Elvis Mitchell: Under the Influence (Laurence Fishburne) (2008)

Laurence Fishburne is the third guest in the series with critic Elvis Mitchell. Fishburne, like the Murray segment, really shocked me with his great knowledge of the cinema, which includes talk about Laurel and Hardy, Peter Lorre, Claude Rains, Bogart and even some early race cinema. The most interesting conversation was about "swing" and who could bring it to a movie and dance with it. His impression of Peter Lorre from The Matlese Falcon was great to watch. Clark Gable also gets a lot of talk as Fishburne says he was his biggest influence when he was younger. Dennis Hopper is another influence on Fishburn and he tells several stories from the making of Apocalypse Now. The freedom he says Hopper brought to the film is something that stuck with him and something he tried to capture throughout his career. The movie talk ranges quite a bit from more dramatic films like Sweet Smell of Success to comedies like The Honeymooners. The discussion on Sidney Poitier was also very interesting as the black influence is something that gave Fishburne his dreams of becoming an actor.
