Duran Duran launched their 2023 “Future Past North American Tour” at Napa Valley’s BottleRock Festival on Saturday, May 27th.
To kick off their headlining set, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame group quickly dispatched several of their biggest hits, including “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Notorious,” and “A View to a Kill.” In a career-spanning sequence befitting the ethos behind their 2021 LP, Future Past, the band reached as far back as their 1981 debut single “Planet Earth,” while touching on key eras with tracks like 1984’s “The Reflex,” 1993’s “Ordinary World,” and their latest LP’s “Anniversary.”
The night also included the first live rendition of the Future Past duet “Give It All Up” with Tove Lo, who performed with the band and separately earlier in the day. Following 1981’s “Girls on Film” as the main set’s closer, the band returned with a double Rio encore of “Save a Prayer” and the iconic title track.

These days soap fans know Cynthia Watros as Nina Reeves on General Hospital. Before stirring up trouble in Port Charles, Watros played the villainous Annie Dutton on Guiding Light. Watros’ work on the CBS soap opera launched her into stardom, and she owes it all to an influential co-star.

PBS International has unveiled the trailer for “Casa Susanna,” Sébastien Lifshitz’s follow up to “Little Girl,” which is having its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival in the Giornate degli Autori section. Produced by Agat Films, Arte France and American Experience Films, in association with BBC Storyville, the documentary film will have its North American premiere at Toronto on Sept. 9.
“Susanna” delivers a look at the underground network of transgender women and cross-dressing men who found refuge at a modest house in the Catskills region of New York during the 1950’s and 1960’s. Known as Casa Susanna, the house provided a safe place for them to express their true selves and live for a few days as they had always dreamed—dressed as women without fear of being incarcerated or institutionalized for their self-expression.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced the nominees for the class of 2022 earlier this week, and the list includes Eminem, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Carly Simon, Judas Priest, A Tribe Called Quest, the New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, and Duran Duran.

Sébastien Lifshitz’s “Little Girl,” a documentary about a 7-year-old transgender girl in France named Sasha, has the feel and texture of a contemplative narrative feature. Lifshitz envelops Sasha and her family in a sort of visual cocoon, as if to cradle them, shooting them in gentle afternoon light when they’re outside and in protective shadows when they are inside their house. His touch here is so delicate that it makes most American talking-heads documentaries look particularly crude and formulaic by comparison.
Lifshitz has made some narrative features, including the memorably erotic “Come Undone” with Stéphane Rideau and “Wild Side,” in which he was ahead of the curve in 2004 with casting a transgender actor, Stéphanie Michelini, in a transgender leading role, but he has focused in recent years on documentaries. It was while making “Bambi,” a portrait of the 1950s Parisian trans dancer and showgirl Marie-Pierre Pruvot, that Lifshitz...

Oscar nominated and Golden Globe winning actress Taraji P. Henson is making her feature directorial debut the Bron Studios’ drama Two-Faced in which she’ll also star.
Two-Faced, written by Cat Wilkins, follows Joy, a Black high school senior whose chances to attend the college of her dreams are threatened by her wildly popular and charismatic school principal, Jerald, after she confronts him with evidence of his racist past. With the help of her friends, Joy sets out to expose Jerald for who he truly is but quickly learns that he is not above waging all-out-war against the students trying to take him down. Henson will play Gina Robinson, Joy’s mother.
Wilkins recently graduated from the Mfa Screenwriting Program at UCLA. Her Two-Faced screenplay won first place in the feature comedy category at the 2020 UCLA Screenwriters Showcase. Henson and her Tph Entertainment will produce with Aaron L. Gilbert on behalf of Bron, Tim Story on behalf of The Story Company and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett. EPs are Wilkins, Christine Conley and Trent Hubbard.
Said Henson: “After two decades spent in front of the camera, I’m thrilled to finally jump behind it for my feature directorial debut! What first attracted me to this project was Joy – she is the character I needed to see in films growing up, but never had. It’s important that stories be told from a woman’s point of view and partnering with Bron Studios and the amazingly talented Tim Story – both who use their platforms to help elevate women and people of color – feels like the perfect match. I can’t wait to bring this hilariously heartfelt script by Cat Wilkins to life!”
Added Gilbert: “Taraji is an important voice in the world and Bron is thrilled to support her directorial debut, of a script from Cat Wilkins, that through its comedic elements examines race and culture in America. We also look forward to working with Taraji’s long-time collaborator Tim Story and the rest of the team behind the film.”
Said Story: “I could not be more excited to support one of the most talented people I have ever known. Taraji and I have done three movies together and I knew it was only a matter of time before she would make this leap to directing and I am honored to produce this film along with Bron Studios. Taraji is like family to me and I cannot wait for everyone to see her directorial vision of this hilarious script by Cat Wilkins brought to the screen.”
Bron Releasing and UTA Independent Film Group will oversee film sales and distribution.
Henson won a Golden Globe in 2016 in the Best Actress TV Series Drama category for her turn on Fox’s Empire. She was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category at the Oscars in 2009 for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. She’s also a 2017 SAG Ensemble winner for the feature Hidden Figures. Henson directed the 2020 episode “Come Undone” of Empire. Her Executive Producer feature credits include No Good Deed, Proud Mary and What Men Want.
She is represented by M88, UTA, Ziffren Brittenham and The Lede Company. Wilkins is represented by UTA and Echo Lake Entertainment. Story and The Story Company are repped by UTA, Ziffren Brittenham and The Collins Jackson Agency.

Earlier this week, we posted an extensive interview with veteran backup singer Tessa Niles as part of our ongoing Unknown Legends series. She got her big break back in 1983 when the Police hired her for their Synchronicity world tour, and she went on to sing with everyone from Tina Turner and Pet Shop Boys to Eric Clapton and George Harrison. She even sang with David Bowie during his Live Aid set, even if he got her name wrong in front of about 2 billion people during the band introductions.

En Vogue will be musical guests on the March 17 episode of “Empire,” which also happens to be star Taraji P. Henson’s directorial debut of the show.
The group — Cindy Herron-Braggs, Terry Ellis and Rhona Bennett — will appear as themselves when Cookie (played by Henson) books them as a musical guest on her talk show “Tea Talk.” The show, titled “Come Undone” after an En Vogue song, is the third of 10 final episodes of the series, which premiered in 2015.
