Exclusive: Saturday Night Live star Ego Nwodim has been tapped as the female lead opposite Adam Pally and Stephen Curry in the single-camera Peacock comedy series Mr. Throwback. Her casting is not expected to impact her duties on the NBC sketch comedy series, which is in the same corporate family.
The Mr. Throwback mocumentary, from Happy Endings creator David Caspe and writing duo Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman, centers on Danny (Happy Endings alum Pally), a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer who looks for redemption by reuniting with his sixth-grade teammate, NBA great Steph Curry.
Nwodim will play Kimberly, Steph’s childhood friend, business partner, manager and essentially his overall handler. Kimberly, Steph, and Danny all grew up together, and while Kimberly is happy to see Danny pop back up in their lives, he’s not about to let Steph get taken advantage of by any of Danny’s schemes.

After starring in the comedy Vacation Friends (which I enjoyed much more than our reviewer did) and its sequel (didn’t watch that one yet) for the Hulu streaming service, Lil Rel Howery has taken the lead in another Hulu Original – but this time they switched up genres. Their new collaboration is the sci-fi horror movie The Mill, which is set to start streaming on October 9th as part of the service’s “Huluween” event. With that release date just over a week away, we’ve gotten our hands on a trailer for The Mill, and you can check it out in the embed above.
Directed by Sean King O’Grady (We Need to Do Something) from a screenplay by Jeffrey David Thomas (All American: Homecoming), The Mill sees Howery playing the role of a white-collar businessman who mysteriously wakes up in an open-air prison cell containing only an old grist mill.

Is there a genre for bizarre films where the plot and climax have no connection to each other? Along with that, the title of the movie had nothing to do with the actual plot of the film. All of this and more peculiar things keep happening in Spin Me Round. A story of a restaurant employee who is sent to an exotic location for training purposes and sets off a chain of events. These occurrences lead her to discover something mysterious about her employers.
Spoilers Ahead
Amber, The Chosen One
The movie begins with a montage of Amber Ruffman, a management-level employee with Tuscan Grove, a chain of Italian cuisine restaurants run by an Italian businessman named Nick Martucci. The montage helps the viewers understand her workflow and her contribution to making the Bakersfield franchise successful and the best Italian restaurant in the area. She comes across as a hardworking woman,...

Editor’s note: this blog originally ran in October of last year. Spin Me Round is now available to stream on Hulu. Special thanks to Jeff Baena and author Kristopher Hewkin.

Filmmaker Jeff Baena has consistently defied expectations over his career, taking audiences on wild rides that often veer from the comedic, to thrilling, to deeply unsettling—often within the same movie. His latest, Spin Me Round, brings his all-star comedy world repertory to Italy for a tale of sun-dappled Tuscan romance gone way, way wrong. For the second film in a row, Baena co-wrote the script with lead Alison Brie, following their first successful writing collaboration on the 2020 psychological thriller Horse Girl.
Brie stars alongside Alessandro Nivola, Molly Shannon, Aubrey Plaza (a two-time Film Independent Spirit Awards host and winner!), Lil Rel Howery, Tim Heidecker and Fred Armisen. The film tells the story of Amber (Brie), a restaurant manager...

Sony Pictures' panel at CinemaCon finally unveiled footage from the studio's next outing into its own villain-centric Spider-Verse. "Kraven the Hunter," the upcoming film that reimagines Spider-Man's enemy as a violent avenger of animals done wrong, will include longtime Marvel Comics antagonist the Rhino. The R-rated film's sneak peek -- which featured Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kraven biting, stabbing, and dismembering poachers and other baddies -- also introduced the Rhino as the main threat. Based on both the voice heard in the trailer and previous interviews, it's extremely apparent and all but officially confirmed that Alessandro Nivola will be playing the character.
The footage explicitly showed an arm turning a gray color as the character presumably transforms into a rhinoceros-like creature. "Don't you want to know why they call me the Rhino?" he asked menacingly in a line of dialogue that viewers have identified as the voice of Nivola, who is...

