Once a rat, always a rat.

It appears that Merrick hasn't really changed, determined to move on from his status and as scheming as ever, even with that scar on the right side of his face that has made him look totally hideous and exposed the ugliness in his soul. Attempts for him to be redeemed have not come to fruition, and now he set his sights on the vulnerable Susan as a way of working himself into the wealthy Layton family. It's obviously not a relationship of love because Susan hasn't recovered from her mental illness, and Sharon is shocked to find out that this is going on. She's dealing with her parents, a troubled father and a nasty, scheming mother, filled with judgments that have never left her, and definitely not personality traits that the sweet Sharon has taken on. The opening scenes focus on a recovering Bobbie, giving the wonderful Peggy Ashcroft some juicy material to sink her teeth into. The complex stories of these very troubled characters continue to intertwine, but it's not as good of an episode as a several that have passed by. Still, an episode of this is 10 times as better than most things you'd see on TV, and while there are definitely frustrating moments of little to nothing happening, you know that each little detail is important to how all the drama coming up unfolds. Definitely interesting from a historical aspect of what was happening in India at the time, with Sharon indicating that she'd be just as unhappy in England as she is in India.
