Netflix has greenlit a six-episode dark comedy series from Tom Segura.
Per the official description, the currently untitled series “centers on Segura, who also serves as the show’s narrator, as he takes us through each episode in a series of vignettes. The twisted comedic sensibility of Tom’s standup is the core DNA of this series, where every story will unfold in a hilariously disturbing way only he could imagine.”
Segura wrote, self-financed and produced the pilot before selling it to Netflix, which is producing the full series later this year and releasing it in 2025. Rami Hachach directed the pilot.
Netflix ordered the series based on a pilot that Segura produced himself. Segura also wrote the pilot, which was directed by Rami Hachach.

From their HGTV parody show “The Curse” to a possible reunion with “Uncut Gems” star Adam Sandler, Josh and Benny Safdie are keeping busy. Next up, the filmmaking brothers are executive-producing a still-untitled Andy Kaufman documentary, now officially underway at Tremolo Productions. That’s the documentary outfit run by Academy Award-winning director Morgan Neville (“Twenty Feet from Stardom”). The documentary will also be executive-produced by famed record producer and former Columbia Records co-founder and filmmaker Rick Rubin, which means this project has some serious wattage behind it.
The documentary will be directed by Alex Braverman, Emmy-nominated director on “Gaycation” as well as the series “Waffles + Mochi,” and he worked as a producer at Vice.
Why anyone hasn’t made an Andy Kaufman documentary yet is anyone’s guess, though the comedian was explored in the 1999 Milos Forman film “Man on the Moon” starring Jim Carrey, whose experience playing the...

1. “Cowboy Bebop” (available November 19)
Why Should I Watch? Calling the original anime “Cowboy Bebop” a cult classic doesn’t quite do justice to its impact on animation, television, and culture at large. Hajime Yatate’s neo-noir space western originally ran in the late ’90s, hopping across two Japanese TV networks to air its 26 episodes before becoming the first anime title to premiere on Adult Swim here in the States (circa 2001). Often referred to as a bridge for animation fans to invest in anime, as well as Western audiences to appreciate a medium originated in the East, “Cowboy Bebop” is also just a flat-out wild time. Bounty hunters are called cowboys, the Earth is practically uninhabitable, and space is the de facto travel frontier. Aboard the spaceship Bebop, a group of “cowboys” hunt down dangerous convicts for the right price, led by Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir), and...

Priya Swaminathan is stepping down from her role as co-head of film and television at Higher Ground, the media company founded by President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama.
At the same time, the former president and First Lady announced several new additions to the company’s executive team, most notably hiring Joe Paulsen, an old Obama hand, as head of business and strategy.
Swaminathan, a former executive at Annapurna, was the first hire the Obamas made when they launched Higher Ground. She has helped grow the company since joining it in 2019, overseeing the rollout of the Oscar-winning documentary “American Factory” and the Oscar-nominated “Crip Camp.” The decision to leave the company was Swaminathan’s own and she remains a favorite of the Obamas, as evidenced by a glowing statement they released.
“We are so grateful to Priya for her tremendous impact at Higher Ground these past few years,” the Obamas said in a statement.

Ellen DeGeneres will executive produce the hour-long special coming this summer
If you know Tig Notaro’s deadpan comedy, you know she’s never one to get too animated on stage, though that’s exactly what she’ll be doing for her new stand-up comedy special.
Notaro has set her next stand-up comedy special at HBO to premiere this summer, and the special will be the first fully animated hour of stand-up comedy.
Ellen DeGeneres is executive producing the special, which reunites the two after working together on both Netflix specials “Tig Notaro Happy to Be Here” in 2018 and “Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable,” which Notaro co-directed.
Notaro worked with animation studio Six Point Harness to produce the special. The studio has previously worked on the Oscar-winning short “Hair Love” as well as “Lazor Wulf,” “Guava Island” and “Waffles + Mochi.”

Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci create earworms about eggs and salt. If you’ve been watching Netflix’s new children’s series, “Waffles + Mochi,” then songs like “Crack Me Up” and “Umami” are already embedded in your head. But for the songwriting team, known to most people as the duo Garfunkel and Oates, found the series offered them a whole new opportunity: To cement themselves as individual songwriters — just Riki and Kate — and write and create the exact kind of music they want.
It all started with a song about a tomato. That was the pitch presented to them by series co-creator Jeremy Konner, who’d worked with the two on the Comedy Central comedy “Another Period.” “He, at first, asked us to write a song when he was pitching the show; it was a concept,” Lindhome told IndieWire. “He called us and said, ‘Hey, can you do me a favor?...