Mark Duplass and Sterling K. Brown have survived the apocalypse. Now what?
The “Safety Not Guaranteed” star and “This Is Us” alum actor play the two last men on Earth who must adapt and evolve to save humanity in Mel Eslyn’s debut feature “Biosphere.” The film premiered at 2022 TIFF and is executive produced by Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass.
Per the official synopsis, Billy (Duplass) and Ray (Brown) are lifelong best friends, brothers from another mother —they also happen to be the last two men on Earth. Their survival is largely due to Ray, a brilliant scientist who designed the custom biosphere they call home, outfitting it with both creature comforts and the necessities to sustain life on a doomed planet. When the population of their fishpond — which supplies essential protein — begins waning, the men find themselves facing an ominous future. But life may yet find a way…

Last year, as the industry was looking to lift itself out the pandemic’s purgatory at the box office, SXSW lit the wick on A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, which wound up dynamiting the 18-34 hipster moviegoer set in what became the highest-grossing indie film of 2022, the best ever for the New York-based distributor, and now a potential Oscar Best Picture winner.
As such, it’s often been said that SXSW has been a place to launch big studio horror titles and comedies before genre-friendly crowds rather than sell them and discover frosh talent; it’s here where eventual Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton first made a big splash with the Brie Larson drama Short Term 12. Still, that slow rhythm has never deterred sellers from utilizing the Austin festival as place to launch fresh talent directly to a zeitgeist demographic, away from...

Former tennis coaches Joy (Bening) and Stan (Neill) are parents to four adult children. After decades of marriage, they finally have sold their famed tennis academy and are ready to start what should be the golden years of their lives. Alison Brie is looking back on the NBC era of beloved sitcom “Community.”
The “Somebody I Used to Know” writer and star shared that she rewatched “Community” when the Dan Harmon-created series was on Netflix during the Covid-19 lockdown. Emmy-winning “Community” ran from 2009 to 2014 on NBC, with its final season airing on Yahoo! Screen in 2015.
“It holds up,” Brie said during the “We Might Be Drunk” podcast (below). “I recently rewatched some of it because I love to watch my own work. No! It went up on Netflix during Covid, and I just rewatched a bunch of it, and I loved it.”
Brie added, “It’s very edgy too. I think a lot of that writing was toeing the line for a network comedy of, like, getting in some good jabs.”
The “Spin Me Round” actress recalled the “dream” era of airing alongside the Must-See TV NBC comedy lineup at the time.

Finally, single career-focused women get a rom-com to themselves, sans judgment. In the era of Taylor Swift’s “Midnights,” Sza’s “Sos,” and Emily Henry’s novel “Book Lovers,” it’s clear that 2023 is the year of women not apologizing for their relationship statuses, nor being neatly regulated to peppy Band-Aids like Galentine’s Day to soften the blow of the annual lovefest coupledom that is Valentine’s Day. But it’s not St. Valentine’s fault: It’s ours for ignoring self-love as the crux of V-Day.
Thankfully, Alison Brie and Dave Franco have continued the unapologetic, workaholic single woman trend with “Somebody I Used to Know.” Don’t let the trailer nor first act fool you: This is a distinctly empowered subversion on “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and fellow rom-coms that came before it.
“Somebody I Used to Know” begins at what usually is the third act of a standard rom-com.

For me personally, Dave Franco was never an actor that carried such an aura that automatically made a film or series tremendously more interesting entirely due to his presence. That said, his feature directorial debut, The Rental (from 2020), left a good impression, despite the movie itself being far from perfect. On the flip side there's Alison Brie. The actress has also ventured into producing and writing in recent years, and now joins her husband to star in the film Somebody I Used to Know, handling the lead role and sharing a screenplay credit with Franco. // Continue Reading ›...

It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.

