This is a fascinating miniseries with some appearances of historical figures.
It is a nice way to learn more about the history of Ukraine and its relationship to the Russian Empire and later to the USSR, as well as Germany.
There is a English subtitled version available online (or at least there was at the time of this writing).
The spoken language in the movie is mostly Russian with some provincial Ukrainian, and a bit of German.
The single best quote in the movie is in the first or second episode when Mother Makhno is visiting a lawyer to try to get her son released from prison/death sentence. The lawyer tells her:
"You cannot defeat a prosecutor with tears."
