Off the Rails and Missed Opportunity
fielding-3825613 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
When I first watched Big Sky, I could tell that there was some good writing behind these stories. The credits contain "Based on The Highway series by C. J. Box", so I read the series, to confirm that Yes, indeed, there is some good writing behind this TV series and became a fan of C. J. Box. The first season of this show, more or less, follows the story in The Highway by Box, which is actually the second in the series featuring the character Cassie Dewell. The second half of the first season does resemble the novel Bitteroots, but some convenient differences. By Season two though, the story is completely off the rails. Which is too bad because they missed a very good opportunity by omitting the character of Cassie Dewell's mother. She would have made a great character for this series. There are a few other omissions that would also have been good to see in this series. And, of course, the obvious thing is the character of Jennie Hoyt. She is a minimal character in the book, but features largely in the series. She also has one of the worst lines I have ever heard on TV: "You don't want to piss off a woman holding a gun" or some such nonsense. And I'm pretty sure that is the moment that this show went off the rails. In Season Three it appears as though they will continue down this path. I'm not saying this is a bad show. It's pretty good, really. I just don't think the credits should include the bit about being "Based on the Highway Series by C. J. Box" I liked the way Ronald buys it in the end in the book as well. It seems more fitting, I guess.

Probably the most far fetched show on television.

Warning: Spoilers
I have seen a lot of dramas that are ridiculous but none QUITE as bad as this one. My girlfriend likes it and I watch it simply for her AND to read the reviews of the show after it airs... it is amazing that 4 kids go out in the woods at night to apparently give each other homemade tattoos AND some creepy guy JUST HAPPENS to be there watch them AND AT THE SAME TIME SOME RANDOM TRUCK CRASHES and a guy kills another guy AND He just happens to have a bag full of dope and cash... and at the very end we get a glides of the guy everyone is looking for... Ronald being held captive by a guy who looks AND sounds just like the dead state trooper Lagarski.... My guess it will be his "evil identical twin"... boy I can't wait for the next episode... this is really a nighttime soap opera!

Over-acted
jessicarver414 October 2021
Am I the only one who thinks every actor is over-acting?? Or is it the writing? I'll continue to watch the season because I enjoyed the last, but seriously the acting is getting to be too much. I'm hoping producers will work to make the show more palatable.

so bad
tezzahols2 October 2021
Cassie and Jennie need to be more likable, they come across as angry ex wives that don't care what mess they create as long as they get their way, Cassie breaks into a house finds a dead body, normally she would be at the cop station answering questions ?, steal a cop car and an auto weapon from last season and nothing happens to her??, it may work on dumb teen shows, but not for thinking adults.

Writing is SO bad
cmorley-465123 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I really like the premise of this show. However, just like OUaT (also on ABC) the writing is trash. Particularly the scene when Travis visits Jenny. She winces when she laughs because of her gunshot. He asks if she's OK; she tells him she was shot and THEN he says yeah I heard about that. Wouldn't that have been the first thing he asked when he saw her, if she is OK?? Then, not even two minutes after she winces from laughing she's crawling all over him and having sex multiple times. Did her injury magically stop hurting?? And don't get me started about the kids finding the car crash and the drugs and money and having a literal mystery man in the bushes - serious Scooby Doo vibes (unpopular opinsion, I do not like Scooby Doo). Plus the previous reviewers mentioning no consequences for Cassie and Rick being alive. I don't know if I'm gonna make it too much further in season two; I can overlook a lot, but this episode was horrible.

Please writers, do something to make Jenny and Cassie more likable...
Thanos_Odinson15 October 2021
From most of the reviews here I gather that many of you don't remember Ronald telling Jenny (or Cassie, don't quite remember) that Rick has a twin brother. Seriously, check that season one finale again. The writers already laid the foundation for season two in last season's finale.

As for Jenny and Cassie being unlikable, I totally agree with the rest of you. I find it difficult, and I mean really difficult to root for them as protagonists. Really, there was a point in season one that I thought Jenny was gonna die and I was glad. I think if your audience can't root for your protagonist/s, than you as a writer have failed miserably. I get that to make a compelling character, you have to give them some negative, or for lack of better words, less appealing traits (like Jon Snow for example; sometimes we want to punch him in the face for some of the dumb choices he makes, but still we root for him when he's charging against Ramsay Bolton, or Boromir, he tried to take the ring from Frodo yet we still feel sad when he's laying there full of arrows saying his last words), otherwise we'll complain about them being too perfect, like Rey Skywalker or Captain Marvel to name a few. But I just can't find those redeeming qualities in Jenny and Cassie. My gawd and don't get me started on those Sullivan sisters.

But I do have hopes for this series, just not high hopes. 5 stars for the series as a whole thanks to Jesse James Keitel who plays Jerrie. This is a compelling character. One far from perfect, but one we can sympathize with.

Wakey, Wakey
bobcobb30126 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
So, they really went the evil twin root? Even soap operas have kind of gotten away from this.

I also wish we actually saw how Ronald got into this situation. Lazy writing to not show us this.

Suspension of belief taken too far
sonjagodbout2 October 2021
Done with this show. Rick has his skull crushed in season one and now he's back? How stupid is that. At least have some sense of reason and don't insult the intelligence of the viewer.

I was hoping the writers listened to a few of these comments...
j_cary8822 October 2021
But I was let down. This show was always extremely unbelievable, which usually doesn't bother me with tv shows. But this one is ridiculous, and almost insults the viewer. The two main characters were the worst parts of season 1, and now it seems like the entire show has caught up to how awful they are by everything just being a collection of awful. Why is the Jenny character overacting SO MUCH?

Honestly this show has been trash ever since the two girls and the guy got rescued. It just feels like a 90 minute movie that got turned into a tv show and they had absolutely nowhere to take the show after the movie ended.

Rick's Alive???
JossIsAGenius2 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was going okay until the end when Rick is suddenly alive after his wife beat him to death in Season 1 Episode 9??? How the heck are they going to explain that one? I may watch next week to see how they can possibly work this ridiculous plot point out. Plus, six weeks for Jenny to completely heal from a gunshot wound with only a few twinges of pain? That doesn't seem possible.