Most independent producer/financiers would be glad to have one hot title up for sale in Toronto. Limelight arrives this week with three: the Jane Fonda/Lily Tomlin-led comedy-drama “Moving On,” plus a pair of distinctive coming-of-age dramas, “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” and “Wildflower.”
Now Limelight is developing the script for a comedy tentatively titled “Coachella,” written by Andy Siara (“Palm Springs”) and Joey Siara. The feature centers on teens who tell their parents they’re going on a church trip, but sneak off to the famed desert music festival instead. The Siara brothers are loosely drawing on their experiences playing the fest with their indie rock band, The Henry Clay People.
By any measure, Limelight partners Dylan Sellers, Chris Parker and Alex Dong are on a roll. Their comedy “Palm Springs” sold to Neon and Hulu for around 22 million in 2020, a record-breaking Sundance deal at the time.

Alessandro Nivola has always been an actor’s actor, but in the last handful of years, audiences are catching up to the fact that he’s one of the most versatile performers in town. From an Orthodox rabbi in Sebastian Lelio’s Disobedience to Tony Soprano’s tragic mentor in The Many Saints of Newark, Nivola has that unique ability to disappear into his characters. The Boston native is currently starring alongside Alison Brie and Aubrey Plaza in Jeff Baena’s Spin Me Round, which subverts the romantic comedy genre in a welcomed way. Nivola is mostly known for drama, but he’s grateful for Riley Stearns’ indie black comedy The Art of Self-Defense (2019), as it’s created more and more of these comedic opportunities for him.

Debby Ryan is putting her celebrity lookalike conspiracy theory to rest. The former Disney Channel star finally addressed the popular fan theory that she and Chase Stokes are the same person during a red carpet event for her new movie, Spin Me Round. And she even has the receipts to prove it, sharing the pair have been in the same room together "at least one time." "I went to eat at a Brazilian steakhouse in University City with some of my family members," Debby told E! News' The Rundown. "And years later Chase Stokes told me that he was our server and that we interacted." The conspiracy first emerged on TikTok in 2020 when the series Outer...

Aubrey Plaza has joined the cast of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis, making the production even more mega.
Aubrey Plaza joins a Megalopolis cast that also includes Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, Jon Voight, and more. At one point, Oscar Isaac, Cate Blanchett, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Zendaya were attached. Reportedly, the late James Caan was also considered at one point. Caan, who played Sonny Corleone in Coppola’s The Godfather, passed away in July.
The plot synopsis: “The fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its own social problems in this epic story of political ambition, genius and conflicted love.”
Filming on Megalopolis–the 83-year-old Coppola’s much-anticipated passion project–will begin this year and extend into March 2023. No release date has been set.

In a strategic move by Universal, “Jurassic World: Dominion” (19.99) kept “Elvis” (Wbd/19.99) from two clear weeks at the top of VOD charts. Next week, all other game plans will be moot: “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount/19.99) comes to PVOD rental platforms Tuesday and will undoubtedly dominate for the foreseeable future.
Meantime, Netflix viewers continue to confound their overlords by preferring to watch the streamers’ less high-profile original films rather than the more expensive star-branded ones. “Look Both Ways” with “Riverdale” star Lili Reinhart as a college senior thinking through alternatives for her future knocked off Jamie Foxx’s “Day Shift” (now #3).
“Jurassic” will come to Peacock on September 2, with both the release version and one with extended scenes. The studio released the latter to PVOD this week. It was treated differently by different platforms — Google Play lists the two separately (at #2 and #3), while Vudu and iTunes combined revenues, landing it at #1 at the former,...

When the manager of an American chain restaurant is selected to attend a special training program in Italy, her head swims with dreams of European glamour and romance. But the trip turns out to be much different — and possibly more dangerous — than the exotic getaways she imagines.
There’s a carefree, happy-go-lucky feeling from Jeff Baena‘s Spin Me Round that will make you be in a good mood almost instantly. It’s just a shame that his film is never able to keep that momentum up, with a second act that while entertaining, feels full of filler and a third act that feels far too abrupt.

