Divorce looming?
lor_21 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
In 1798, Napoleon conducted a campaign in Egypt, and beyond his victories he got Christopher Neame, the soldier who made love to Josephine's maid, to confirm that his wife Josephine was indeed cheating on him, not only with Tony Anholt, a captain in his army but alos continuing to have sex with T. P. McKenna's corrupt politician.

Meanwhile, Billie Whitelaw as Josephine plans to divorce Napoleon, but McKenna insists that she not pursue that tactic, as it will doom her future. Upon finding evidence of his wife's infidelity, Napoleon is the one who seeks a divorce, and his powerful backers are close to executing a coup d'etat on his behalf, with the amazing twist of confronting McKenna with a letter he must sign, his resignation, as he stands in the way of Napoleon assuming full control of France.

This episode is nominally titled "Pauline" after the wife of a soldier is easily seduced by Napoleon (played by Cheryl Kennedy, a blonde British tv talent),, as Ian Holm tells her of love at first sight but we know he is on the rebound from the treachery of his wife Josephine. In a minor role Tim Curry with an impressive hairdo (or wig, like the rest of the cast), appears as Josephine's son (hence Napoleon's stepson) caught up in all this "who's doing who" court intrigue. Curry made his motion picture debut in "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", shot the same year as his first significant tv role in "Napoleon in Love".

We see a quite different aspect of Napoleon's character played by Holm here, angry, still ambitious, and definitely oversexed, as is the rest of the cast. There's a lot of plot provided in this episode, with the "love" (= sex) still delivered to British tv fans, and plenty of dramatics and plot twists.
