Even with a generous helping of "they're trying their best in difficult circumstances", the fact remains the same - this was dire.
From unfunny comediennes to Stephen Mulhern trying woefully to remind us all he's a magician, the endless advert breaks actually provided us with a chance to flick over to another channel and see something decent.
Jason Manford (the host) and Gary Barlow having a "who can be more smug?" contest was mildly amusing, but the only real star of the night was the BGT winner.
Very poor.
