Hard to believe the high rating on IMDB
TheDome8121 November 2022
I watched this one because it rated an 8.7. I suspect friends and family of people who were involved in the making of this film voted multiple times. I'm not saying it was bad, but it wasn't that great. It seemed like a two-hour soap opera. The acting was okey. But the writing was just so so. It was rather predictable and it went on far too long. It could have easily been done in a little over an hour. And when I read headlines for reviews that say "Amazing Movie with surprises along the way..." I should be a little suspicious. So if you're looking for a film that's been done before and you have some time to kill, check it out. I just with I had that two hours back.

A competent B movie
Boristhemoggy20 May 2023
Beat is about a homeless man and an aspiring musician brought together by fate, with a surprising ending.

I love the idea of the story, it's a new idea to me and has the potential to be inspiring and uplifting.

However, throughout the film there is some very odd dialogue which stood out enough to spoil the flow of the movie. There are also some scenes which go on too long, and as they are at that point unexplained, they just serve to make me impatient and bored.

There is some great acting throughout by Jensen but apart from her the roles are mediocre all the way down to Dr Mordon, who's acting and dialogue are both abysmal.

If you go into this film expecting a decent B movie you won't be disappointed.

Twists and turns coupled with outstanding acting made this an absolute treat to watch. I will be keeping my eye on Jye Currie's work in the future. A must watch.

Engaging, Unexpected and Entertaining

Beat is an incredible film that tells an extremely intriguing story filled with an extraordinary music score, meaningful characters, beautiful scenes and unexpected twists! It is well written, characters are well acted, every scene is intelligently shot and directed! I highly recommend taking the time to watch this film and let it take you on a roller coaster of emotion as it tackles the very real world of homelessness, substance abuse and working in the live music industry.

I have absolutely nothing bad to say about this film, without getting into spoilers, it left me feeling surprised, empathetic, moved and satisfied that made me want to watch the film again with the additional knowledge of my first viewing, being even more enthralled the second time around and blown away yet again. I cannot sing this film enough praises!

Emotional, Powerful and just amazing

First heard of them film when someone on instagram announced they knew someone they knew was going to be in this but had to ultimately withdraw due to the 'goat show' happening in NSW at the time, I held my breathe baited until I saw this.

What an amazing piece this is. Showing the lights and sounds of Newcastle at its very very best. Jye Currie is a tremendous director who brings to light just how confronting the movie can be at times.

The music was just one of the most hauntingly beautiful things to listen to, the emotions of everyone involved was amazing.

Jye if you read this, i look forward to your next project. This is worth watch after watch after watch.

Emotional and soulful story of human connection
garredz21 August 2022
Jye Currie's first feature, BEAT, is a complex, slow burn story of connection and emotion.

It is a confronting look at how the income gaps in Australia can colour perspectives of people, but also that kindness is sometimes the most valuable currency we have.

Jye Currie's direction is intimate, slow, focused. He let's the story unfold at a beautiful pace with a captivating classical score over it. Anchored by the engrossing and vulnerable performance of Rachel Carpani, Jye lets the audience deduce moments of the story. It is subtle, elegant while also being quite confronting at times.

A very promising up and coming director!

10/10 Movie!!
beecharmer-963073 February 2024
Rachael Carpani, who plays Susan, the main character's Mum, was the reason why I wanted to watch that movie in the first place!! Of course she did not disappoint, but omg the whole movie is a real masterpiece!! It's heart-warming and heart-wrenching at the same time with unexpected twists. It broke my heart a few times and I was shedding some tears, too. The director is a genius if you ask me. The music is also beautiful. BEAT is definitely worth watching!! Whoever reads this, go watch this incredibly wonderful movie. (I don't want to spoil anyone, so I better stop here!!) 10 out of 10 really!!

"Beat," directed by Jye Currie, is a cinematic gem that deserves far more recognition than it receives. Starring Alexandra Jensen and Sebastian Szeszeran, this film is a testament to the power of storytelling and the skill of its creators. From its inception, "Beat" captivates audiences with its multi-layered narrative and original approach to storytelling.

At the heart of "Beat" lies Alexandra Jensen's mesmerizing performance as Ellie, a pianist whose music serves as a window into her inner world. Jensen's portrayal is nothing short of extraordinary, seamlessly weaving emotion and vulnerability into every note she plays. Through Ellie's live performances, viewers are offered a glimpse into her psyche, enriching the storytelling with depth and authenticity.

Director Jye Currie's masterful direction is evident throughout the film, as he deftly navigates the intricate layers of the narrative. Despite its modest budget of $35,000 USD, "Beat" exudes cinematic excellence, thanks in no small part to Currie's vision and ingenuity.
