Bill Hader or, at least, an animated character that he voices, will don a red-and-white striped top hat in a new adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ “The Cat in the Hat.”
The “Barry” star will lead a vocal ensemble that also includes Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Bowen Yang (“SNL”), Xochitl Gomez (“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”), Matt Berry (“What We Do in The Shadows”) and Paula Pell (“Girls5eva”). Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Dr. Seuss Enterprises officially announced the casting on Monday.
“The Cat in the Hat” will open in theaters on March 6, 2026. Although the book is a children’s classic, it has a checkered cinematic legacy. A 2003 live-action adaptation, starring Mike Myers as he was riding high off of “Austin Powers,” collapsed at the box office. It earned $134 million on a $109 million budget and became a money-loser when marketing and distribution costs were factored into the equation. It...

Adapting Dr. Seuss's books into movies is challenging but lucrative, with varying degrees of success and box office profits. Some Seuss adaptations, like The Cat in the Hat, strayed from the original tone, resulting in critical and box office failures. Horton Hears a Who! was a faithful and successful adaptation, capturing the whimsical essence of the beloved Dr. Seuss book.
Dr. Seuss movies have proven that bringing the imaginative world of the author to life is not always easy. Born Theodore Seuss Geisel in 1904, the author who would eventually assume the pen name Dr. Seuss became a beloved icon for his ingenious works of children's fiction. Though his books have graced the small screen since the 1960s, it took decades for his first feature film adaptation to materialize. Movies based on Seuss's works have been smash hits at the box office, and though they range in quality, they all...

Illumination and Nintendo will join forces to produce a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.
The companies previously partnered on last year’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed more than $1.3 billion and became the second highest-grossing movie of 2023. It’s unclear which fanciful characters the new film will focus on — be they plumbers, princesses, Koopas or other residents of the Mushroom Kingdom — and the partners are not using the word “sequel.” However, the companies did specify that the movie will be released in theaters on April 3, 2026, in the U.S. and additional markets globally. It will be unveiled in other territories throughout April.

Swift's acting background and diverse music videos make her a fitting candidate for roles in various book adaptations. Potential roles could include playing Verity in a Verity adaptation, a vampire in a Twilight reboot, or a Disney princess in Penelope. Swift could excel in voice acting roles such as Sychorax in The Wizards of Once or a cameo in The Invisible Life of Addie Larue.
Die-hard Swifties will always be eager to see Taylor Swift star (or cameo) in movie and TV show adaptations of their favorite novels. Swift's music demonstrates literary influence, and the album title Tortured Poets Department is enough to suggest that she is invested in more than one book and poetry collection. All hail the minions! The little yellow sidekicks that went from comic relief to global superstars over the course of the decade. But where did they come from? The journey started thanks to a new studio animation department. Illumination Entertainment was founded by former Fox/Blue Sky executive Chris Meledandri after being lured away by Universal Studios. In addition to the Minions movies, Illumination is responsible for The Lorax, franchises Sing and The Secret Life of Pets, and the box office juggernaut The Super Mario Bros Movie. But the minions have always been the stars of Illumination, even making it into the company's logo before the other movies. What is it about the pint-sized, nonsense-speaking, overall-clad heroes that makes them so addictive?...

It's been 14 years since Illumination entered the movie scene with "Despicable Me," and in that time, the film series has become the highest-grossing animated franchise ever. It has done so on the back of catchy tunes, memorable characters, a fun story of a villain accidentally (and reluctantly) finding redemption, and also the cultural phenomenon that is the Minions.
After the second movie in the franchise, we've also seen a new spin-off movie in between each new "Despicable Me" film that's centered on the Minions and their adventures before they met their best friend and overlord Gru. Now, after a seven-year absence, Gru is finally back -- and this time, he encounters an even greater challenge than when he tried to steal the moon. Now, he's a father.
That's right, following the monumental success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Illumination is taking the "Shrek" route with Gru and the Minions by giving Gru a family.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Shift: Joe Drake Stepping Down As Chair, Hands Reins To Adam Fogelson
Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake is exiting the company, and handing over executive duties and title to Motion Picture Group Vice Chair Adam Fogelson.
This was a move initiated by Drake who’ll be working with Fogelson over the coming months to transition him to the Chair role.
The corporate segue follows Lionsgate’s reboot of the Hunger Games franchise with the Q4 holiday prequel, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which has grossed over $340M global box office to date.

