The first episode of Together is told from the viewpoint of Derek Harding.
He is the new elderly resident of Housing Association flats. Newly widowed, he is being dropped of by his daughter and son in law who is in the army. They are off to West Germany as that is his next posting.
Through Derek we meet the other residents, next door to him are a young newly married couple.
Martha Finch is upset that Derek has bought his dog with him as pets are not allowed.
Of course Derek plans to be here short term. He is preparing to kill himself and the dog. No explanation was given as to why Derek's dog was allowed to stay when no pets are allowed in the housing complex.
Together was an afternoon soap opera made by Southern Television. It ran twice a week for 13 weeks. It finished as Southern lost its ITV franchise in 1982.
It is cheaply made with its all interior sets. At least the cast consists of some well known character actors such as Victor Maddern and Kathleen Byron.
The first episode is a gentle introduction. Given the cast, you can easily assume that this is a housing block for the elderly or an old people's home. It is only the young couple that tells you otherwise.
