Mommie Dearest or Not
E! Mysteries & Scandals: Joan Crawford (1998)
Karen Swenson (author), Vincent Sherman, Bob Thomas (biographer), Christina Crawford (daughter) and Jeri Smith (personal secretary) are among the people interviewed as this episode takes a look at the two sides of Joan Crawford.
In the history of Hollywood one must consider Crawford to be one of the biggest stars. She's certainly a legend due to the countless years she spent on the screen but controversy soon followed and after her daughter's claims of abuse, she fell into a camp figure with MOMMIE DEAREST. This episode does a pretty good job at talking down at Crawford over every bad rumor. This includes discussion of early rumors of prostitution and then we get into her marriages, her various affairs and of course the issues of child abuse. Going by this episode there really wasn't too much nice about Crawford but that's what you got to expect because of the type of show this here was trying to be. Overall it was a very entertaining episode, although I'm not so sure where I fall on the entire Mommie Dearest decade.
