One of the bravest decisions in TV-series, ever.
jakobbulow14 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
This was absolutely an awesome episode, as well as the whole season 4. It has amazed me in every way and i stand in awe. The creativeness and ingenious minds behind the show sure know how to amaze me at least. I have been waiting eagerly every week for this show every Sunday. The whole plot was twisted and turned throughout the whole season. This season is in my opinion, the best so far, and i couldn't think of a better way to end the season. When he dumped Arthur Mitchell's body into the ocean, i thought to myself: "Wow, what a season, but seriously? Is this it?" - It wasn't long before i was speechless. Never have i seen something so awesome, i actually found myself sitting with an open mouth, saying "Hell, no". When (spoiler) Rita was murdered in the bath tub, i was first offended, but then i couldn't help but say: "This was brilliant, one of the bravest decisions in TV-series, ever." This season-end differed from the others, and it contributed to creating the best season so far, in my opinion.

This Season had a fantastic Villain in John Lithgow. He was fantastic as the deranged serial killer .Arthur Mitchell is really scary. This season leaves you feeling bad for Dexter Morgan. Julie Benz gives a layered performance and Jennifer Carpenter is flawless The Thriller keeps you at the edge of your seat and the conversations that the Character has with himself are fantastic ..Includes conversation with his deceased father Harry Morgan .

The normality within the insanity
saharso8 October 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The 4th season was all about answering a question: can Dexter combine his violent urges and dangerous way of life with maintaining a family? Despite numerous premonitions, such as the car accident at the first episode, the accidental murder of an innocent photographer and the cracks in Dexter's exterior expressed in uncontrollable violent outbursts that he never exhibited previously, Dexter keeps finding ways to convince himself that this combination is within his capabilities.

Dexter's mind is in an internal conflict over the issue. One part of him, which is personified by an image of his father, is cautious and inconfident in Dexter's ability to control himself and keep his family from harm's way. Dexter mostly tends to reject and repress this part of his psyche and continue on living a double life with tow full-time jobs: a devoted family-man and a ferocious hunter of this season's main antagonist: the Trinity Killer.

Early on Dexter discovers that Trinity is also living a double life and seems to do this quite successfully: for decades he manages to juggle serial killing, raising what seems to be a sound and happy family and even volunteering for the community. Dexter decides to postpone killing Trinity in order to learn from him how is that combination possible. At first Trinity seems to provide helpful advice, even support. But as Dexter gets closer, he realizes to his horror that Trinity's healthy family life is nothing but a cruel deception: Trinity keeps his family captive by methods of household terrorism in order to maintain a façade for the outside world.

Angry at himself for not seeing that, Dexter decides to kill Trinity immediately. In his rage he even disrupts his co-workers' advances in the Trinity killings investigation. But he is too late by now. Trinity kills again and this time the blood is partially on the hands of the hesitant Dexter. All his defenses against Trinity were shuttered by now and Trinity soon discovers his true identity – putting Dexter and his family in great risk.

The answer to the initial question then explodes into Dexter's reality only at the final scene. And we can only speculate on its consequences, for now Dexter is forced to make all the painful decisions which he kept on postponing so irresponsibly.

The ending came as a horrific surprise for most viewers, myself included. But early signs that this may happen can be found as early as in season 2, especially in the dialogues with Sergeant Doakes. The viewers, just like Dexter, refused to recognize the warnings, and so they also paid a price for identifying with a serial killer's mind, and wishing that he could have it all. To put things dialectically, the growing contradiction in Dexter's life had to reach a catastrophic boiling point, which will completely alter, perhaps revolutionize, the future of the character.

The fact that we can identify with a killer such as Dexter should not surprise us, nor should we blame ourselves for doing so. All of us have parts and desires that we want to conceal from society, even those closest to us. Expressing ourselves differently from what we really are is normal, and it doesn't always mean that our exterior appearance is a fake. Dexter was surprised to learn that his feelings for his family are real, but It is normal for a person to have contradicting desires. So one needs to constantly maintain that dynamic and keep it under control. In Dexter's case, however, maintaining and controlling such desires requires much more work than was initially believed.

I used to hate Rita...
realtvhrdbfq-114 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
From the beginning to the 4th season finale of the series, I always hoped that writers would kill Rita, or Dexter have a divorce. And after a long chase between Dexter and Arthur Mitchell, we came to the "shocking" end and actually it didn't shock me, it just made me sad, really sad.

As I said, I didn't like Rita but her end was not shocking, not surprising, it was just tragic and depressing. Especially, when I looked from the aspect of Dexter, I felt terrible for him.