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.

Some of Zac Efron's most notable work has been in musicals, with High School Musical being his breakout role. Some of Efron's musicals have been more successful and memorable than others. Hairspray is Efron's best movie musical, capturing the magic of the Broadway show through polished performances and impeccable casting.
Zac Efron has starred in six quality movie musicals, but some are better than others for many reasons. Efron's breakout acting role was playing Troy Bolton in Disney Channel's unexpected hit movie, High School Musical (2006). He went on to have a successful career as an actor, starring in comedies like 17 Again, That Awkward Moment, Dirty Grandpa, and the Neighbors movies, as well as dramas like The Lucky One, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, and the Von Erich family biopic The Iron Claw.

Warner Bros. Discovery will open Legendary’s “Dune: Part Two” not on March 15, 2024, but on March 1, 2024. That takes the place of Universal’s “The Fall Guy,” as the Ryan Gosling/Emily Blunt action comedy recently moved to May 3, thus making it the unofficial summer kick-off film for 2024. Now the Timothée Chalamet/Zendaya sci-fi fantasy, which was initially set to debut Nov. 3 of this year, is the unofficial Spring season kick-off flick instead.

Illumination has become one of the leading animation studios in the industry, with successful franchises like Despicable Me and Minions. While some of their projects have been disappointing, such as Hop and The Grinch, others like The Lorax and Sing have resonated with audiences. The studio's biggest success and one of its best films is The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which pleased fans of the video game franchise and showcased impressive animation.

"The Lorax" is a popular animated film based on Dr. Seuss's children's book, with a pro-environmental message that resonates with both young audiences and adults. The film faced controversy for contradicting its environmental themes by featuring tie-in ads for companies, but despite the backlash, it was a box-office success and well-received. "The Lorax" is currently available for streaming on Peacock, offering a family-friendly experience that can teach and inspire young children to protect the Earth. It can also be rented or purchased on other platforms at affordable prices.
Where can families watch The Lorax, the 2012 Universal Pictures animated film? Based on Dr. Seuss's iconic children's book of the same name? The Lorax is about a young boy named Ted Wiggins (Zac Efron) who leaves the city of Thneedville to speak with the Once-ler (Ed Helms) as he wants to find a tree and give it to Audrey (Taylor Swift), his crush.

We are keeping this poll strictly to her narrative movies and not any of her music related content so you will have to decide if her lovelorn cheerleader from Valentines Day was your favorite or her more adult turn in David O’Russel’s Amsterdam is more your cup of tea.

Right now, Taylor Swift is the biggest thing in the music world. Some people may not like that, but the fact is that she is crushing it, with her concerts changing local economies and causing actual seismic disturbances. Put her name on a product, and you’re almost guaranteed that people will find and buy it.
So the question is, is there anything she can’t do? The answer may revolve around movie choices. The reigning queen of Spotify may blow audiences away at live venues, but her acting isn’t bringing in the accolades. But is it that she can’t act or that she can’t choose the right roles?

The perfect voice can enhance the essence of a film. Voice actors can execute believable performances to bring characters of all creeds to life. Some performances can be unsettling and chilling, and others are upbeat and witty. But not every actor's voice is perfectly matched with their character.
Sometimes this is done intentionally for comedic purposes. Larry King's voice for the Ugly Stepsister in Shrek 2 is so ill-fitting that it's pure comedy gold. Moreover, familiar voices like Eddie Murphy as Mushu in Mulan become iconic for how misplaced they are. But other voices, such as Matthew Broderick's in The Tale of Despereaux completely juxtapose their onscreen character's designs. Not all of these pairings are atrocious, but those that stand out the most can completely take audiences out of a movie's fictional universe.

Exclusive: Paramount Animation and Temple Hill have a new original animated movie in the works, Superworld, based on the book series of the same name, created and illustrated by Yarrow and Carrie Cheney.
Superworld is set in an alternate world where everybody has powers, however, a supervillain has taken over. The one kid who lacks special abilities is the only person who’s able to steal the Super Stone that keeps the villain in control – but to do that, he must pull off the dangerous heist while rallying his hero friends in a war against the villains.
Superworld: Save Noah, on which the Paramount pic is based, was published by Random House Childrenn’s Books in November 2022. Their upcoming second book in the series, Superworld: Destructo World, will be published by the same label in early 2025.