On March 21st it was ‘International Puppet Day’ which celebrated ventriloquists all over the world (don’t worry I didn’t know either!) and I have recently reignited my love for puppetry as an art form and how entertaining it can be done… if done right. Now I love the likes of Jeff Dunham and Avenue Q, which are more mature and controversial puppet-based acts, whereas the new Netflix show Waffles and Mochi is a more watered-down, classical child-friendly puppet show where best friends Waffles and Mochi (based on the Japanese rice cake) who travel the world to find out about new foods to become chefs. The issue of reviewing shows that are intended for a younger audience is very difficult as I am not a young child! This means you have to review the show in two mindsets, one as an adult watching the show and reviewing it based...

Barack Obama knows his way around a kitchen! On Tuesday, March 23's all-new E! News' Daily Pop, Michelle Obama dished on her husband's cooking skills while promoting her new Netflix show, Waffles + Mochi. According to the former First Lady, the 44th President of the United States had three specialties when they first got married. "He came cooking," she told E!'s Justin Sylvester. "But he had like, sort of, his three recipes." As the healthy eating advocate continued, she revealed that Mr. Obama made "a mean chili," "a good stir fry" and "great omelets." "So, he had kind of his…wheelhouse," she noted. "He stayed in that...

Michelle Obama is ready to educate the next generation. On Wednesday, March 17's all-new E! News' Daily Pop, co-host Justin Sylvester spoke with the former First Lady about her new Netflix show, Waffles + Mochi, which premiered on March 16. During the chat, we got to meet Mrs. Obama's adorable new co-stars and learn all about the Waffles + Mochi mission. "One of the things that Waffles + Mochi does a good job with is showing families affordable and doable meals. Because oftentimes, if you know what you're doing in the kitchen, it can be more affordable to cook at home than to go out," she shared. "Now, the challenge that we face in this country is access to affordable, fresh produce....

Jimmy Kimmel isn't letting go of one particular talking point regarding Michelle and Barack Obama's sex life. The former first lady visited Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday, March 16 to promote her Netflix series Waffles + Mochi. While she was there, the host reminded her about a question he had asked her several years ago during a stop on her book tour in Tacoma, Wash. "I asked you that on the night that Seal Team Six took out Osama bin Laden at your husband's order, did you and your husband make love that night to celebrate," Jimmy said about the al-Qaeda leader's death in May 2011. After chuckling, Michelle replied, "You know, I have to tell your audience that for...

Michelle Zamora, of Viva La Puppet, has worked as a puppeteer on titles including “Garfunkel & Oates,” “Comedy Central’s Adult Swim Fun House” and “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” to name just a few. But stepping into “Waffles + Mochi,” Netflix’s food-based series that starts streaming Tuesday, raised the bar for what puppets could do on-camera — by having them eat.
“I did not think I would be eating soup as a puppet,” Zamora tells Variety. “Puppets usually don’t touch human food because it’s just not practical: you could ruin the puppet, why would you want to do that? Just make a foam cookie or what-not — usually just something that looks like food and they go, ‘Om nom nom nom nom.’ With Waffles, the challenge was that we really wanted to see her experience these foods — and doing it in a way that wasn’t gross.”

In the luminous children’s food literacy comedy Waffles + Mochi, we follow two aspiring chefs as they venture from their homeland, a frozen food tundra where ice is on the menu each meal, to a sunny city where they soon get entry level jobs at a community-minded grocery store. Our chattier hero is Waffles, a fuzzy white-and-periwinkle woolen puppet with black button eyes, crispy waffle ears and just two adorable molars lining her mouth. (Her mother was a yeti and her father was a frozen waffle. Don’t think about it too hard or you might accidentally liquefy your brain....

As first lady, Michelle Obama grew a vegetable garden at the White House to make children more curious about what they eat. These days, what she grows takes a more visible form. Obama produces (with her husband) and appears (with puppets) in the Netflix series “Waffles + Mochi,” part of the former first couple’s Higher Ground Prods. deal with the streamer. This is less lofty than other Higher Ground projects, but it will likely appeal to the most inquisitive among the younger set.
Waffles, performed by puppeteer Michelle Zamora, is a creature — half-waffle and half-Yeti — who emerges from a grocery-store freezer to explore the world outside. Waffles’ friend, Mochi (Russ Walko), communicates, like R2-D2, in a series of whirs and beeps that only a best pal can understand. The pair are, if not as instantly distinctive as, say, Bert and Ernie, possessed of a winning goofball spirit. Together,...

The streaming wars are just as fiery and competitive as ever. Disney+ now has one Marvel TV show under its belt (WandaVision), with another one to come in March (The Falcon and The Winter Soldier). In response, Netflix is broadening its reach with its list of new releases for March 2021.
Netflix always features plenty of international options for viewers across the globe, but March is the first month where it seems as though international releases make up roughly half of Netflix’s originals. And that’s great! China’s The Yin Yang Master and Spain’s Coven of Sisters both look to be intriguing films this month.