Nearly two years after it was prematurely canceled, star Alison Brie has called Glow’s Netflix axing the “great heartbreak” of her acting career.
While promoting her latest movie, Spin Me Round (read our review here!), Brie reflected on G.L.O.W. with a sigh:
It’s the great heartbreak of my career. But it will forever live on as, like, this great thing. I loved working on it – maybe more than anything I’ve worked on! – and I miss it a lot. But I feel very grateful for the time I had on the show.”
Glow was officially canceled in October 2020 while the fourth season was on hiatus, having paused in March when the Covid-19 pandemic struck. Reportedly, the entire first episode had already wrapped. Netflix, who has recently become notorious for sending beloved shows to the great streaming service in the sky, cited the difficulties of shooting during the shutdown.

It’s clear that Glow still has a tight hold on Alison Brie.
The actress spoke with Decider for an interview published Friday to promote her new film Spin Me Round, and she was asked about the surprising turn of events surrounding the end of her Netflix series Glow. [Editor’s note: The following story contains some spoilers for “Spin Me Round.”]
It’s difficult to dispute Aubrey Plaza’s versatility. From embarking on a credit card-swiping crime spree in “Emily the Criminal” to just maybe being the new Lara Croft in a “Tomb Raider” reboot and even taking apart the very concept of acting in “Black Bear,” Plaza has gone out of her way to deconstruct any attempts at typecasting her.
So when “Spin Me Round,” the fourth collaboration with longtime creative partner and husband Jeff Baena, placed Plaza back in Italy after “The Little Hours” and upcoming Sicily-set Season 2 of “The White Lotus,” it was clear no one knew what to expect of her character. And boy, does Plaza keep us on our toes in the dark comedy that simultaneously subverts rom-com expectations and tells an all-to-true #MeToo story enhanced by a subtly slimy flavor that infects what should be a lush Tuscan getaway.

Review: Spin Me Round is Jeff Baena‘s latest outing in the world of off-beat comedy and he’s brought many of his usual collaborators along for the ride. So is it just as weird and off-kilter as the rest of his filmography? What starts as a standard romantic comedy slowly devolves into a weird mystery. With no major movies on the horizon, the summer slowdown has continued at the box office. Universal’s action movie “Beast,” starring Idris Elba,” picked up just 925,000 in Thursday previews after launching in 2,900 theaters. It will expand to 3,743 locations on Friday.
The survival thriller is expected to bring in 10 million in its opening weekend, and the film cost 36 million to produce, not to mention more to promote. Internationally, “Beast” has already earned 4.9 million.
Elba plays a father who travels to South Africa with his two daughters, and while in the savannah he faces the titular predator in “Beast” — a rogue, ferocious lion. The cast includes Sharlto Copley, Iyana Halley and Leah Jeffries.

Elba plays a father who travels to South Africa with his two daughters, and while in the savannah he faces the titular predator in “Beast” — a rogue, ferocious lion. The cast includes Sharlto Copley, Iyana Halley and Leah Jeffries.

“Spin Me Round” stars Ayden Mayeri and Debby Ryan got along so well while filming the new indie comedy “Spin Me Round” in Tuscany that they ended up getting matching tattoos after production wrapped.
“We all became great friends in Italy,” Mayeri told Variety at the movie’s premiere on Wednesday in Los Angeles. “So while we were shooting, Debby and I thought it would be a great idea to get a tattoo in honor of the movie. The rest of the cast was like ‘absolutely not!’ So when we returned home, Debby and I were determined to show our commitment to each other. So we drew up a design with tattoo artist and friend Colin Rigsby!”
The tattoo is a black ink inscription on their legs that says “Frizzante,” which means “sparkling” in Italian. Mayeri, who’s red carpet dress at the premiere was bought at a flea market outside their Tuscany hotel,...