Fans love watching beloved stories from their favorite books come to life on the big screen. With the right creative visualizations, a classic story from a novel can be further enhanced in a film medium. The Harry Potter and The Hunger Games franchises are stellar examples of how live-action movies can properly represent their source material. Unfortunately, not every movie adaptation of a book is a success, especially when it comes to animation.
Some animated film adaptations, like Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, overshadow their valuable messages with dated references, unrelatable characters, and cheap gimmicks. Other movies, like James and the Giant Peach make changes to the source material that are nonsensical and offputting. Whether these films make unnecessary changes to their stories or entirely transform the messaging for the worse, these adaptations have little to offer their audiences compared to their original storytelling.

Taylor Swift's concert movie, The Eras Tour, has already broken records with $26 million in presales, and is projected to gross $100 million in its opening weekend. The success of The Eras Tour movie is good news for theaters, especially since many films have been delayed due to strikes in Hollywood. The release of The Eras Tour movie has caused other films, like The Exorcist: Believer and What Happens Later, to change their premiere dates in order to avoid competition.
After Barbie, another blonde icon is ready to conquer the box office. Taylor Swift is coming to theaters with The Eras Tour, and it seems like the concert movie will give the musician a new record to add to her long list of accomplishments. A lot of great movies are leaving on Aug. 1, including Dr. Suess' The Lorax, the hit film based on the children's classic comic, and Hotel Transylvania, where the infamous Count Dracula wants to put an end to the romance between his vampire daughter and a human, along with Julie and Julia, where a journalist learns the life of Julia Child through her cooking.

Perhaps some of the most influential works of literature for children, Dr. Seuss' adaptations face the same problems as Disney's remakes. With a questionable past and inevitable future, many wonder what lies ahead for the stories they grew up with. Whether it's The Cat in the Hat or Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, times are changing, and concerns are raised as classic tales see modern adaptations.
The mind behind beloved stories such as How the Grinch Stole Christmas! and Green Eggs and Ham, Theodor Geisel, or, as he's better known, Dr. Seuss, is one of the most influential names in literature. Over the years, Dr. Seuss' works have seen countless adaptations, including movies, TV shows and numerous other mediums, placing him among noted authors such as Roald Dahl, Judy Blume and R.L. Stine. The ensemble cast of Nickelodeon's Salute Your Shorts has taken a variety of different career paths since the show ended. Debuting in 1991, the teen sitcom followed a group of campers at Camp Anawanna and the different adventures they get up to and the relationships they have over the course of a summer. The main star of the series changed over the course of its two seasons, but for the most part, the characters stayed the same. Bullies, preppies, and every other '90s stereotype came together to prank, fight, make friends, and be kids in a way that wasn't always depicted on television.
While the show only ran for two seasons, it gained a cult following and has a 75% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Salute Your Shorts was part of a gambit by Nickelodeon to inch into the original programming space that The Disney Afternoon had taken when it...

‘The Hunger Games’
Spitz came to Lionsgate via its absorption of Blair Witch Project studio Artisan. Before that, Spitz was at Reservoir Dogs distributor, Live Entertainment which was acquired by Artisan. Spitz handled several franchise hits including John Wick (the latest Chapter 4 of which became the highest grossing in the franchise with $180M+ this weekend), Hunger Games, Twilight Saga, Saw, the Tyler Perry canon and Expendables. He was also behind such notable counterprogramming and awards hits as La La Land, Knives Out, Wonder, Crash, Fahrenheit 9/11 and Precious, among many others.

Dr. Seuss is one of the most beloved children’s authors of all-time, and classics like The Cat in the Hat, It Happened On Mulberry Street, Fox and Sox, and Yertle the Turtle have been celebrated for generations. Seuss was awarded with the Pulitzer Prize in 1984 for “his special contribution over nearly half a century to the education and enjoyment of America's children and their parents,” and was granted with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his achievements.
Unfortunately, Seuss’ work has had a somewhat rocky road translating to the big screen. While some younger viewers may have some nostalgia for Ron Howard’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas due to Jim Carrey’s performance, it’s hardly an authentic translation of the book’s themes. The ill-fated The Cat in the Hat movie starring Mike Myers is commonly regarded as one of the worst movies ever made.

