Bob Dylan: Rolling Thunder & Gospel Years (2006)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Huge four hour documentary that takes a look at the most creative part of Dylan's career from the start of the Rolling Thunder Revue up to his final gospel album. This was made by a fan (and Dylan tribute band member) who also did a previous documentary covering the 1966-74 years but that there didn't work at all. This one here works a lot better because more people are interviewed who were around when this stuff was taking place. Rubin "Hurricane" Carter, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Scarlet Rivera and many, many others are here telling stories about the original tours, why Dylan went towards Christian music and not to mention the disastrous RENALDO AND CLARA. Carter gets the first 90 minutes to tell his story and how Dylan got involved with him. If you're a die hard fan you'll certain like hearing these stories as well as meeting some of the people behind the music. I'm glad they included the audio from the 1979 Tempe, AZ show where the opening act got attacked and then Dylan came out to "preach" to them. The infamous preaching is here and it's always a kick to hear it.
