Shows like Euphoria, Pam & Tommy, and The Curse of Von Dutch: A Brand to Die For (a documentary about the trucker hat brand that gained popularity in the early 2000s) are showing us that "trashy" styles are very chic right now. Investigation Discovery (ID) has emerged as non-scripted producers’ favorite network to deal with over the last twelve months.
The factual cable network has topped Npact’s annual rankings with Hulu, CBS and History also being touted as among the top stations to work with.
Npact, the trade association for non-fiction production companies doing business in the U.S., has regularly put out these rankings, although last year they asked producers to name the best partner during Covid-19 with Bravo, Discovery, HBO Max and Netflix coming out top.
Unscripted, documentary and reality producers are asked to collectively gauge their favorite networks and streaming platforms across numerous categories. This year, those categories including virtual pitching, development, greenlighting process, business affairs, production oversight and notes, production management and finance as well as their favorite network and streamer to work with overall.
Some 49 production companies took part.
Investigation Discovery was rated producers’ favorite network to work with overall.

One Friday night in February 2005, Robert “Bobby” Vaughn grabbed his phone from a nightstand in his Los Angeles apartment and dialled 911 to report a shooting. He told the operator that multiple shots were fired inside his home, leaving one person dead. Vaughn was also able to identify the person who killed Mark Rivas, his best friend and roommate: he did it himself.
The fatal shot came at the end of a violent confrontation between the two men, and, Vaughn said, immediately after Rivas attacked him with a broken beer bottle.

Hulu’s The Curse of Von Dutch: A Brand to Die For is a docuseries about a once-inescapable fad, a show that feels bound by two ubiquitous trends of the moment: 2000s nostalgia and true crime. But it fails to divine what should be the big takeaway of any look back at a what-were-we-thinking craze — that just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s a good look.