The Night Agent dropped out of the top three on Netflix’s list of most popular English-language TV shows for the week of April 24 to April 30. Meanwhile, The Diplomat held onto its crown.
The Diplomat ranked as No. 1 for the second week in a row with 66.46M viewing hours, which is up fairly significantly from its premiere week viewership.
Season 2 of Sweet Tooth took second place with 48.34M hours viewed. The debut of the second season, which hit Netflix on April 27, also boosted Season 1 back into the Top 10 at No. 6. The final seven episodes of Season 2 of Firefly Lane brought the second installment to No. 3 on the list with 48.34M hours viewed.
The Night Agent came in at No. 4 with another 37.68M hours viewed, which is still fairly impressive after more than a month of viewership. That was followed by Beef with 24.48M. Other returners included Love Is Blind Season...

Paramount+ decide to stream “Scream VI” 45 days after its theatrical launch. It’s parallel to its PVOD debut — but that means streaming takes priority.
PVOD revenue usually precedes streaming placement. Universal, which makes PVOD available for most films after three weekends, places titles on Peacock after 45 days. Warner Bros. Discovery offered “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” for PVOD after 21 days its theatrical debut, but Max will have to wait two months.
As a result, the PVOD debut for “Scream VI” is muted. Instead of a strong showing across the board, it is #1 at Vudu (which ranks by revenue), but currently stands at #7 and #8 at the transaction-based iTunes and Google Play. It debuted as high as #2 on iTunes but quickly fell, perhaps as streaming awareness increased.
The not-yet-streaming “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” (both Disney) took #1 spots (iTunes with “The Way of Water” and Google...

Disney maintained its lead on all VOD charts, now with a different title. “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” replaced “Avatar: The Way of Water” (both $19.99) as #1 after a four-week run that arrived 100 days after its theatrical debut. “Quantumania” had a 60-day delay after its disappointing $213 million domestic box office. Both films stand apart from the recent norm of home play before 31 days.
No word yet when “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate), “Air” (MGM), or most importantly “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) will make the leap. “Super Mario Bros.” might be available within two weeks (based on the 31-day window established in 2020 by the just-ousted NBC/Universal CEO Jeff Shell). Any of those films might prevent “Quantumania” from establishing more than a two-week run at #1.
One other new film entered the three lists, which reflected 14 titles among the 30 slots. Sundance Grand Prize winner “A Thousand and One” (Focus) grossed under...

The Night Agent is still sneaking its way up Netflix‘s list of Most Popular TV.
The series racked up another 90.04M hours viewed for the week of April 10 to April 16, reigning over the week’s English-language series and soaring to No. 6 on the all-time list. With 605M hours viewed since release, The Night Agent took the place of Stranger Things 3, bumping it down the list along with Lucifer Season 5 and Season 1 of The Witcher.
There is still a few days left before the series’ 28-day measurement window ends, meaning it could easily climb into the Top 5. The No. 5 spot is currently held by Season 1 of Bridgerton with 625M hours viewed.
Second place on this week’s Top 10 went to another thriller: Beef. Word of mouth has certainly helped the series starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong more than double its audience from the previous week with 70.38M hours viewed.

It has to be tempting for Lionsgate’s ‘”John Wick: Chapter 4,” Amazon’s “Air,” and Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” to accelerate their PVOD releases: The home market is dying for something new to watch.
After 60 days in theaters, Disney released “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” today and it immediately went to #1 at iTunes; expect other charts to follow suit. For now, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (Disney) repeated as #1 at Vudu and Fandango for a third week, with recent releases “65” (Sony), “Creed III” (MGM), and “Shazam: The Way of Water” (Warner Bros. Discovery) rotating second through fourth spots on all three charts, all at $19.99. The only new title is “The Jesus Revolution” (Lionsgate), for sale at $19.99.
Lionsgate release windows follow no set pattern. “Jesus” had seven weekends in theaters before home release, but “John Wick 4” was offered for pre-sale to great success parallel to its March 24 theatrical debut.

None of the college basketball teams seeded in the top three made the NCAA final four — but if you think that’s an upset, Nintendo can do you one better.
Already the top film released so far this year, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) is en route to a seven-day total (Wednesday-Tuesday) of $245 million-$250 million. There’s nine months to go, and many more films to come from Marvel (“Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3”) and DC (“The Flash”), as well as franchise titles from “Fast and Furious,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Indiana Jones,” a live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid,” and many more.
Even so: Two cartoon plumbers with vaguely Italian accents may be enough top them all. It could be the #1 domestic release for 2023.
Based on its doubling first week, $500 million is a sensible estimate. To be the year’s best, it would need at least $600 million — a total that doesn’t demand much optimism.

