- As Henry seeks to have his marriage to Anne of Cleves annulled and Cromwell removed, Bryan pimps teenage Catherine Howard as Henry's new mistress.
- Mary is attracted to Anne's cousin Philip of Bavaria but he is a Protestant and so marriage is impossible. Henry tires of Anne and Bryan procures 17-year old Katherine Howard to 'amuse' him. He gives her jewels and Nonsuch Palace. She gives him her cherry. Henry seeks to prove the marriage to Anne is void but Cromwell will not support him. A group of conspirators jealous of Cromwell - including Gardner and Brandon - have him arrested for treason on the grounds that he permitted heretic preachings. He is beheaded in a grotesque execution by a drunken headsman who botches the killing, appalling even his foes.Simultaneously Anne is told that her marriage is illegal but she is to be known as "the king's sister" and will be given property and an annuity. First she presents her charming but equally Lutheran cousin, duke Philip of Bavaria, to princess Mary, which after enjoyable courting ends in an amicable parting. Sir Francis Bryan selects from an orphanage-brothels for aristocratic bastards young Catherine Howard as sensual playmate for Henry. Charles Brandon, the Seymours and friends expertly arrange for Cromwell to get full blame for the Cleves marriage, so he's deposed, jailed and condemned for high treason. - The King may have found a way to have his marriage to Anne of Cleves annulled. She was once promised to another in a binding agreement meaning that she belonged to someone else. That and the fact that his marriage was never consummated gives him what he wants. He is kind to her nonetheless offering that if she accepts the annulment, she would officially become the King's Sister with an annuity and lodgings. She accepts. Sir Frances Bryan introduces him to the young and pretty Katherine Howard who certainly meets all of the King's needs and desires. The plotters now feel they have the upper hand and have Cromwell arrested for treason. His execution is a messy affair as Bryan ensures the executioner has a hard night of drinking beforehand.—garykmcd
