My own personal Oktoberfest continues, only instead of beer and delicious food, I’m diving headfirst into horror, which sounds kind of unpleasant, come to think of it. Fortunately it’s movies instead of, you know, real-life terror. Anyway, today I continue writing lists about spooky things because Halloween creeps ever closer, and if you need something to get you in the mood, just check out these super creepy, short horror films you can watch for free. I had so many I split this into two parts, with part 1 featuring live action shorts and part 2 showcasing animated ones. Check back next week for that one! And now, in no particular order… 7. Embedded above is the trailer for Esoterica, the new film directed by Australian director Sam Barrett. The film is a B&W neo noir that begins like so many classic noirs start, with a man hired to investigate a cheating husband. But that investigation soon leads into surreal descent into a terrifying criminal underworld.
Esoterica is the second film by Barrett. The first was the hyper-violent and bloody No Through Road, which is currently available on DVD on Amazon and Netflix. Actually, while watching the above trailer, I started thinking this was a pretty sedate offering from the director’s previous gruesome effort. But, then, the chainsaws start revving up and there are children being held captive in cages, so it looks like Barrett is heading back into dark territory.
However, I do like seeing that Barrett seems to be stretching himself stylistically. I do like the B&W and...

The bloody Australian revenge thriller No Through Road is now driving into Stateside view; Cinema Epoch has announced it will release the movie on DVD September 15. The production of No Through Road kept its director Sam Barrett a tad busy—as he also wrote the script with Robbie Studsor, served as producer with David Karsten and has a key acting role as well.
The violent action is set off when a trio of aggrieved thugs turn up on the doorstep of photographer Richard (James Helm), wanting to talk to the distressed female stranger who has taken refuge in his house. Deception and half-truths rule No Through Road until weapons (mainly of the backyard variety) are unleashed and a full-scale home invasion begins. The mayhem, which is confined to the formerly tidy suburban dwelling, features the work of special FX/makeup artist Freena Hamilton, who truly lets the blood run free,...
