This episode is the definition of suspense
tanstorck8 April 2022
This episode was one of the most suspenseful things I have seen in a while. There was hardly a second where I could catch my breath. There was so much revealed while so many more layers were added to be explored in the second season. The only problem is that we'll have to wait a while to get a resolution to the many cliffhangers. The music really helped intensify this episode that was perfectly directed.

So intense

Literally on the edge of my couch the entire episode. Amazing editing, pacing, writing, acting - everything that made this show so great all season. Going into the show and the first few episodes I never expected what we eventually got. One of the best shows I've seen in 2022.

Are you kidding?!

How can we wait a year after such an episode??

I could barely wait a week for this one.

Kept me on the edge of my seat the entire ride. Such a thrill. I need more.

Mindblowing.

Magnum opus! 👍
bosporan8 April 2022
Absolutely stupendous! My gargantuan expectations going into this season finale were eclipsed by this ground breaking masterpiece!

Events from the previous instalment confronted the 'innies' with their 'outie' reality and that continues, complete with shocking and transformative implications. Unique television, though it has a whiff of the machine sentience-awakening in West World.

An excellent finale in its own right answering questions and giving closure, yet at the same time swamping the senses with an array of questions, perfectly setting up season 2. I for one cannot wait!

Severance (Season 1)
tmcmaster-675128 April 2022
This is the best new show of 2022. This is the first time maybe since Breaking Bad where I cannot stand to wait to see the next episode. 10/10 season. The cast are all phenomenal, especially John Tuturro. Surprisingly Ben Stillers direction is first rate, but this story is hands down incredible and has me 100% invested. I haven't looked forward to a second season of a show so much in a long time. I'm ready for season 2 now!

Mind meltingly brilliant
doorsscorpywag8 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This show is the most infuriatingly brilliant show I have ever seen.

Numbers and melons and weird guy nursing goats, innies and outies, Mrs Selwig, Harmony and Mr Milchick. Gay Christopher Walken and a hatful of other weird folk.

What the hell are they doing?

There have been 8 episodes already that drove me mental hoping for a clue. 5 numbers then what happens to them. This final episode was so completely bonkers and I was screaming at the screen for Dylan to hold on as Hellie, Mark and Irv discovered pretty disturbing revelations as to who they were.

The last five minutes was some of the most suspenseful TV ever.

Now we have to wait for 2 aaaaaaaaghhhh!

As good as it gets ...

Can't really say much without massive spoilers but so much about a mystery's quality revolves around how it develops it's threads and either cultivates further mystery or begins to resolve them, so you never really know how good a show based around suspense and mystery can be until you start to see some of these payoffs. Well, Severance is the real deal. They took a simple premise and developed it into the most interesting show on TV. This episode felt more like 15 min than 50, and I cannot wait for S2.

Incredible season finale to an outstanding show
gareth-754429 April 2022
Severance is outstanding, the writing, the directing and the acting by a cast of brilliant actors depicting some odd and interesting characters within a story full of mystery and intrigue.

9 episodes of expertly crafted storytelling with the final episode leaving the audience gripped to their seats, incredible.

Season 2 will probably be ranked as the most anticipated show in TV history.

The last 5 minutes omg this is amazing TV. Apple TV is killing it with WeCrashed and Severance. Amazing and great shows. The build up to this episode was what made the ending so great.

artificially slow
ellahull5 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not usually a fan of implausible dystopian shows, but stuck with it because of the buzz, and it took 4 or 5 episodes to get invested in the characters, but then I binged to the end.

So, it did build up to be compelling TV, but there are still many frustrating implausibilities:

  • With all the tech and the careful surveillance, it was much too easy to hatch and execute the plan. (They can't smuggle a letter out, and yet they can get away with hiding books and maps and wander about freely, and smuggle in key cards??)

  • In the last show, the innies acted like there was no urgency. Why? They knew they had a short time to get the critical message out.

  • Helly's outie's impending speech was too coincidental.

  • No way Dylan can hold that pose for that amount of time. Why didn't he plan this part better, and use something to secure those switches in place?

Also, the pacing was often agonizingly slow, and no more than in the last episode, which really seemed like a cheap way to add suspense. I depended heavily on fast-forward to speed up the long walks in white hallways, the camera endlessly following cars back out and drive for blocks, or other artificially pondering scenes.

Love this show, but this episode was tough to watch

Warning: Spoilers
Listen, I like this show. The writing has been superb, for the most part. I can also accept that not every sequence of events has to be logical for it to be entertaining.

But I had a hard time accepting that each and every innie--that were DESPERATE to escape a terrible situation--acted with 0 urgency once they unsevered. Instead of writing themself a note, figuring out ways to alert themselves, etc., they all spent 30+ minutes doing nothing, just so the audience would remain on edge. Maybe Irving's actions were on-character, but Helly's and Mark's were not.

This finale was just superfluous suspense.

adamgs-179938 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I won't spoil anything but I haven't seen tv this good since breaking bad went off the air. I have to say this show might be better than it. This finale was a masterpiece and I can't believe I have to wait so long for the next. I've given out a 10 star rating maybe 5 times total on IMDb and I would give an 11 if I could.

All I can say is this episode satisfies fully after an entire season leading up to this moment. Wonderful storytelling! Just when you think writers and filmmakers have thought of everything along comes a series like this. Highly recommend. Looking forward to season two.

Warning: Spoilers
Mind blowing episode, the way the "innies" discovered the out world just says so much about how people will always want freedom above everything.

