessly over the river. Eventually he gave up on the idea of Shelby coming to the rescue so he let go of the branch and dropped into the water.
However, when he took off his heavy boots to let his feet dry out, Davi revealed that he had a truly hideous case of toenail fungus.
The infection was so bad, in fact, that Davi said of his toenails, "I gotta pull 'em off every week to get new ones."

Logging is one of the most storied professions in Americana, and Shelby is a definite enthusiast on "Ax Men" (Sun., 9 p.m. Et on History). The trade has seen some exciting innovations over the years, including the wild idea of creating log rafts to float down the rivers to the mills. It was far cheaper than hauling them over land or bothering with some kind of boat.
Legend spoke of a lost raft that never made it to the mill. A raft Shelby claims to have spent the last half of his life looking for. So he was absolutely thrilled when he found a massive log underwater. Even moreso when he pulled it out of the water and found on it the proof he was looking for that this was indeed one of those logs.
There were holes through the log where Shelby says it was pinned together with the other logs.

On "Ax Men" (Sun., 9 p.m. Et on History) Sunday night fan favorite Shelby Stanga took advantage of a thunderstorm to indulge in a so-called "cajun bath."
According to Shelby, "a rain bath is the best one you can get."

No granny drawers for Mrs. Stanga though -- Shelby was proudly sporting her pink thong.

It was an explosive installment of "Ax Men" (Sun., 9 p.m. Et on History) this week, with two different kinds of explosions rocking the crew. The most dangerous was when five gallons of gasoline exploded on one of the boats. That said, some of the fans cried foul about that scene on the show's Facebook page.
Ken Schaffer wrote, "Anyone else notice something fishy about Uncle Bucks boat engine fire? Camera was on the engine, you could hear the engine trying to start, clearly, but the flywheel wasn't turning? Hmmm, can you say rigged for ratings!" Another commenter, Vicki Fox, concurred, breaking down some questionable bits in that scene.
There was no rigging of the second explosion, though there were plenty of beeps. Greenhorn Josh did not handle himself well after finding out his credit card had been mischarged at the motel. A lapse in judgment and decorum that ultimately cost him his job.

An old rival didn't like the way Shelby and new helper Davi were working the Louisiana bayou so he picked up his bow and arrows and started shooting at them.
Shelby advised everyone to duck and then gunned his boat's engine as the arrows rained down around them. Who knew that loggers faced so many varied hazards in their line of work?
