- Bones returns from Guatemala as Booth is finally cleared for duty; Booth is anxious to prove he's fully recovered, even accepting help from Angela's psychic. Things take an interesting turn when the psychic informs them that there is a mass grave underneath a fountain.
- A DC fountain leads to the discovery of several skeletons buried under it. They belong to missing members of charismatic crook Tom Fargood's latest and last-ever project, for sufferers of a rare disease, MCS, which drives desperate enough to be easy victims. One of them is the sister of 'clairvoyant' Avalon Harmonia, whose predictions just seem to good to be true.—KGF Vissers
- Angela (Michaela Conlin), Bones (Emily Deschanel) and Avalon (Cyndi Lauper), a psychic, sit in a pretty park and attempt to see into the future. Naturally, the first Tarot card turned over is "Temperance" -- our favorite doctor's first name. A coincidence? "Yes, a 1 in 78 chance," says a typically skeptical Bones. The next cards reveal a man in her life with "the heart of a lion." Speaking of, Booth (David Boreanaz) is being examined by Sweets (John Francis Daley). "Its been six weeks since they put my brain box through the blender," says Booth, referring to last season's surgery. "I'm back, baby!" Sweets isn't convinced -- especially after he hears Booth and Bones haven't spoken in some time. Does Booth miss anything about his dream life from a year ago? "The clothes," he quips. Hmm. Maybe he IS back. The psychic, meanwhile, turns over the death card after Bones leaves the table. Apparently, her life is "at a turning point."
Cut to the lab, where Bones gets a huge hug from Jack (T.J. Thyne) -- and then from Booth, who explains he has been reinstated for duty. Booth claims to be "110 percent." Bones, naturally, informs him it's impossible to better than 100 percent. Angela then enters with pseudo news: Her psychic said multiple bodies are buried beneath a fountain in the park. On a lark, B&B decide to check it out. Lo and behold, the psychic was right! So is she also correct that Bones and Booth are inextricably linked? But there's no time for frustrated romance now. We have ourselves a murder to solve. Some hours later, the bodies have been dug up and the team examines the remains. "This is actual evidence, Angela," says Bones. "Not some mumbo-jumbo from a deck of Tarot cards." Who are you trying to convince, Bones?
Booth and Camille (Tamara Taylor), in the meantime, are grabbing a drink at the local watering hole. The former tells the latter how his dream life last season was SO real. Camille can guess why. "You're in love with Dr. Brennan," she says. "My advice for what's it's worth: Forget your bruised brain and go with your lion heart." In other words, confess his feelings to his partner. HOWEVER, Booth better be sure -- because if he breaks Bones' heart, she might never trust anyone again. He drinks to that. Montage time! We listen to soul-searching guitar music while Bones investigates the crime scene and Booth puts on funny socks while contemplating his feelings. The montage ends when Booth confronts Bones in the hole of bodies. "I have something for you to do," she says, handing him a disc found among the corpses. Booth opens his mouth to confess his love, hesitates, and then chickens out entirely. He rushes out of the hole leaving poor Bones confused among the bodies.
Back at the office, Booth and Sweets consider the psychic: Could she somehow be involved? Interestingly, Sweets indicates he might believe in psychics. Booth isn't so sure. Jack calls: Fabric found at the murder site was designed for submarine crews. Then Bones calls: No signs of violence except for one single skull, which has a coin-sized hole in it. It's not a bullet hole, though. Later, Angela reveals she has found a picture of a license plate on the disc. "I figure you have 12 bodies and this vehicle holds between 12 and 15," she says. "Now comes the awkward part." A computerized facial reconstruction of the first fountain skull reveals a face clearly resembling Avalon. So B&B drag the so-called-psychic in for questioning, showing her the reconstruction. "Oh no," she cries. "It's my sister!" Angela, in the meantime, has traced the car in the photo back to the Harbingers of a New Day, a cult supposedly building an underwater society. The leader, Tom Fargood, is seen in a 10-year-old, grainy video preaching to his flock. Among that flock: Avalon and her now dead sister. Jack comments the two appeared to be "pretty close." Quips Camille: "Her sister ended up in a mass grave that she led us to. I'm not sure that adds up to 'pretty close.' " Point taken, boss.