After watching the season finale, I believe its just the beginning. And i have a theory, I guess we can all agree that Helly's dad is weird and somewhat robotic, and he did mention something about revolving. And we also know that the "innies" work is that they see numbers and organize them in a strange way no one understands. So, my theory is the severance real goal is to transfer the mind of the high class people in society who are aging/dying to new people who they see if they fit or not by the program they're testing with numbers? I may be wrong but what i know for a fact is that this is an amazing show and the irony is its made by Apple!

Suspense Suspense and Uhhhhhhh Suspense
mpcoe2011-471-1983778 April 2022
Man, I haven't been in that much suspense watching a movie since the scene in Silence of the Lambs where Buffalo Bill turned the lights off in the basement and slipped on his night vision glasses.

The forty minute runtime felt like ten. This series just keeps wowing me with its originality. Full of fresh ideas and storytelling .

A+++

Incredible
WordsworthStone8 April 2022
I wasn't sure coming into this show, Ben Stiller has had a hit-or-miss history with me. I've always felt a disconnect with some of his introspective works. But then, there's the social reflections of Reality Bites to the witty satire of Zoolander and I love him again.

This show and this finale is like a culmination of all his past works. I could say this could be his magnum opus. It has everything, original concept, great execution, witty dialogue and INCREDIBLE incredible pacing. He outdid all his previous works, including Escape at Dannemora.

I don't want to spoil it so I'm just going to keep this general. This show is what television always wanted to be, an edge of your seat wait, episode to episode, potentially season to season. Once the burn of setup settles, you just want to know what reveals next.

Everyone working on this show, BRAVO! Apple TV is definitely investing in quality series shows, I have yet to see a hard miss. If it wasn't so new, I'd be comparing the content with HBO.

Nothing short of a masterpiece.

Warning: Spoilers
This show is simply incredible. The actors are simply incredible. The framing, cinematography, lighting, music ect... are all incredible. Britt's and adam's physical acting was sublime in this episode, ever one of their scenes they was able to convey the confusion tension and vitriol of their situations. I really cannot gush about this show enough. Ben stiller has created a master piece on par with west world season 1 or mr robot. Whilst I wanted to know more the final scene was a amazing cliffhanger that's gonna have me thinking about this show for the next 335 days till we get season 2.

This episode was amazing. Rarely does any episode of TV pay off like this. This is up there with Walt killing Gus Fring. Was so satisfying to see the innies slowly uncover their lives and put the pieces together. You can tell the actors, director and writers put a lot of thought into exactly how these innies would be feeling in this new situation. Kudos to the actors for getting it across so perfectly. Perfectly directed, perfectly edited, perfectly paced.

Edge Of My Seat

Warning: Spoilers
I've never reviewed anything on here before but I had to create an account just to say how god damn amazing this episode is. The race against time that spans between the other characters and Dylan is so well done. The score is amazing. Literal goosebumps the entire time. I'm not sure how I'm gonna survive the wait for season 2. Kinda wish severance was a thing just so I could skip to the next season.

Great show, good episode. Show: 8/10, episode: 7/10
RecordScratchReview22 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I like what I have seen so far, intriguing premise, good flow and build up. My huge gripe with this episode is that they knew they had a certain amount of time to get their message out. They may never have the chance again. They were even told something like, "when you wake up, move fast and tell someone everything that happens here." So they knew the plan. Instead we had people learning their dog's name, looking at pictures, reading an entire chapter of a book at a book group, waiting for baby's to be fed, sitting out in front of someone's house just watching... no urgency, seemed weird and unrealistic.

It didn't match the build up.

Then you had Cobel, "you seemed tense." ITS THE INNIE! Really...? You discovered someone's inner thought process and memories shifted to a different person because the hug... got tense...?

Still love the show and am excited for season 2, just complaining because it annoyed me to watch them lallygag for 30 minutes, knowing it was life or death.

Lazy writing
franzv-lucke12 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Very disappointing conclusion for as great season. In the last episode the innies make it very clear that they only have a very short time once they are awakened outside to tell their story. Then why on earth do they all waste so much time when it finally happens?! They could write themselves a note immediately, they could call the police, a journalist, Mark could talk to his sister once he realizes who she is.

I get that the writers wanted to create suspense but it's just so frustrating that they do it by dumbing down the characters and letting them forget everything they planned in the episode before. I also understand that it is interesting for the viewer to see them exploring their outside life and that the writers probably wanted to make sure that there would be enough suspense left for a second season. But they could have easily achieved that by for example letting the innies wake up by accident for a short period (some computer glitch for instance) of time.

Well, the writers obviously went for the lazy writing path, sadly not many viewers seem to care or notice (at least according to the high ratings of this episode).

How to build suspense 101
johnoconnor-267408 April 2022
I found myself pausing this episode so many times in bouts of pure frustration, yet the frustration was quickly overshadowed by the intense anticipation of what the next minute might hold. This is what true suspense is. A perfect balance between anticipation and frustration.

Ben Stiller, you have absolutely nailed it, again! Every episode you direct/produce is in a class of its own.

Exceptional...
slak96u8 April 2022
What more can you say really, everything about this series is incredibly well done. Easily the best program of 2022, and it's not really close. Kudos to the Producers, Apple, and Stiller, if Severance doesn't get nominated for a dozen Emmys it would be a crime. I am dying with anticipation for S2. Just wow...
