Padma Lakshmi’s post-Top Chef career may veer further into comedy, as the popular former host of the hit reality competition show shops around a comedy series script and continues to host her stand-up comedy night in Brooklyn.
In a wide-ranging and revealing New Yorker profile, out on Tuesday, Lakshmi tells writer Helen Rosner that the series was developed with Bridesmaids and Spy director Paul Feig, adding that it is a “hard comedy,” but declining to share its title or more about the show’s pitch. Lakshmi plans to produce and star in the series, she told the magazine.
Lakshmi has managed to become a household name, or at least an icon of the sensual potential of food, over her two decades as host of Bravo’s Top Chef. She exited the reality competition series in 2023 after 19 seasons, she said, “after much soul searching.” Kristen Kish filled her shoes...

Even with all the foods Padma Lakshmi gets to eat “Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi,” there have still been very distinctive cuisines that really left an impression on the host. “The Cambodian episode for me was an eye-opener because I loved Thai food and I’ve had the ocean food but I’ve never had Cambodian food,” she tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: TV Documentary panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). But what made it even more memorable was it exposed her to community that she did not know was near where she grew up in Massachusetts. “I did not know that there was this community of refugees and asylum seekers that revitalized this tiny New England town which had fallen on some hard times.”

Celebrating television might feel like a wasted effort right now, especially since 11,500 writers and 160,000 actors are walking the picket lines for the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. But it would be unfair to overlook the extraordinary work of so many Emmy-worthy creatives, even if the ongoing dispute between the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers prevents writers and actors from talking about the very series that got them a ticket to the 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards in the first place. Sadly, everyone will have to wait until January 2024 to see who will accept their just rewards. But this year’s Contenders Television: The Nominees virtual livestream event that kicks off Saturday at 10 a.m. Pt will certainly make it worth the wait.

Since the TV academy officially established a distinction between informational and documentary programs in 2013, the former genre’s Emmy category – which eventually became known as Best Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special – has been dominated by multi-winners Anthony Bourdain, Leah Remini, and Stanley Tucci. As the presenter and co-executive producer of “Searching for Italy” (which is in need of a home after being dropped by CNN), Tucci is currently seeking his third consecutive win in the category along with an even mix of old and new co-nominees.
Best Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special differs from most Primetime Emmys in that it is a non-competitive area award that is given to any nominee that earns the approval of 90% of voters in the academy’s documentary peer group. This means that the five programs in the 2023 lineup are not vying for a single trophy and could all potentially prevail. However, given the fact...

The Television Critics Association (TCA) announced the winners of the organization’s 39th annual TCA Awards, with “Succession” (HBO) and “The Bear” (FX) both winning more than one top prize.
While the TCA summer tour, including the awards ceremony, was canceled in lieu of the WGA and SAG strikes, the group has chosen to announce the winners of the 2022-23 TV season online. The organization also announced filmmaker Mel Brooks as its Career Achievement recipient and “The Carol Burnett Show” as its Heritage Award honoree.
In the two non-gendered acting categories, Individual Achievement In Drama and Individual Achievement In Comedy, the respective winners were “Better Call Saul” star Rhea Seehorn and “Poker Face” co-creator/star Natasha Lyonne. Meanwhile, the aforementioned “Succession” not only won Outstanding Achievement In Drama for the second year in a row (third time total), the HBO series also won the prestigious Program of the Year award for its final season.

This year, the Emmy nominees for outstanding hosted nonfiction series include Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy (2021 and 2022’s winner) and Taste the Nation With Padma Lakshmi. It’s fair to say these food travelogues owe their entrée into awards contention to Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, which dominated the category in the 2010s and brought credibility to food programming in a field that had previously overlooked it.
CNN’s Parts Unknown, which won 12 Primetime Emmys over 12 seasons — including six for outstanding informational series (as the category was known from 2013 to 2019) — was Bourdain’s fourth series following A Cook’s Tour and Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations on the Travel Channel, and Food Network’s The Layover. The Television Critics Association awards nominations went public Friday, and it was great news for some series and sad news for others.
The Last of Us, The Bear, and Succession are in a three-way tie with five nominations apiece.
All three shows were expected to get some awards love, so their performances here are not surprising.
The Bear has been a bonafide hit for FX and Hulu, but there were some more first-year shows in the mix, too.
Andor, Jury Duty, Shrinking, Interview With the Vampire, and Poker Face were all well-represented.
Somewhat surprising: Ted Lasso and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel were shut out.
The news comes after both series have been big hits on the awards front and could set a precedent for upcoming awards shows.
Awards will be handed out at an in-person ceremony on August 7, 2023.

I look forward to the day there are many more Asian American TV creators and filmmakers who get the chance to tell multifaceted stories with bigger budgets. It’s great to see every ethnicity popping up in regular scenes in films and television just going through regular, everyday problems, and not just addressing problems related to being that ethnicity. I’m going to open this up a bit to include some of my favorite Asian characters from TV, as well as some of my favorite Asian directors and films:
TV creators and characters:
1. “Taste the Nation With Padma Lakshmi”: I have to plug my own show, obviously, because it’s so gratifying to be able to help tell these incredible stories.
2. Mindy Kaling, “Never Have I Ever”: I stayed up until 5 a.m. binge-watching the first season with my daughter — we just inhaled it. I love it so much.

