At a time when the world is changing at an unquantifiable pace, when menacing world powers threaten everything we hold dear, we often look to the movies to bring the chaos into focus. In 2017, even the best escapism came with a dose of harsh truths about struggles facing civilization today, and the best movies went to places woefully ignored by the culture at large. When the mood of the moment is #resist and the future often looks more like a fake-news frenzy than the audacity of hope, the resilience of this art form is in sync with the zeitgeist.
I stand by the credo that anyone who thinks this was a bad year for the movies simply hasn’t seen enough of them. As the years progress, my own year-end tallies continue to grow. I offered 16 highlights at the end of 2016; here are 17 for 2017. Watch them all, try to make...

In John McPhail’s gorehound musical “Anna and the Apocalypse,” one of the standout world premieres at this year’s Fantastic Fest, our high school heroine (Ella Hunt) sleeps through the start of a worldwide zombie attack, slips on her headphones, steps out her front door, and begins to sing. “It’s a beautiful day!” belts Anna. Behind her, one neighbor dies, another falls out of a window, and as the camera pulls back, we see her small Scottish town is on fire. Yesterday, her dad (Mark Benton), the school janitor, found out she’s skipping college for a gap year in Australia, the class bully Nick (Ben Wiggins) propositioned her in the cafeteria, and her dorky best friend John (Malcolm Cumming) nearly lost his job when he accidentally thwacked their co-worker with a bowling shoe. Today, she dances down the street, swinging on light poles like Gene Kelly, totally...

2017-08-30T13:56:24-07:00Is 'Game of Thrones''s Tormund Alive or Dead?class="p1">
We all came away from this week's season finale of GoT with the unsettling fear that Tormund, one of our favorite characters, might be dead. It's impossible to know for sure, unless the actor who plays Tormund is willing to spill the beans....
Via The Hollywood Reporter.
[Warning: This story contains spoilers for the season seven finale of HBO's Game of Thrones, "The Dragon and the Wolf."]
With so much time spent dwelling on the death of Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) and the fall of the Wall, few people have stopped to consider the very grim possibility that two other fan-favorite characters met their maker in the season seven finale of Game of Thrones.
The final scene of the episode, called "The Dragon and the Wolf," featured Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) and Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer) helplessly watching as the Night King, riding an undead Viserion, pounded the wall with a steady stream of ice-blue zombie-dragon fire.

She’s a busy lady as of late, and Kristen Bell gave her fans quite the thrill as she arrived at ABC Studios in Times Square on Monday (March 10).
The “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” babe kicked off her time on “Good Morning America” by answering a fan-submitted question- “I want to know if you could have dinner with three people, who would it be? Alive or dead?”
Bell explained, “Wow. Whoa. That's a very good question. Probably -- Audrey Hepburn. Malcolm Gladwell, and Richard Pryor. I think would be a good dinner party.”
And after gushing over her forthcoming “Veronica Mars” flick, due in theaters this Friday (March 14), Kristen discussed her No Kids campaign ( GossipCenter is a member!).
She noted, “I think after having a baby we realized how ridiculous it is that our children are roped into this sort of paparazzi issue. They're extremely aggressive on the street. They run red lights around schools.

Only on a show like "Castle" would parental love be expressed via a high body count.
But it was love that motivated the rescue of Alexis (Molly Quinn) in "Hunt," the second episode of this two-part story of kidnapping and long-lost family. In the end, the day was saved, and Castle (Nathan Fillion) even got an odd but touching reunion with the father he never knew he had.
In case you forgot
The first part of this story focused on the kidnapping of Alexis and her college friend, Sara El-Masri. Since Sara's parents were rich and powerful Egyptians with lots of enemies, it was assumed that Alexis was taken solely out of convenience.
From here, things got weird quickly. The girls weren't where the FBI expected them to be. The initial kidnapper turned up tortured. Alexis tried to escape, only to find herself on a Paris rooftop.

On an remarkably sunny October day the crowds gathered outside the Empire cinema in London’s Leicester Square to celebrate the premiere of the second Johnny English movie, which we at HeyUGuys have been tracking over recent months. Rowan Atkinson arrived in the amazing Rolls Royce from the film and after being interviewed by the waiting TV crews came and spoke to HeyUGuys (Hug) and the rest of the press (Rotp) in the media area.

Rowan Atkinson – Johnny English
[crowd cheers "Rowan"!]
Ra: This can’t be a good environment for audio can it? [chuckles]
HeyUGuys: Back when you were doing the credit card adverts and saying lines like “smell the touareg camp fires” you must have know you were on to a good idea but did you realise just how good?
Ra: The good thing about those original credit card commercials was that they were very “filmic”, they were like little movies, so...

Alright anyone who has met me, peeped at my bookcases or read anything I've written on this here lovely website knows that I have a sick and crippling case of Anglophilia. I strong-armed a young British girl this summer into teaching me how to make scones. There is no limit to my madness. So it's no surprise that when I sat down (steaming cuppa in my hand) to make a list of actresses I would cast in the role of my grandmother, every single one had "Dame" in front of her name. I settled, ultimately, on Dame Maggie Smith because I adore the heck out of every role she plays. Truly sneering and snobby in Gosford Park, shrilly imperious but kindly in the Harry Potter films and downright queenly in the recent "Downton Abbey" series. I love her, I want to have a gossip with her over tea. I want...
