One can't help but ask what was going through the mind of the producers with this one? Viewers had just been exposed to two emotionally-charged episodes, one implying that Jim's memory was gone forever, and the second in which it returns.
And then what happens? Poor ole Jim is once again shunted off to the side, while Mel and the always comatose Eli go off once again to solve the haunting of a ditz, all apparently to supply an "acting" vehicle for Hilary Duff.
I always wondered how much pressure JLH exerted to get her then boyfriend major exposure on the series. It was similar to Payne's participation, but he at least added something in the line of humor--and occasional pathos--to his role. Eli just took up space. Meanwhile, Jim seems to have been nothing more than a pretty face to attract female fans.
