The past is just that. It's past. Gone. Behind you. What's done is done. But what if there were a way to somehow go back to a time in your life where you messed up or somebody treated you horribly, and changed it to fit your specifications, resulting in the complete opposite treatment. Let's see what would happen if such a device were to fall into the wrong hands (George Jetson's). So one afternoon George's car broke down and he has to signal a bus, insulted by the surly driver for not having tokens, and he has to sit in front of a little bastard who hits him with his teddy bear for no reason. Beside George is a self-proclaimed aspiring inventor and he shows George his latest creation: Replayola, the cure for having bad days. What it is can best be described as a life editing machine. Change bad moments in life by manipulating the things and people around you simply by reshaping them with your mind. How much would you pay? A hundred bucks! He allows George to demonstrate Replayola and as a result, the surly driver was now very friendly and the little bastard wanted to call George "Daddy". Determined to reshape his humdrum life, George offers to buy Replayola and the inventor foolishly excepts. Look out world, time, and space, you now belong to George Jetson! After fixing it so his family would give him the royal treatment and tells them all about Replayola, George is then set to give a public speech, at which he is lousy. After fumbling through his speech, George sits down and has to listen to Bunky Binxton, one of Jane's three ex-steady boyfriends, give a far better speech. George whips out Replayola and pulls the old switcheroo, making himself a pristine speaker. But he didn't stop there. He committed a felony or two, by way of changing his bank balance and playing the stock market. But hey, it's the time the little guy got ahead, right? Who cares if he has to cheat? The big guys do it all the time. So through some poorly placed bets and a little Replayola in the mix, the Jetsons become millionaires.
Next, George was due to speak again. This time in front of 5,000 people. But first the family gets in a fight with a snobby politician and his wife, so George tries to put a stop to it, only to find Replayola was missing. Where did it go? Turns out the imbecile dropped it, and Bunky Binxton was nice enough to return it. So after re-editing this scene and giving a speech, George may very well be facing a candidacy for president, and their stock climbed to where they were billionaires. But with all this good fortune, George still couldn't get over Bunky and how he'd once kissed Jane. Deciding to silence his inner demons, George rewinds back to that particular date on which the kiss took place and erased it, only realizing too late that he had actually erased his own wedding day! D'oh! Well in this universe, George lives alone with Rosie (and why does he have Rosie? Jane is the one who got her.), Elroy and Judy don't exist, Astro is somewhere else and still called Tralfaz, and Jane is married to Bunky, who laugh in his face and kick him out when he attempts to regain his beloved. Angered, George wanted to sue the man on the bus, even though it was his own dumb-ass fault he'd erased his wedding day. So, he rewinds back to the beginning of the episode and gives Replayola back, thus giving up his riches and fame. Some things are just more important. So George was back to being treated like crap, but he wouldn't have it any other way.
This episode is one of my personal favorites. It's a great premise with a great plot. I think we could all use a Replayola of our own to fix our own screw-ups. But as we've seen, when put in the wrong hands, any invention will backfire with disastrous results. My favorite part has to be when the Jetsons are fighting with that snobby politician. I just like how each family member speaks up for the other. One line in particular caught me as funny: the politician's wife said of Elroy "that son belongs in a kennel along with that dog." Judy replies, "that's my brother you're calling a dog." The 'dog' remark was actually aimed at Astro, however for some reason they still said Elroy should be in a kennel, so in a sense they were calling him a dog...somehow. Great to see they're such a tight-knit family. As for Bunky Binxton, he's been recycled twice throughout the series as Jane's other steadies: Flash Flotsam in "The Cosmic Courtship of George and Jane" and Blinky Sunspot in "The Vacation". Same voice, same attitude. Now, since George is the one who married Jane, why is he still so jealous of Bunky? I think he envies the man's success, but hell for all we know he could have been working for Cogswell Cogs the whole time. Great episode! Check it out, and then replay it!
