Seamus Patrick McDonagh became the New York Golden Gloves Heavyweight Champion, the oldest amateur boxing tournament in the world, winning all of his fights by knockout. The finals were held in the main arena at Madison Square Garden. In attendance that night was Muhammad Ali who presented Seamus with a miniature set of golden gloves that are awarded to the winners. Seamus fought professionally as a cruiser-weight and was ranked as high as #3 in the world. He did not get a shot at the cruiser-weight title but was asked to fight Evander Holyfield for the U.S. Heavyweight Title in Atlantic City on June 1st 1990, replacing Mike Tyson who just lost his title to Buster Douglas. Seamus greatest triumph was a victory was over Cecil Coffey (19-2-1 17KO's), in a 10 round bout in Atlantic City in 1989. He was the underdog and was trailing on points when in the 6th round he caught his Coffey with his famous left hook and subsequently knocked him out. As this fight was in the heavyweight class it secured Seamus a #9 world ranking in that category. Seamus had one more fight after that and retired at 28 with a record of 19-3-1 14KO's. He now resides in San Francisco, California where he has been acting and running a marketing business.
