Season Two Review
My thoughts on the first season of "Batwoman" were that it was a standard Berlanti-verse show, let down somewhat by it's lead actress not being very good. I hoped that the second season would improve, given Ruby Rose's departure, but hamstrung by a story forced to stick with pre-existing characters I felt this season was worse.
Kate Kane is missing, with her plane shot down things look bleak, but her body has not been recovered. Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie) steps into the batsuit when she recovers it from the crash site planning to use it to avenge her foster mothers' death at the hands of Alice (Rachel Skarsten). Though that plan fails, Wilder does thwart the escape of Tommy Elliot, which is enough to earn her at least a temporary spell as Kate's replacement.
I mean, the problem with this season is that the show is tied into a character that isn't there anymore. Kate Kane's whole family make up many of the supporting characters and the principle villainess. Weaving a new character into that and having it make sense does feel forced. Particularly as there's so much else going on, the diversions to Safiyah's island, the introduction of Black Mask as the season run on, the reveal about what happened to Kate. There's so much, but it all somehow still feels inconsequential.
I have to admit, after a few weeks I let "Batwoman" stack up on the planner, and then decided that I honestly couldn't face sitting through all of them, so I deleted four episodes for the last five episodes and just watched the finale. It was telling that I didn't struggle to follow what was happening, despite not watching around 20% of the season.
Again, I'll probably watch the next season, because a lot of the teases suggest steps towards things I might like. The Kane's family appear to be mostly departing and the arrival of Bridget Regan as Poison Ivy might make for a more interesting big bad. We'll see... but honestly, I don't think I can give this series too many more chances.