Until 4th season, the winner was always Dexter. In this season, there is no winner.

I congratulate the writers for making this show better, maybe the best in time.

You got balls!! (non-spoiler)
younismoustafa17 August 2020
Whoever took the decision of ending the 4th season by this way has some balls, it is very very bold, brave and ruthless ending . It is the most touching dramatic work I have seen in the category of tv shows, it aches my heart remembering what happened even if I know that she is just a character in a tv show. Very brave move and very sad ending.

Terrific and nerve-wrecking. Includes a Dreadful, Dark Disaster for our protagonist
TheHeroWithNoFear14 December 2009
This episode twists and turns at considerable speed and challenges your emotions. It ends in a way that changes everything in Dexter's world forever and leaves a door of uncertainty open that should result in a nail-biting fifth season. To the creators and actors of Dexter; I salute you. Well done Michael C Hall and a special thanks to the man who made the whole thing possible: Jeff Lindsay.

The episode is virtually flawless in it's execution in good drama and it reflects the great writing that the show is known for. John Lithgow's serial killer is as creepy as ever, but will he be able to handle the young streamlined beast that resides within Michael C Hall's Dexter? Watch it to find out how these two killers try to take the advantage over the other and be prepared to witness one of the most shocking events in TV Drama history.

Closing the Season with Golden Key
claudio_carvalho5 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Trinity threatens Dexter and leaves the Miami Metro in his van chased by Dexter that drives like a crazy obsessed to kill the serial-killer. Dexter hits a car's mirror and when he injects a drug in Trinity, he finds that the driver has followed him and brought the police. Dexter is arrested and can not kill Trinity that flees. Meanwhile Debra finds the truth about Laura Moser and Brian and Dexter's origins.

Dexter convinces Rita to travel to the Keys with Harrison while Astor and Cody travel to Disney with their grandparents. The Miami Metro's detectives discover that Trinity's cycles begin with the disappearance of ten year-old boys and Debra interviews Scott Smith that draws the logo of the Four Walls and they begin the manhunt for Arthur Mitchell. Dexter finds Trinity and when he comes back home, he has a grim surprise.

"The Getaway" is probably the darkest and most sinister episode of Dexter. The unexpected conclusion of this season is awesome and closes the Fourth Season with golden key. My vote is ten.

Best episode of the series
the-hero-108 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
-First to say that I never imaging this ending at all and when I saw it I just completely knew why won the Emmy for Directing 'Steve Shill'. Dexter 'Michael C. Hall' always kills his victims in just seconds after investigating them about some evidence to prove they are guilt of a murder. But with Arthur Mitchell or Trinity Killer 'John Lithgow' it wasn't in that way. He was worried about the idea of how his family would be after years living with him and with his dark passenger, so Trinity looks to Dexter like a 'mentor'. He screwed up everything when Trinity followed him to the Miami Metro Police Department and discover his real identity. 'Hello, Dexter Morgan' were the worst words which Dexter wanted to hear from Trinity's mouth. It forced him to look for an opportunity to king nap him and kill him but the things got worse and worse. Miami Metro Police were investigating Trinity as the same time Dexter wanted to kill him. For the entire season, Harry told messages about his family and if he would be able to live the family life, and the killing life at the same time. So after Debra, Masuka, Quinn, Batista and LaGuerta found Dexter in Trinity's Harry told Dexter to leave his family and go away. Dexter loved his family and he wanted to take care of them forever he was ready for that, so he didn't wanted to leave them and go away, especially if Trinity was out there. And the other big moment of the episode was when Debra seemed to told Dexter that she knows who really was. She knew that his biological mother Laura Moser was with his adoptive father Harry Morgan and knew that the Ice Truck Killer was his blood brother and nothing else that's it but Dexter was really scared about what was gonna tell him. After Dexter and Rita talked about the honeymoon and the kids went to Disney World Dexter just had two things to do, Find Trinity and kill him. Dexter finally found him in the act of leaving the city and disappearing. After a whole season to kill Arthur at last kill him. He was imaging when he was in the ocean dropping Trinity's parts of body how his life would become and was normal until he came home. In the last second Rita came home to get her identification but, someone left Dexter a big surprise. Rita was dead in the bath tub and Harrison in the ocean of blood of her, just like the death of Dexter's Mother. He realized for sure that he was the responsible for the Rita's Death and that he couldn't kill and have a family at the same time. That's why Harry said him that killers are always lonely. The Biggest Twist and shocking moment of the series that makes this episode the Best of the series in my opinion.