The next day, Avalon is back in the hot seat. She explains, yes, she was once a member of the Harbinger Group. Sis, it turns out, was allergic to just about everything -- like most members of the cult. "You did something that got you expelled, didn't you?" Sweets asked. Turns out Avalon went to a doctor for her headaches -- one not approved by Tom Fargood. "There never was an underwater facility, was there?" Avalon cries. "He just killed them for their money!" Maybe. Maybe not. Cut to a crowded hospital, where B&B question Dr. Charles Leacock. Leacock says he was once approached by Fargood to be the physician in the Harbingers' aquatic utopia, but turned the offer down -- and was consequently excommunicated. Bones requests the groups' medical information. "If they have MCS, it should show up pretty obviously in their bones," she says, referring to Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. The doctor is nice, but explains he'll need a warrant.
Back at the office, Sweets shows Booth three scans of his brain: one pre-coma, one during and one afterwards. The head doc explains the latter two show the same activity, indicating an artificial increase in romantic and sexual feelings. Conclusion: "Your feelings are not real and will fade away like any other symptom," Sweets explains. In other words, Bones might not be in love with Bones, after all. That complicates matters. Jack, in the meantime, has figured out how 11 of the 12 bodies died. Turns out they were given low doses of antifreeze until it killed them (no. 12 hole in the skull dude was likely killed with a spear gun). Camille and Angela are impressed. "That is why they call me 'King in the Lab.' " Angela explains only Jack calls Jack that.
We cut to Booth, who is keeping an eye on suspect Avalon. The psychic pulls out her deck of cards and begins dealing. The first card is the Devil. This apparently means Bones is in mortal danger. "You better go to her now," Avalon says. "Go right now!" Booth is skeptical. Could Avalon just be trying to shake off her police escort? Maybe -- but worry gets the best of him. He rushes off to save Bones from ... whatever. Bones, meanwhile, has gone back to the hospital to talk to Dr. Leacock about the antifreeze developments. It's possible the victims didn't have MCS, but were just severly weakened by the low, but ultimately deadly doses of the automobile product. The hospital is dark. Hallways are deserted. The doc beckons from another room, telling Bones to "lock the door behind you." In other words, the psychic is beginning to look downright, well, psychic. Sure enough, bad doc tries to sneak up on our heroine with a scalpel. Bones dodges and weaves until Booth BURSTS through the door with gun drawn. He takes aim and BAM! The doctor falls, dead.
Later, a shaken Bones goes over to Avalon's apartment. Amazingly, she is STIILL skeptical about the psychics ability. She draws a card. "The answer to the question that you're afraid to say out loud is, 'Yes, he knows the truth of you and he is dazzled by that truth.' " Bones positively swoons -- or comes as close as she possibly can. Back at the office, Sweets and Angela search for Fargood. Could he have changed his name? Angela suggests looking at retirement communities, where a former cult leader might be searching for new victims. BAM! A familiar face emerges. Alexander Gallo is selling shares in retirement communities. He also looks suspiciously like Tom Fargood. Moments later, B&B question this Mr. Gallo, who denies any knowledge of the Harbinger cult. "I want a lawyer," Gallo says. Good call, dude.
Unfortunately, the team doesn't really have enough to hold the suspected killer. "That man poisoned 11 people and used a spear gun to kill the 12th," Bones argues. Caroline (Patricia Belcher) agrees to hold Gallo for 24 hours -- but that's it. The clock is ticking. So B&B bring in Avalon. She takes one look at Gallo and scratches his face. "You killed my little sister!" she screams. The scratch wasn't all that accidental, though. They immediately wrap Avalon's hand in plastic to see if the DNA from Avalon's fingernails match Fargood's DNA sample. It does. But as Caroline points out, "You proved that Gallo is Fargood, but now you have to prove that Fargood killed those people."
Could Fargood be getting away with mass murder? There's no time for justice now, however. Booth and Bones walk down the street when the former stops the latter. "Ever since I woke up from my coma, I wanted to say something to you," Booth says. Just then, a clown approaches and Booth starts cracking up. Bones is confused. "Booth, you hate clowns!" she says. "I'm sure in a few weeks you'll hate clowns again ... What did you want to tell me?" Booth hesitates, wondering if his brain still isn't quite right. "I love you," he says. "In a professional and at-a-girl, kind of way." Bones was clearly hoping for a different kind of love, but covers her true feelings (just like her partner). "Back at you!" she says. It's awkward.
Suddenly, Caroline pulls up. She suggests charging Fargood with grand theft auto (the rental van) and fraud (selling people a life underwater when the facility never existed). "What does this add up to?" Bones says. About 100 years in prison. So it's not perfect, but it will have to do. Bones apologizes to Avalon for not pinning her sister's murder on the man. "Sometimes you just have to settle for the second-best situation," Avalon says. She then looks at Booth and Bones. "By the way, my cards tell me that this all works out eventually."
