Some of the various "extras" on the "Ultimate Edition" James Bond . . .

. . . DVD sets are worth your time, but EXPLOSION TESTS from the 2006 DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER offerings is not among them. These "special effects" mar the original film because they look really cheap and "cheesy" on a television (which generally means that they must have looked A LOT worse on the big screen, back in the day). As second-generation Bond producer Michael Wilson points out, these "effects" were accomplished by composite image layering. Well, I've seen some fairly old shorts, such as DREAMS OF A RAREBIT FIEND (1906) which come off as far more realistic than the "explosions" in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. True, RAREBIT FIEND was shot in black and white. However, if the best you can put on the screen for a premium action movie (as contrasted with an August-release teen comedy) is what DIAMONDS manages, I say, shoot it in black and white!