Season 4: Another season that is consistently strong and hard to fault (MASSIVE SPOILERS)
bob the moo29 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
After three consistently strong seasons I came into season 4 with nothing to worry about in theory. However my own lack of imagination perhaps made me wonder what the writers could do to make this show keep going – surely they could not come up with another 12 hours of television that grips and engages as well as they have done thus far. In another show the 4th season addition of a baby and a guest star in Lithgow would perhaps smack of obvious plot devices to make things happen (the baby) and freshen up the cast to get viewers watching again (Lithgow), but for Dexter neither of these things are true because there is nothing weakening about this show that needs to be artificially propped up.

Season 4 sees Dexter struggling to carry his dark passenger while living in his new suburban home as a clean-cut family man and father of a new-born infant. At the same time the retired Frank Lundy returns to Miami to follow what he believes is a serial killer that murders in groups of three all over the country. Of course there is a lot more going on in and around this central plot in the way that Dexter viewers will be used to now. It continues to be incredibly engaging and satisfying and as before the season long narrative is rewardingly good. Considering the trend now for "a case per week" shows, Dexter could easily be another one of those, with a victim each week providing the action while slowly moving characters forward in a bigger picture – thankfully it is much stronger than that and all the better for it.

Here the season long thread of Trinity ties in perfectly with a lot of other things going on – Dexter's own struggle to balance "family" with "serial killing" for example, Debra's emotions over the return (and then loss again) of Lundy. The only thing that didn't really ring true for me was the journalist being Trinity's daughter – that seemed a jump but the next episode moved quickly to shore it up so it didn't bother me too much. That each thread works well within the other and as stand-alones the show is made stronger and more engaging. As a result we don't need a shocking cliff-hanger to feel satisfied or involved – one episode ends with Dexter's own amusement at the thought that he might have human characteristics ("huh" he says as the episode ends) and this is as strong as some of the more impacting conclusions.

Speaking of "impacting conclusions" I have to talk about the season finale. Personally I found it a little underwhelming and surprisingly empty for a show that delivers so consistently. Rita's death is Dexter's fault – just like Doakes' was, but yet where I felt a strong response to the latter, the former left me cold. OK she is a little bit of a damp character but it was so sudden and then the show ended that it didn't have time to soak in. Likewise the final scene with Trinity – it was the last 10 minutes of the episode and it could have done better with more time for the two great actors to work off one another for one last time. Season 5 picks up just where this one left off, so the tester will be if it can deliver the heart that I felt was missing in Rita's death – I feel confident it can but I was still a little disappointed by how this twist was done.

As ever the cast are strong here. Hall is brilliant in his scenes and his narration. He continues to get his delivery just right for the character and does the writing justice – here we have a character that is driven to kill others, fakes most of his emotional interactions but yet the viewer is with him the vast majority of the time. Lithgow is a great addition; he is great across the whole season whether showing fear, vulnerability, rage or just pure evil – he convinces in all his states and grips the eye in every scene. Yet again Carpenter has another strong season and is better yet again. This season hands her a lot of emotion to deliver on and she could have not only hammed it up but also gotten into a rut of repeating her delivery. Instead she is convincingly real and her emotions feel as raw and natural as they should. Below these Benz continues to be OK but it is hard not to feel that season 5 may be better without her from a story-telling point of view; Oz colleagues Velez and Zayas have some sappy material but it still works. Lee is funny while Harrington is solid enough although I suspect season 5 will make more of his soured relationship with Dexter and give him more to work with. Remar may only be in flashback but his contributions are always important and his restraint is very much appreciated as his role is essentially the "code" part of Dexter's subconscious.

Dexter was a show that I came to very late and got into very quickly when I did. It has amoral content but yet it is easy to be emotionally involved; it is not a thriller but yet it grips at times while all the narrative threads are engaging and work well together. It is simply great television and season 4 marks itself as yet another consistent quality delivery and another reason to sing the praises of Dexter to those not watching. Season 5 started in the US not too long ago and, despite my reservations over the twist made in this season, I am very much looking forward to following this show into the next season.

One of the best season finales in the history of modern television
Premium-TV28 February 2021
First of all, this is one of my favorite episodes, and one of the bravest season finales in modern television. An all-consuming thriller that contains the full range of emotions through 51 unforgettable minutes.

John Glithow tops a solid season with a fantastic performance as the gruesome and sinister Arthur Mitchell. The end of the episode is one of the most insane twists I have experienced as a viewer, something I want to thank the creators of the series for having the guts to complete. Bravo!

