If I've struggled a bit with some of the more recent output from Greg Berlanti's DC universe, one show I've never struggled with was "Titans". More grown up than its stable mates, the series has delved into DC lore quite a bit, using Deathstroke, Doom Patrol and Cadmus. Season three adapts a classic Batman storyline, though adds some interesting changes into the mix.
Haunted by his failures against Deathstroke, Jason Todd (Curran Walters) sees the opportunity for redemption by capturing the Joker against Bruce Wayne's (Iain Glen) orders. The Joker though gets the upper hand and beats Todd to death. Dick Grayson (Brenton Thwaites) and the rest of the Titans head to Gotham just in time to face off with a new villain, The Red Hood, who appears to know their secrets very well. Looking for an insight into this villain, Grayson pays a visit to an old advisory Jonathan Crane (Vincent Kartheiser).
So, yes it's not much of a spoiler if you know but they are adapting the "Death in the Family" storyline for this season, with the added injection of Jonathan Crane played with relish by Vincent Kartheiser. It's a fun performance, starting off as a reasonable man just looking for some good weed but eventually descending into a pit of madness and violence. This series also gives us Barbara Gordon, played by Savannah Welch as well as a third incarnation of Robin, Tim Drake, played by Jay Lycurgo.
I would say, that though I enjoyed it quite a bit and the musical choices are amazing, some of the storyline is a little familiar to the last season. You'd have thought Dick might have learned a lesson about not lying to the team, but apparently not. Some of the character decisions across the season were a little . . . Confused and, as ever, once you introduce the concept of the Lazarus pit it's a crutch to get you out of any storyline hole you might want.
It's still the best show in the Berlanti-verse though and hopefully with a little more coming together as a team, season four might be the best yet.
