Quotes

  • Anne Boleyn : You dare say this child was sired by another man. You're not fit to be father to my son!

Henry VIII : Madam, remember to whom you speak. I have the power to humble you, much and more than I have raised you. Remember that before you speak again.

  • Thomas Cromwell : She is well-hated, your majesty.

[the king is sitting down and reading a bible]

Henry VIII : I'll believe it.

Thomas Cromwell : You have seen it. The women on your progress north with the queen about a year ago, they spat at her, your majesty. Do you remember that?

    Henry VIII : I remember.

Thomas Cromwell : And your grace loves mistress Seymour.

Henry VIII : Now, Cromwell, I love no one! Least of all mares. Mine threw me this afternoon. I've done riding for a time.

[rubbing leg as it starts hurting]

Thomas Cromwell : I have talked to master Cranmer as your majesty would have me.

Henry VIII : I would have you?

Thomas Cromwell : Very wisely, very wisely.

Henry VIII : Oh? What said Cranmer?

Thomas Cromwell : He was of my opinion, your majesty, that your grace knows where your duty lies, and we know where ours is.

    [the king starts getting impatient]

    Henry VIII : The truth!

Thomas Cromwell : Your grace is blamed by many for the death of the princess dowager Catherine and for the fate of men like Moore and Fisher. You are blamed for the indiscretions of your queen.

Henry VIII : Now, Cromwell, tread softly.

Thomas Cromwell : I tread as my duty directs me, your majesty. I tread for your interests. It is thought by many that the queen has bewitched you. Barren or with a daughter, she is nothing for you. She can be seen to be guilty of so much that you are blamed for. Master Cranmer and I both think your grace did well.

    Henry VIII : Did well?

Thomas Cromwell : We have found means to release you from her.

    Henry VIII : What... cause?

    [starts rubbing leg again]

Thomas Cromwell : No cause, your majesty, but means.

[attempts to move the king's leg to make it more comfortable but the king hits him with the bible]

    Henry VIII : What!

Thomas Cromwell : England needs your heir, or we'll have the bloody wars of York and Lancaster again.

Henry VIII : You think of your own neck, eh?

Thomas Cromwell : We think of our duty to your grace.

    [the king starts laughing]

Henry VIII : Thomas, I'm not a fool. You better ask Cranmer to start to pray for you, or to pray that the queen has no son, for if she does, by god I'll take you, be assured! You have ways, you say, to remove her. You've gathered causes, I've no doubt.

[holds the bible up, pointing it in Cromwell's face]

Henry VIII : But should she mother an heir, she must be above suspicion, and you will be silenced!

[hits Cromwell on the head with the bible]
