On-the-fly programming which broke new ground in UK
shakercoola3 June 2022
A British TV travelogue show; A daytime show broadcast on Channel Four which was beamed live from famous locations around the UK. For example, Cowes Week regatta on Isle of Wight, London Zoo, Silverstone race circuit. It had a mixture of pre-arranged short interviews with local people of note and spontaneous chats with local people along the way. It was often an open-ended show. Regular presenters included Paddy Haycocks and Andy Kershaw who worked unscripted, mic'd up and walking with a cameraman so there was often the frisson that anything could happen next. Pete McCarthy and Andy Kershaw alternated as hosts of a Friday evening show covering adult-audience topics and sometimes broadcast from other countries. The programme was a new format at the time owing to the new lightweight technology and satellite links available. It was a style of outside broadcasting adopted by modern news channels.
