Pinewood Toronto Studios has promoted general counsel Sarah Farrell to become the new general manager of the city’s downtown mega-studio.
Farrell, who joined film studio as legal counsel in 2013, had been overseeing legal, Hr and client relations. She replaces Geoff Grant, who left Pinewood Toronto Studios as general manager in Sept. 2023. That followed Pinewood Group, which runs Pinewood Studios in the U.K., in May 2023 acquiring full ownership of Pinewood Toronto Studios.
“Sarah is a great asset to the Pinewood Group and we are delighted that she has taken the reins as general manager. She is an extremely experienced and knowledgeable professional who understands Pinewood Toronto and the wider film and TV industry well,” David Conway, Pinewood Group CEO, said in a statement.

Have you noticed that a lot of science-fiction movies haven't felt so fictional of late? Oh sure, the genre has always been about our real-world problems in the present day. Yet, as technology has caught up to our collective imaginations, a lot of would-be fantastical representations of the future have come to resemble our current hellscape but either slightly shinier and/or dingier and with A.I. that's capable of more than cranking out fake YouTube film trailer screencaps of men standing behind nude women. Even movies set thousands of years from now on distant planets tend to be about the all-too-topical concern of young white twinks embracing fascism (much to the dismay of their progressive girlfriends).
As dour and sometimes surreal as these movies are, they're also excellent vehicles for filmmakers to talk about the biggest issues of the day and, in doing so, perhaps make them feel just...

Stranger Things breakout Millie Bobby Brown is driving a sword through Netflix’s English Films List this week with her fantasy action flick Damsel, slaying the number one spot for the second week in a row! The Juan Carlos Fresnadillo-directed action-adventure film added 50.8M views to its coffers and was the most-watched title of the week. Damsel’s viewing total stands tall at 86.1M views in ten days, hitting the coveted #1 spot in 87 countries and reaching the Top 10 in 93.
Meanwhile, Lindsay Lohan’s romantic comedy Irish Wish pranced into the #2 slot, with 30.6M views in its first three days of release. The action-thriller Code 8: Part II nabbed the #4 spot (3.6M views), while Johan Renck’s Spaceman, starring Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan, floated into the #9 spot with 3.1M views. Spaceman’s performance is shocking, as Sandler typically owns the Netflix Top 10 whenever he drops a new film onto the streamer.

Avatar: The Last Airbender strikes again.
The live-action Netflix series was once again on top of the TV list from February 26 to March 3 with 19.9M views in its first full week on the platform. That’s slightly down from last week, but still by far the most-watched series on the platform during this interval.
Avatar still has a bit of a long way to go before it would break into Netflix’s most popular TV list. So far, it’s racked up about 40M of the 83M views it would need to surpass The Witcher Season 1, which is currently sitting in 10th place. There is plenty of time to make that happen, though, since the series has a hefty 91-day premiere window to do so.
The top three series were the same as the previous week, though Love Is Blind and One Day swapped places. Season 6 of the reality dating...

So far, 2024 has seen everything from a cult favorite sci-fi comedy to a forgotten Alexander Skarsgård and Margot Robbie film hitting the Netflix Top 10 charts. Frankly, it was nice to see something other than Kevin Hart's "Lift" in the charts, as this most recent effort from the standup star seems to be the latest in an endless supply of middling streaming movies that somehow come to dominate Netflix's most-watched rankings. Thankfully, Hart has now departed the charts to make way for more popular films and TV on Netflix, and this month there's a particular Canadian franchise that's managed to capture viewers' attention.
"Code 8" started life as a 2016 short film that essentially served as a trailer for a larger crowd-funded project. That project finally arrived in 2019 in the form of a feature-length "Code 8" movie, a science fiction actioner written and directed by Jeff Chan. The film stars...

It’s unsurprising that Adam Sandler’s “Spaceman” is an immediate #1 for Netflix, but you have to wonder if the Sandler audience knew what it was getting: It’s the story of a long-distance solo astronaut who encounters loneliness and a mutant spider on his journey to Venus. Directed by Johan Renck, who won a DGA Award for his direction of HBO miniseries “Chernobyl,” it premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Reviews are mediocre and, per Netflix practice, it had token one-week showings in limited theaters. “Spaceman: debuted on the streamer March 1 and it will be interesting to see what kind of hold it maintains. For now, it’s another example of how Sandler uses his Netflix deal to expand his scope. (The film was produced by Channing Tatum’s Free Association.)
The film costars Carey Mulligan, currently a Best Actress Oscar nominee for another Netflix original, “Maestro.

Code 8: Part II, directed by Jeff Chan, delves into the current state of corruption in Lincoln City. It portrays a corrupt police sergeant named Kingston who masquerades as a do-gooder, serving the community’s interests while secretly collaborating with Psyke drug producer Garrett and his cohorts to make extra money on the side. The storyline highlights how individuals with mutant powers seeking employment in the manufacturing sector face discrimination from the Lincoln City Police Department’s (Lcpd) new robotic officers known as Guardians. These Guardians are deployed to combat powered criminals, but their automated lethality escalates beyond control. In response, the police consider reducing the number of Guardians and integrating non-lethal robotic dogs to maintain order. Kingston happens to be the producer of these robotic dogs. The exploration of Kingston’s character’s evil deeds and abuse of power serves as a central theme in the movie, shedding light...

The spinoff of Suits in the works at NBC has found its lead actor.
Stephen Amell will star in Suits: LA, a companion series to the former USA Network legal drama turned streaming phenomenon. Should it go to series, the project would mark Amell’s return to the broadcast world, where he played the title character in The CW’s Arrow for eight seasons.
Universal Studio Group’s UCP began developing a Suits spinoff with creator Aaron Korsh in October, following the show’s massive streaming success after it was added to Netflix in June 2023 (the show also streams on Peacock). NBC ordered a pilot for Suits: LA on Feb. 1 and is aiming to begin production in Vancouver in late March — which could put the show in contention for a spot in the network’s 2024-25 lineup.

Back when the Covid-19 pandemic ruled the world in April 2020, “Code 8” dropped on Netflix to rave reviews. Netflix is ramping up its investment north of the border.
The streamer is increasing its spending to help bolster women working in animation in the country as it actively searches for an executive to lead its originals – in effect introducing local greenlight power for original commissions.
This comes as Netflix, which entered Canada ten years and has spent around $2.5B on Canadian content since 2017, unveiled plans earlier this year to open a local office.
“Canada’s a great place to produce,” co-ceo and Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said during his Banff World Media Festival keynote. “We want to be even more aggressive about telling even more Canadian stories. We’re opening an office in Toronto and we’re actively in the process of hiring a manager for original Canadian series, which will in effect move the greenlight for Canadian content to Canada.”
He said that he was looking for...
