Elvis Mitchell: Under the Influence (Bill Murray) (2008)

In this second episode Bill Murray sits down with critic Elvis Mitchell and dives into various subjects ranging from the Marx Brothers to Hoosiers, which is a film that can make the comedian cry and laugh. I was really surprised to see how well informed and intelligent Murray was when it comes to some of the older films he talked about. One of his biggest influences was The Moon's Our Home with Margaret Sullavan and Henry Fonda. Murray talks at a great length about this movie but really settles in on Sullavan who he clearly loves. Cary Grant also gets a lot of discussion time with North by Northwest being centered on. When it comes time to talk about his own career he tells a great story about the making of Tootsie and how Pollack didn't want him but Hoffman did. I had never heard this story before and it was funning hearing how Hoffman and Pollack were constantly fighting about everything and Murray gets a good joke in that they even fought about what time the sun rose. Murray shocked me even more when he mentioned D.W. Griffith's A Romance in Happy Valley, which he says he saw when a print of it finally turned up in the 1970s and he thought to himself that if they could make great movies like this one so many years ago then it shouldn't be that hard to try and make that same magic today.