As the Hollywood blockbuster machine continues to dust itself off and release some early winter hits, Hulu is going in a bit of a different direction with its list of new releases for November 2021.
There are no big Hulu original films of note this month. Instead there’s a whole host of original series. The TV parade starts on Nov. 5 with the release of Animaniacs season 2. Also getting a second season this month is monarchal comedy The Great on Nov. 19. The most intriguing series, however, is animated Marvel comedy Marvel’s Hit Monkey. As its name so graciously implies, this is a show about a hit monkey…as in monkey assassin. Naturally the hit monkey is haunted by the ghost of Jason Sudeikis because it’s important that everything make sense.
Though Hulu doesn’t have any original movies in November, its list of library movie titles is quite vast.

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” led all programs at this year’s virtual Critics Choice Real TV Awards, with two nods — for best competition series and best ensemble cast in an unscripted series. But the real surprise, as the awards were announced Monday via press release, was the sheer number of ties in top categories.
VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” tied with Netflix’s “The Great British Baking Show” (Netflix) for competition series, while “The Masked Singer” (Fox) and “The Voice” (NBC) tied for competition series: talent/variety, and “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” (Food Network) and “The Oprah Conversation” (Apple TV Plus) tied for structured series.
In the fan voted categories, Netflix’s “Somebody Feed Phil” host Phil Rosenthal was named male star of the year, while Sandra Lee of TLC’s “Dr. Pimple Popper” (TLC) was named female star of the year. Alex Trebek was honored posthumously with this year’s Impact Award,...

“RuPaul’s Drag Race” won two awards to top all programs in the third annual Critics Choice Real TV Awards, the Critics Choice Association and the nonfiction producers organization Npact announced on Monday.
For the third consecutive year, “RuPaul” was named the year’s best competition series, although for the first time it shared the prize with another series, “The Great British Baking Show.” The Critics Choice Association, which is made up of television, radio and internet critics and journalists, is known for a surprisingly large number of ties in its awards shows, and its 2021 winners included deadlocks in three key categories: “RuPaul” and “Gbbs” in Best Competition Series, “The Masked Singer” and “The Voice” in Best Competition Series: Talent/Variety and “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” and “The Oprah Conversation” in Best Structured Series.
“RuPaul’s” second award, for Best Ensemble Cast in an Unscripted Series, made it the only program with more than one win.

VH1’s “RuPaul’s Drag Race” led all nominees as the Critics Choice Association and nonfiction producers’ organization Npact announced on Wednesday the nominees for the third annual Critics Choice Real TV Awards. The org also announced it would posthumously honor late “Jeopardy” host Alex Trebek.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” landed five awards, including best competition series, best ensemble cast in an unscripted series, female star of the year for Michelle Visage, and both male star of the year and best show host for RuPaul Charles.
Programs next in line with three nominations included “Queer Eye” (Netflix), “Stanley Tucci: Searching For Italy” (CNN), “Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi” (Hulu), and “Top Chef” (Bravo). Netflix led all outlets with 22 nominations, while the Critics Choice for some reason decided to combine HBO and HBO Max’s tallies, even though they are technically separate outlets, and together they received 14 nods.

HBO Max is going behind the counter of some of America’s more than 45,000 Asian restaurants.
The streaming platform is ordering “Take Out,” a six-part docuseries that chronicles the cultural contributions and unique lives of the people and families behind America’s Asian food joints from award-winning journalist Lisa Ling. The CNN host will be executive producing the timely docuseries with film producer David Shadrack Smith (“Taste the Nation With Padma Lakshmi”) and Part2Pictures. Smith and Ling previously collaborated on the OWN docuseries “Our America.”
“With ‘Take Out,’ we will pay tribute to the hard work and countless contributions of Asian Americans whose restaurants helped shape the cultural tapestry and cuisines of America,” Sarah Aubrey, head of original content at HBO Max, said in a statement. “Lisa is one of a few storytellers who could paint the trials and triumphs of a community as told through the lens of a restaurant.

“Love, Victor” and “Taste the Nation With Padma Lakshmi” will be coming back for seconds.
Hulu announced at its summer TCA press tour day that both series have been picked up for season 2. The news comes less than two months after both shows debuted within a day of each other.
It also comes two days after Hulu canceled another freshman series in Zoe Kravitz rom-com “High Fidelity.” It’s particularly interesting that “High Fidelity” was given the boot and “Love, Victor” the nod, given that both shows made much-publicized moves from Disney Plus to Hulu amid a larger content shuffle between the two Disney-owned platforms.
Set in the same world as the 2018 film “Love, Simon” (which was itself inspired by Becky Albertalli’s novel “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda”) the first season of “Love, Victor” followed Victor (Michael Cimino), a new student at Creekwood High School, on his journey of self-discovery,...
