Although newspapers from Terry Wogan's home country often gave him a hard time, one of them saw his plusses during this week's run.
Dublin's Sunday Independent (29th July 1990) featured columnist Colm Toibin, who wrote of this episode that: "This is the middle of the summer and loads of people are on their holidays, including Terry Wogan who is being replaced by a fellow called Jonathan Ross, although the programme is still called Wogan. All week he has been asking people really stupid questions. On Wednesday, Norman Wisdom came on, pretending to be in the wrong studio looking for Wogan. This is an old and tired joke, and it should be left lying down, even in July. [...] Soon, Wogan will be back."

A large amount of Billy Idol's interview goes beyond what would normally be allowed in the family timeslot for Wogan, with Jonathan Ross looking offscreen at crew members throughout.
A question about whether he's a born again Christian sees Billy joke that it's a misunderstanding and he's into "porn again", while a clip from his latest music video sees him ask if they can play more of the clip as it features breasts. "Not on this show you can't", replies Jonathan.

During Jonathan Ross's interview with Billy Idol, it's notable that Idol sniffs on a few occasions. While the inferral that this is a symptom of cocaine use would normally be unfair speculation, Idol himself admitted to excessive drug use after the completion of his 1990 album "Charmed Life".
In his 2015 autobiography "Dancing with Myself" Idol wrote that what followed the album was: "Two years of never-ending booze, broads, and bikes, plus a steady diet of pot, cocaine, ecstacy, smack, opium, quaaludes, and reds."
