It's Ada Russsell's first day as the Nursing Sister in charge of Wellington ward. She is confident, capable and loves her work. Her personal situation with Dr. James Walton becomes more complicated when he proposes. She knows that if she marries, she will have to leave the hospital. Hospital Chairman Sydney Holland is still busily fundraising but his immediate concern is the impending visit of Queen Alexandra, one of the hospital's most generous patrons. It's also the start of new careers for several nursing probationers including Ethel Bennett who is assigned to the Receiving Room and Laura Goodley who is assigned to the UV radiation treatment room. Dr. Millais Culpin, an Australian, treats a variety of cases including a gang member who is shot and a woman giving birth at at home an living in horrible conditions. It's all hands on deck when an industrial accident results in several severely injured workmen. For Matron Luckes, a visit to the hospital by someone from her past give her cause to review the choices she's made in her life
