Bruce Dickinson performed a two-night stand at the iconic Whisky a Go Go in West Hollywood, California, marking his first solo non-spoken-word concerts in 22 years.
The last-minute “secret” gigs took place Friday (April 12th) and Saturday (April 13th) and served as a warmup for Dickinson’s international tour supporting his new album The Mandrake Project. A third California warmup gig is also slated for Monday night (April 15th) at The Observatory in Santa Ana.

Argentina was the only Latin American country to have a film in the Official Competition in the Cannes Film Festival in 2014, eligible for the Palme d'Or. In the press conference announcing the selection, Thierry Fremaux, General Delegate of the festival, described it as “a surreal and controversial film which looks set to divide the waters in Cannes.” It also played Toronto and Telluride. It is the official selection of Argentina for consideration for the Academy Award Competition for Best Foreign Language Film.
It is a production of Argentina’s Kramer & Sigman Films and Spain’s El Deseo (Almodóvar’s production company), co-produced by Telefe, Argentina’s federal television station. It was written and directed by Damian Szifrón and stars Ricardo Darin, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Erica Rivas, Oscar Martínez, Darío Grandinetti, Rita Cortese and Julieta Zylberberg, In Argentina, it grossed $17.2 million through November 2 thus helping to push Argentina’s 2014 local film market share toward 16%-17%, according to Lucrecia Cardoso, President of Argentina’s national film body Incaa.
It is being sold internationally by Film Factory. At its entry into the marketplace at Afm in 2013, it presold to Greece -Spentzos Film Sa, So. Korea -Doki Entertainment, Taiwan -Creative Century Entertainment Co., Ltd., Latin America -Palmera International, and for parts of Europe to Warner Bros. Entertainment Europe.
In Cannes it sold to Sony Pictures Classics for No. America; Warner Bros picked up French rights and Cinéart took Benelux rights. Since then it has also sold to Mozinet for Hungary,Prokino Filmverleih for Germany, Lucky Red for Italy and Gutek Film for Poland. As of press time, it has also sold to Metropole and Mongrel for Canada, Lev Films (Shani) for Israel, Actonfilm for Norway, Pris Audiovisuais for Portugal, Cinema Prestige for Russia and Artificial Eye for U.K.
"Wild Tales" is structured in six stories of different genres. As the first story opens, the mark of Almovodor is very strong and recognizable as the characters, passengers of an airplane, discover the most outrageous coincidences as they discuss events they were part of with one specific (and the same) individual. The absurdities of civilized conversation of this segment become increasingly degraded and the ending story takes the audience on a wildly Bunuel-escapade at what is described as a Jewish Wedding. Told with such an accelerated glee, the humor of the tales is finally accepted with joy, though getting to that point only comes after some equally grueling nightmarish stories of macho madness – but oh so wickedly funny!
Perhaps more aptly titled, Savage Tales, the people in these short stories are not like wild animals as much as they are like savages in the most primitive and barbaric ways. The thin veneer of civilization quickly cracks under the pressures of the worst aspects of modern existence today in our super capitalistic societies. The inner reserves of patience and perseverance have been depleted.
We recognize ourselves in these tales and want to hide our eyes as our own savage selves are revealed. Damian Szifron’s own statement on the film attests to this.
He says,
"These tales spring from the most unrestrained corners of the imagination. While I was working to develop other projects – often dispirited by the fact that they were impossible to realize – I began writing a series of short stories to vent my frustrations. When I put them together in one volume, I realized that they were connected by a series of themes that provided unity and coherence: They were all about catharsis, vengeance and destruction. And the undeniable pleasure of losing control.
I frequently think of Western capitalist society as a sort of transparent cage that reduces our sensitivity and distorts our bonds with others. “Wild Tales” presents a group of individuals who live within this cage without being aware of its existence. But at that point where most of us would repress – or get depressed – these people shift into gear."
I watched this with a friend (Tara Fass who blogs for Huffington Post) and am hereby stealing her very apt observation, that all theses stories are told “from within”. Not only are the settings “from within”: “Pasternak” is in an airplane, “The Rats” within a kitchen which is within a restaurant, “Road to Hell” within a car, “Bombita” is an exception, although it ends within a prison, “The Deal” I have already forgotten, and “Til Death Do Us Part” takes place within a wedding hall except when the bride escapes to the roof. On a parallel track, they take place from within the psyche and burst forth explosively into the reality of existence. Sometimes horrifying and sometimes hilarious and always the dark human element gaining the upper hand, this is a movie about people experiencing a reality as it shifts and becomes unpredictable causing them to cross the thin line dividing civilization and barbarism. Everyday encounters drive these characters to madness as they cede to the undeniable pleasure of losing control.
Will it get the Academy Award? No, and I predict it will not be nominated either because it does not fit the “Academy” tastes for serious drama, and the format is less appealing than a full blown feature film that satisfies the arc of characters and plot. But it is an unforgettable experience which I hope many people will pay to see. It reminds me of “Divorce Italiian Style”. This is a wild ride, an excruciatingly delectable trip.