Bold, Daring, and Very Effective

Warning: Spoilers
I am very sad the way the season ended in the sense of the effect it will have on the characters lives, but on another note, I am so thrilled the writers ended a season this way. Season 1: Dexter kills Brian, his brother/the ice truck killer...His life goes on how he wants it...Season 2: Doakes takes the fall for Dexter's murders and crazy bitch Lila gets iced...His life goes on how he wants it...Season 3: Miguel is killed, the branch trimming killer is taken out, Dexter gets married...His life goes on how he wants it... Up until Dexter starts walking into the bathroom, I was disappointed that another season of Dexter was falling into the same old story line. 11 intense episodes that Dexter has to figure out how to get the kill, then the 12th episode it happens. The Trinity kill conversation was so boring to me, at first, but now it is a profound and telling conversation for the future life of Dexter and will most likely be replayed all the time in memory sequences for Dexter. Rita dying changes the sequence...it changes the family's lives, and it finally brings the principal forth Harry has said all along...Dexter's fate will eventually catch up to him.

Warning: Spoilers
Dexter has been an excellent show but this episode sends it to the upper echelon of TV. The duel between Dexter and Trinity reaches an incredible climax and end with something completely unexpected. The acting overall throughout the episode was great to watch; Debra had some memorable moments with Dex. No wonder people call this the "true ending of Dexter." This season truly shined the light on what makes Dexter and Arthur the way they are and holds itself as one of the best Dexter has made. Major shoutout to John Lithgow for portraying this villain that I loathed yet sympathized with.

Warning: Spoilers
I watched this knowing full well it would be as amazing as it turned out to be. Dexter has and always will be one of my favourite t.v show, this episode is a perfect justification for this.

**SPOILER**

Do not read on if you haven't seen the end already.

I can't quite work out if i'm happy that the show can be taken in a new direction with Rita's death or if i am so annoyed that this snuck up on me without me anticipating it - one thing is for sure, i'm impressed. They left us with a cliffhanger, not quite expected of the show, yet they did, and i'm glad they did. It was very good and it's made me want more.

Hall was exceptional as ever, as was Jennifer (especially in one touching conversation in which she learns everything)... Did i mention i'm impressed?

Must see episode, heck, must see show.

Just wandering how the 5th season is gonna be!
neylin_yn13 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I think Dexter is one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. The protagonist who is the bad and the good guy at the same time. There aren't many shows like this one. I've been watching it since its beginning, and I haven;t been disappointed once. I've been waiting for this episode for a long time, and what can I say? I just can't believe how this season ended.

Just as we thought that everything ended, one more reason for Dexter to keep going. This episode's ending surprised completely. Dexter's plan to kill Arthur seemed impossible. Near to the end everything turned out to be just as Dexter wanted, but at the very end we (and Dexter himself) discover what Arthur did hours before. Just wondering what is gonna happen next.

I just can't swallow it...
jigsaw-cs14 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I really love the show, I feel it can represent lots of things in our every day life and we could learn a lot about it.

And it's really inspiring, every time Dexter says something, I not only hear it, I think about it, sometimes I don't agree, but the majority of the things he says are opening-eye things, and it's really awesome.

So when I saw this last chapter of the season, I was waiting for something that could inspire me, and it really did, he was just getting in troubles that he couldn't solve, but in the end, everything seemed so great, it had a good something to start the next season with all the thing about Debra finding out of his past, and also the fact that Trinity was seen with Dexter at the police station! But when I saw the blood I just run to the screen and almost didn't breath, I was shocked and I feel so sorry for him... Rita and Debra were the two pillars in Dexter's life and we know Debra has been through way too much so Rita was his only salvation. But what now? He's alone with 3 kids (including a baby) and he has to keep on going, but, how? That's something that will be really hard to solve in next season, I can't wait for it.

Educative ambivalent life crisis, nearly perfect written story and award winning performances
igoatabase14 December 2009
The fourth season had been quite inconsistent so far or maybe it's just the chaotic oscillations of our lives that make some of us feel that way. Can we escape our destiny ? Who is really behind our fate ? Can we even control our darkest emotions and act for the greater good ? These deep questions are asked in this true masterpiece. Its story brought us right back to the first two seasons astonishing quality. The writing was as smart and inspiring as in "Easy as Pie" and "Lost Boys" for example. Moreover even if I found Dexter's flashbacks too literal they succeeded in explaining what his character is all about. However I wished the writers chose the hard way by letting the viewers understand Dr Morgan and Mr Dexter by themselves. It was so fascinating to see him deal with who he is and fight his own demons, of whom the Dark Passenger is the obvious metaphor.