Following The Little Hours, Horse Girl and Joshy, Jeff Baena and Alison Brie are back for their fourth indie collaboration — and second (after Horse Girl) as co-writers.
Spin Me Round, which Baena also directs and produces while Brie stars and produces, follows a woman who wins an all-expenses-paid trip to Italy through the Italian restaurant where she works, setting up an adventure after she meets the restaurant chain’s wealthy owner.
“After we made our film Horse Girl together, Jeff came to me and said, ‘I read an article about an exemplary managers program that is run out of an Italian chain restaurant in the States,’ and the article sort of outlined how lackluster that program was; how there were big promises of full immersion in Italian culture but actually it was just like a lot of American managers from restaurants hanging out,...

Just when it seems every production under the sun seems to be jetting off to Italy, “Spin Me Round” writer-director Jeff Baena looked for another angle: to dismantle the fantasy facade of the romanticized nation, and then, well, spin it. Baena’s “Spin Me Round,” which he co-wrote with lead star and frequent collaborator Alison Brie is part coming-of-age story and part slap in the face of the “expectation versus reality” memes, all wrapped up in a #MeToo mystery.
In the film, which debuted at SXSW in March and is being released this week, Brie plays Amber, a manager at fast food restaurant Tuscan Grove, an Olive Garden insert, who wins a corporate retreat to Italy. While her fellow top-earning managers are also attending the company seminars, Amber only has eyes for franchise founder Nick Martucci (Alessandro Nivola).
Yet Nick’s assistant Kat (Aubrey Plaza) seems to be letting Amber...

Alison Brie and Dave Franco are one of those rare Hollywood couples that seem to just work. Brie says one reason for their close connection apparently stems from them working hard to keep in touch, despite their schedules.
Brie and Franco walked the red carpet at a special IFC screening of her new film, “Spin Me Round”, at The London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills, and the celebrated actress spoke with Et’s Cassie Dilaura about her happy marriage of five years — as well as their upcoming project.
Brie is starring in the forthcoming romantic dramedy “Somebody I Used to Know”, which Franco is directing and was co-written by the couple.
“To me the best part is getting to experience all these other people on set realizing how incredible he is,” Brie said of getting to work with her husband on a film. “I already know, [but] its really fun to...

Reflecting upon a film like Spin Me Round, it helps to keep Roger Ebert’s classic quote in mind: “It’s not what a movie is about, it’s how it is about it.” The new film from director Jeff Baena is, on its Euro-sheen surface, a romantic comedy about Amber (Alison Brie), an unambitious thirtysomething manager at a…...

After one of the worst weekends at the box office since February, many have been ready to give up on the summer of 2022, but never fear. There’s still a few hopes that things will pick up before Labor Day — but not that much hope, really. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
On Friday, Universal releases “Beast,” a killer lion thriller starring Idris Elba and Sharlto Copley that’s directed by Icelandic filmmaker Baltasar Kormákur (“Everest”). In the movie, Elba plays the father of two teen daughters who all go on an African safari only to encounter the beast of the title, a rogue lion with deadly intentions.
It seems like a great high-concept creature thriller ala 2019’s “Crawl,” which opened with 12 million in July and actually held up well due to word-of-mouth. It’s hard to tell whether Elba’s considerable star power might be in play,...

“Beast,” a survival thriller starring Idris Elba, is expected to debut to 10 million over the weekend. But those ticket sales likely won’t be enough to lead domestic box office charts.
Instead, the Universal Pictures release looks to be defeated by “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero,” a manga adaptation from Crunchyroll, a company that specializes in Japanese anime movies and television. The PG-13 “Super Hero” is targeting 13 million to 15 million in its opening weekend as it touches down in 3,900 North American theaters. It marks the widest release ever for Crunchyroll.
Anime films have been increasingly popular in the United States, and Crunchyroll, which is mostly owned by Sony Pictures, has been at the forefront. Earlier this year, the studio’s PG-13 “Jujutsu Kaisen 0” notched a remarkable 17.6 million in its debut, while the company’s 2021 release “Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train” nabbed 21.2 million to start, a huge result at...