When Tim Bergling a.k.a. Avicii opened the second half of his set at the main stage of Ultra Music Festival in March this year he took a gamble. The crowd of over 300,000 hyped-up ravers who gathered in Miami expected to hear more Edm goodness in style of his trademark mainstream club-smashers ‘Levels’, ‘Silhouettes’ and ‘I Could Be The One’. But the Swedish DJ-producer did not deliver his ‘signature dishes’ – the progressive synths, trackstops and pitch bends. Instead he came out onto the stage accompanied by a live stomping band and dropped a new track in the form of country-themed anthem ‘Wake Me Up’, along with many other experimental sounds. The ravers weren’t sure what to make of it. They could not have predicted this material to be his entire upcoming debut album entitled ‘True’. Their confusion about the sizeable shift in sound turned into a widespread online criticism.

Earlier today (Aug 19th) one of my all-time favourite directors, Albert Pyun, announced via his Facebook and Twitter pages that he would be stepping away from movie-making and all that it ensues, due to health reasons… He’s since expanded on the problems with his health in a further post on his Facebook page, that I urge everyone whose ever enjoyed an Albert Pyun movie to read.
Hi Everyone – sadly I’m going to have to shutdown my facebook and other movie related efforts including Director’s cuts attending film festivals and screenings due to my health issue. I have to take the time to address this condition as its a long term but not life threatening. I’ve had some heart issues but through Cynthia, that was being stabilized and in control. But this new one is not as dangerous but far more widespread across my entire body and...

Several years in the making (a rough cut premiered at Austin's Alamo Drafthouse back in 2008), Road To Hell sees a jaded Cody (Michael Pare) making his way through a surreal, purgatorial landscape where he meets two foul-mouthed female spree-killers (Clare Kramer and Courtney Peldon) who derail his attempts to find redemption after years of fighting an unnamed war. Featuring the music of original Streets composer Jim Steinmann alongside new songs by Anthony Riparetti and performed by The Roxy Gunn Project, with longtime fave Deborah Van Valkenburgh reprising her role as Cody's sassy sister, The Road To Hell offers a dark flipside to the classic rock n roll fable.

Thinking about attending the Triple Threat Film Fest in Chicago this March, which is showing Albert Pyun's Road to Hell along with director's cuts of his earlier films Nemesis and Cyborg? Then check out this promo he cut together for the event!
It's lengthy but covers all three films and reminds us why the older ones are still cult favorites to this day. Along with the video, Pyun sent over a new "Triple Threat" banner ad by graphic artist Jerry Scullion, who also did the Cyborg case art.
The "Triple Threat" event is taking place at the Patio Theatre (click here for tickets). There's also a "Triple Threat" Facebook event page so be sure to RSVP there if you plan to attend.

I can’t tell whether the digital entrepreneur is spending a lot of money to goof on everybody, or whether he seriously believes he can generate a profit in strange enterprises that reflect his idiosyncratic sensibilities. In any case, Alki David is at it again today: He’s introducing a lineup of TV shows on Kilm (Channel 64, formerly Khiz) — where he has the operating rights, and which he’s calling FilmOn.TV La. Personalities will include himself, Kato Kaelin, comedian Andy Dick, and model Janice Dickinson. ”This is true interactive television where the audience is able to vote and interact by webcam and/or mobile phone,” David says. It’s being carried locally by cable providers including Time Warner Cable, as well as by DirecTV and Dish Network. By the end of 2013 FilmOn.tv La will be available “in a good percentage of the cable Universe and (over-the-air) in the USA,...

Band reveals track list and announces Florida tour in support of sophomore album.

Having already sufficiently fired up fans with a (thoroughly badass) teaser clip for their upcoming Reign of Terror album, Sleigh Bells are now revealing details about the disc — albeit in a slightly less radical way.
According to a press release issued by the band's publicist, Terror will hit stores February 14 (it's sure to be a bloody valentine) and features 11 tracks, with appropriately Sleigh Bells-y titles like "True Shred Guitar," "Demons" and "Road to Hell." It was produced by guitarist Derek E. Miller, and, as the press release puts it, features "songs that are as crushing and authoritative as their title suggests; they're effortlessly robust and heavier than any of the band's previous output ... the sonic equivalent of a beautiful shotgun to the head."

As we told you at the end of October, director Albert Pyun finished filming the final scenes of his Road to Hell at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, including two music performances with The Roxy Gunn Project, and now he's sent over a raw production track of Roxy's performance of "Nowhere Fast".
There's no sound design or sound clean-up and proper 5.1 mix, but this clip edited by Daniel Gutierrez gives a good idea of what the ending climax to Road to Hell, which features Cody (Michael Pare) meeting his long lost daughter for the first time at her concert, is going to look like.
Road to Hell (review of the unfinished version here) was written by Cynthia Curnan and is the unofficial sequel to the 1984 rock & roll fable Streets of Fire. Albert explains, "When you see the reunion scene preceding this...wow, the power of that really kicks this song up a notch.