“65” (Sony) and “Shazam: Fury of the Gods” (Warner Bros. Discovery), both $19.99, were the sole new entries on VOD charts on an otherwise static week. However, three’s a trend: The new titles join last week’s “Creed III” in arriving on PVOD in 28 days or fewer after their theatrical releases.
As home-release strategies evolve, it’s clear that distributors love that lucrative PVOD revenue. At the same time, these charts reinforce the idea that playing in theaters elevates these titles.
“65” was a modest theatrical performer ($31 million in 31 days), but with its sci-fi genre and Adam Driver as the lead it can draw early home viewers. And since Sony doesn’t own a streamer, it has more incentive to maximize VOD.

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" adapts Nintendo's beloved video game franchise about the mustachioed Italian-American plumber who fights evil turtles as much as he does clogged toilets (if not more). This is the first film adaptation of the "Super Mario" games in 30 years, the last attempt being the infamous 1993 live-action film "Super Mario Bros."

One of the most eagerly anticipated series of the spring is coming to Netflix on April 6. Ali Wong and Steven Yeun star in “Beef” as strangers involved in a road-rage incident. But rather than let insurance sort it out, the two drivers morph into lunatics bent on revenge, resulting in increasingly harrowing — and hilarious — circumstances.
Watch the trailer for “Beef”:
More than just a meme, on April 13, Netflix unveils limited series “Florida Man,” which follows a struggling ex-cop (played by Edgar Ramírez) forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philly mobster’s runaway girlfriend. What should be a quick gig becomes a wildly spiraling journey into buried family secrets and an increasingly futile attempt to do the right thing in a place where so much is wrong.

Also coming to Netflix in April will be the final chapter of “Firefly Lane.

So many great stories in history start out with the key players hating each other — as it is in Netflix and A24’s “Beef,” streaming on Netflix in April. Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”
The series from Lee Sung Jin premieres on April 6. See below for more titles coming to Netflix in April 2023.

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Extrapolations
Although Apple TV's Extrapolations primarily draws inspiration from real-world climate change phenomenons, its depiction of sci-fi horror has a lot in common with a classic Dr. Seuss story. After Extrapolations' first episode sets the stage for its overarching narrative by telling a fictional tale of the impact of rising temperatures, the series builds on it with each episode by portraying the consequences of climate change. Owing to its illustration of the spiraling impact of the environmental crisis, Extrapolations can seem borderline terrifying in some of its chapters.
However, despite all the elements of environmental horror combined with real scientific undertones in its storyline, Extrapolations gives viewers hope with the optimistic human core in all of its narratives. Even in some of its darkest arcs, where it discusses the geopolitical impact of climate change on third-world nations, Extrapolations ends on an uplifting note that...

February is the shortest month of the year but Prime Video is paying that no mind with its jam-packed list of new releases for February 2023.
This really is an uncommonly stuffed month on the Amazon streamer and it all starts with a handful of Amazon Originals. Amazon’s original offerings kick off with the release of Dave Franco-directed romcom Somebody I Used to Know on Feb. 10. That is followed by Carnival Row season 2 – a gritty fantasy crime drama is set in a world of steampunky fairies. The show stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevigne and this batch of episodes will be its swan song. Meanwhile The Consultant on Feb. 24 is a dark comedy workplace thriller starring Christoph Waltz.
The biggest hits this month, however, might just be some recent cinema faves. If February is for lovers, Amazon didn’t get the memo as there are quite a few horror movies of note here.

Deliciously fanciful desserts are served up on new Prime Video cooking contest Dr. Seuss Baking Challenge, hosted by Tamera Mowry-Housley. Oh, the things that are made by the talented teams of pastry chefs and cake artists who make even green eggs and ham sound appealing. Each episode transports viewers to the make-believe City of Seuss as the participants take inspiration and put their culinary spin on timeless tales such as “The Cat in the Hat,” “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “The Lorax,” and “Horton Hears A Who.” Judges and baking bigwigs Clarice Lam and Joshua John Russell decide the best bites and narrow down the field of nine duos to one across multiple rounds. The winning “Seuss” chefs earn honorary citizenship, are inducted into City Hall’s Hall of Fame, and receive a key to the city and 50,000. Here Mowry-Housely, who also hosted last year’s Baker’s Dozen, takes...