Jennifer Carpenter, Michael C. Hall and John Lithgow did an impressive acting job. The first redeemed herself after his questionable performance in "Hello, Dexter Morgan". But I didn't really blame her talent but the writers or director. Although Deb was herself I found her investigation was rushed as it wasn't properly covered in the last episodes. However it was a minor issue and now that I've checked it's not surprising that The Getaway was written by Scott Reynolds, Melissa Rosenberg and Wendy West. The end was unpredictable and redefined the meaning of "happy ending". The recap was also really helpful to catch up and right from the start the face off between Dexter and Trinity became as intense as I hoped it would be. Watching these monster titans collide was interesting but I wished it had been mesmerizing but I probably just have too high expectations when it comes to Dexter.

Of course we could still complain about the misplaced thirteen seconds scene between Batista and LaGuerta but all the others were so captivating and intense that it wouldn't be fair to the incredible talent of the people behind the show.

Forget season 2, this finale was phenomenal!
Scarlet_Syndicate12 June 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The title says it all really, there I was watching the last five minutes of the episode, beginning to wind down after a great 45 minutes. Then all of a sudden, THAT is sprang on us out of nowhere. Rita lying there in the tub, bled out. All I can say is I was absolutely shocked, thinking the end of the finale would be the usual (but always very good) happy ending, tying up all the loose end, Dexter going home after his season of hard work trying to catch the main serial killer. Not this episode though, it broke so many TV conventions which I think made it so shocking. Needless to say, my mouth was hanging open for those last few minutes and it took a while to compose myself afterward. And I thought season two was good. In fact, this episode was so good, it's actually worth going through the previous 3 seasons and the rest of the fourth just to see this one. The only bad thing now is watching it the second time around won't be as good because I already know what will happen, but nevertheless will still be just as I said in the title, phenomenal.

Cant win them all.
joe_white_420 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The episode we've been waiting for! Arthur's going down, excellent! John Lithgow has been amazing in his role as crazy, psycho creep but its time for him to go. He's not going alone though. The tensions unbearable throughout but that's nothing new for this show; a serial killer always one mistake away from the electric chair. A serial killer we love.

The difference with this series finale, from the three previous, is that instead of removing that tension and allowing us viewers to sit back and think "You've done it again Dexter, you cheeky murderer you" we're left feeling absolutely gutted.

Now for me personally this episode is the best i've seen. Even if at the end I was angry and upset, more for Dexters sake; I was never a huge Rita fan, I appreciate the fact that I was made to feel anything at all. Isn't that why we watch TV? To feel? It cant all be laughs and triumphs in the world of a killer and I commend the writers of the show for making such a bold move.

How will Dexter survive as a single father of three? He was already struggling trying to be too many things at once. Rita's death poses many questions. We want the answers so we'll keep watching. Well played writers, job done.

Ripped my Heart
dilarasdad9 January 2010
I admit the writers really found a way to stick it to me, but this one left a scar. Outstanding ending - I'm in love with all of the characters, but perhaps I let my emotions run away with a few. I'm not sure I will be watching the next season. This one really took a lot out of me.

I understand - it's only a show. But I truly feel I developed an understanding and relationship with the characters. What a world... There's not much available where I live and work these days and I always looked forward to each episode as a way of 'getting revenge'. This episode handed my 'buttocks' back to me.

If only it wasn't so inconsequent
pietmat16 December 2009
Warning: Spoilers
As Dexter's big fan I couldn't wait to see the last episode. The whole season was simply brilliant, definitely best of all 4. And yet I feel disappointed. Don't understand me wrong - the story told in S04 was great - battle between two serial killers! That must be breathtaking. The game of those two men, each playing with his own rules. And the final solution - death of Trinity, and then second hit - Rita dead in bathtub. That was something so unexpected, that I didn't know what to think about it for some time. Later I realized, that such course of events was inevitable. And almost logic. As one of only few thing in this episode. I don't know what was the writers way of thinking, but I don't buy it... Well, come on! How stupid the police must be not to join Dexter with Trinity? Everything what happened in last episode - Trinity visiting the police station (Batista must have seen him), Dex in his garage before everyone else. Dex talking to Trinity's family just before the riot!!! How to explain that? Kyle Butler was present in Mitchell family so many times, that he must be considered as part of it. And earlier, why the kidnapped boy wasn't asked about a kidnapper? They already should have had his portrait. Also not very consistent for me is how Dexter appear next to the mustang after it has broke down, but lets say, that it can still be explained somehow. All these inconsistencies shows us Dexter as a very lucky guy, but ruins the story created throughout previous 3 seasons. Where is Dexter's perfectionism, his precision. Where is old Dex?