This past weekend, October 29th and 30th, Albert Pyun finished filming the final scenes of his Road to Hell at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, including two music performances with The Roxy Gunn Project, and he's sent over several photos from the shoot for us to share. He's also in the final stages of putting together a new promo trailer, which we should have for you shortly.
Road to Hell (review of the unfinished version here) was written by Cynthia Curnan and is the unofficial sequel to the 1984 rock & roll fable Streets of Fire. Here's what Albert told us just prior to beginning filming these last couple of scenes:
"The primary missing piece to complete Road to Hell is the ending climax, which features Cody (Michael Pare) meeting his long lost daughter for the first time at her concert. His love child with Ellen. Road to Hell ends with...

When we first reviewed Albert Pyun's Road to Hell back in 2008 (read that review here), it was unfinished, and Pyun had told us that he might have to scrap several of the composited effects and rework a few things. Well, this weekend on October 30th he plans to finish shooting the last parts of it at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, including two music performances with The Roxy Gunn Project. In the meantime he sent over a brand new trailer edited by Daniel Ray Gutierrez.
Road to Hell is the unofficial sequel to the 1984 rock & roll fable Streets of Fire, and here's what Albert has planned for the film, which he'll be presenting at this year's Afm:
"The primary missing piece to complete Road to Hell is the ending climax, which features Cody (Michael Pare) meeting his long lost daughter for the first time at her concert. His love child with Ellen.

Albert Pyun's got a new vision on the way. It's called Road to Hell and it's hard-boiled in almost every way. Visually, he's going for something bright, bold and drastically stylized and you can see that he's inspired by Sin City. You have to give the independent producer/director credit for producing his singular visions, but based on what I'm seeing in terms of performance, and the fact that it looks like the whole movie takes place in a car, I'm wondering if Road to Hell will be received somewhat negatively like his last green-screen heavy Tales of An Ancient Empire.

Captain America (1990)
Directed by Albert Pyun
Written by Stephen Tolkin, based on a story by Stephen Tolkin and Lawrence Block, based on characters created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby
USA, 1990

Dismissed by comic-book fans (those who know of it at all) as the Captain America with the Italian Red Skull, this was a film that I had publicly mused about going to see when I took a look at the Fantasia line-up.
To my surprise, I got the following comment on July 13th from Albert Pyun, director of Captain America, not to mention The Sword and the Sorcerer and Cyborg, “Hey Michael – hope to see you at my screening of Captain America and Tales of an Ancient Empire. Think you will enjoy both. They are sort of throwbacks to the 1980′s cinema and I think a lot of fun and laughs… And I really want to read...

United States of Tara ran in place a bit this week, not moving many storylines ahead until the final four words of "The Road to Hell Is Paved with Breast Intentions."
You will not win.
These were the same four words typed out incessantly on Tara's computer to kick off season three, of course, although no information was revealed about them here.
I still assume it's a new alter trying to break free, and I also assume it will go back to step-brother Bryce. But let's hope Hatteras brings up the phrase immediately next week and we aren't left hanging for too much longer.
Not much excitement elsewhere on this episode. I'm glad Kate has found a direction, but can't say I care about her getting rebuffed by that passenger. I doubt we've seen the last of him, though, and perhaps he'll lead somewhere interesting.
Meanwhile, Neil got me. I...

Even back in the day Marvel was tryinig to get some of its titles out in movie form but wasn't successful. There's been a Punsher that starred Dolph Lundgren and even a Fantastic 4 movie that was so cheesy it got shelved and has never seen the light of day and we also had a Captain America movie that will finally be getting a Director's Cut on blu-ray in May.
Director Albert Pyun says that the film once had a huge budget and the n the backers backed out and the film had to be finished on a shoe string budget. Pynn is going to ride the coat tails "so-to-speak" with the big screen release of Captain America and his recent Director's Cut release of Cyborg.
Here's what Pynn is describing his cut as;
It will be based on "my own 35 mm CA work picture and temp mix [that] I did before I left [the] picture.

Dave takes a look back at one of cinema's most controversial releases of the past few decades: it's Cannibal Holocaust...
There are some sick films out there, we're told. Some films so vile that it's necessary for whole sections to be excised before they can be viewed by the public. In the most extreme cases, it's much easier to just ensure that such a film will just never be viewed in the UK, ever (unless you import it).
The BBFC were tasked with deciding what was acceptable or not following the Video Recordings Act of 1984. You've probably read about this elsewhere, or you can check out my rambling article about The Exorcist for more details. Suffice to say that the BBFC were seen, at the time, as the overseers of morality with their legally enforced ability to correct corruption with the swift slice of the scissors.
However, if a local council felt strongly enough,...

In the midst of all the Fantastic Fest '08 insanity, a very rare and exciting event quietly slipped in and packed the Alamo Ritz with adoring fans.
