- A canary-yellow dress and a pair of black pumps, that's what hot chick talent agent Ella Simms (sexy sleek slim blonde Katie Cassidy) is wearing starting off her day as the text comes in from her boss, Caleb, that there is a crisis on the Boomkat video shoot, director Kavi has stormed off the set. "Mother!" she exclaims, and complains to Lauren about being swamped with work. Lauren has her own objective, applying to be a rotary physician.
David is forcing his way into his Dad's study. Not a two-million dollar painting he's after this time, but the key card to his office. When Michael arrives sooner than expected, David has shrewdly brought along an excuse, a toy truck festooned with a red ribbon, a birthday gift for Noah, his little kid half-brother. Annoyed at the sight of him, Michael argues with him. David let's his Dad clearly know that he suspects him of having murdered Sydney. She was going to expose him to the medical board for having faked her death twelve years before. We are finally enlightened to the mystery of the reappearance of Sydney. That crucial night when she was run over (back in the final episode of Season 5 of Melrose Place (1992), she was rushed to Wilshire Memorial, and Michael was the attending physician, and for reasons yet unclear, but having to do with the inmediate threat* to her life, Michael used his authority at the hospital and switched bodies, the cadaver in the body bag was passed off as Sydney. David taunts Michael that he now had a motive for wanting to get rid of Sydney. Michael scoffs at him for believing evrrythiing pill-popping Sydney in her drugged state told him.
*things happened very differently in the original series. Samantha Reilly (pretty Brooke Langton) ran over Sydney on her wedding night, because of a fight with her Dad who was trying to escape from the police)
Jonah is happily singing in the shower. "I've got Riley Richmond in my hands!" She turns on the basin's tap, affecting the supply of cold water to the shower, and scalds him playfully. Outside, creamy-skinned Violet (hot redhead Ashlee Simpson) is sitting on tiptoes next to the swimming pool. She clearly longs for the attention of Auggie. Caleb expects of Ella to fix the situation on the music video set. The ydillic bantering is short-lived when Jonah discovers that Riley hasn't shared the news of the engagement with her friends and parents yet. Just as the two square off arguing, Ella comes barging in yet again, amused by their little quarrel. She has a unique career opportunity for Jonah, directing the Boomkat video.
Leaving for work, Lauren hears a sound from murdered Sydney's apartment. The crime scene investigation barriers have been broken and the door lies open. She goes inside. While she is looking at a framed photograph lying on the floor, we see a blurred movement behind her in the walk-in closet. She leaves. Camera reveals that it's Violet playing dress-up with a green dress of Sydney's. Close-up shows her anxious face.
Arriving at work, Lauren singles out Michael, who reports at the desk that he seems to have mislaid his key card. She wishes to become his intern. Hoping to grab his attention, she mentions knowing David, and explains that all the residents are emotionally closer after the murder of their landlord, which sets Michael remembering how Sydney re-entered his life, turning up at his mansion, let in by Vanessa (lithe Brooke Burns) who thought she was one of his colleagues from the hospital. Sydney had been in an LA jail for six years, but has kept Michael's name safely out of the investigation.
Ella explains to Jonah that she cannot afford to strike out in front of her boss, as Caleb would easily turn her office into his lounge. Johah is dismayed to discover over the levelled barrel of a .45 that gun-toting Taryn (Taryn Manning as herself) has had a bad experience with a fan and now has a fear of stalkers, resulting in a stand-offish attitude to just everybody, but Ella has great faith in Jonah, with his people skills, as the guy to win over her confidence and successfully direct the music video.
Riley compliments Violet on the beautiful green dress as she comes over to be zipped up. Reminding Violet of the day she first met Sydney, who was wearing that same dress. They talk about a gift Violet is planning to give to someone she wants to be noticed by, and Riley suggests a mixed CD.
Riley consults cook Auggie on selecting a tasty dish she wishes to prepare for Jonah. He jokes that he thought her culinary skills peaked with grilled cheese. And she thought he just lived to surf every wave on the planet. Auggie confesses relationships are complicated, cooking comes with instructions.
Jonah gains Taryn's trust and she'll leave the gun in the trailer. She is perturbed at the space-girl outfit she has to wear out in the sun the whole day long for the video shoot. Jonah thinks she looks like a robot in bad need of a can of WD-40, and decides to do the shoot his way, and gets her to wear her own casual dress while he photographs with an energetic handheld style.
David uses the key card to gain entry to Michael's office, but Lauren finds him there. He warns Lauren that Michael is best avoided. "He goes through interns like he goes through ex-wives." But she is adamant that she wants to work for the talented doctor.
Violet buys Auggie a pair of $200 sunglasses. He declines the expensive gift, which she cannot (?) afford. Riley visits Jonah on the set to try mending fences, but he is 'super-busy' and 'fighting against the light', doing an excellent job, but she is dismayed.
Michael is impressed with Lauren's resume, but she has been red-flagged for financial reasons, and while her optimism is adorable to him, working for him excludes "the time to pick up that extra shift at Starbucks." She mentions that David was in his office.
Riley is concerned about how the morning with Johah started off on the wrong foot, and confesses to Auggie that she must be the worst fiancee in the world. He pours her a drink. Jonah wraps the video shoot, and declines Taryns enticing invite to a loft party held afterwards where the bedroom is equipped with a stripper's pole and a much more private film could be shot. "Once gunshy, always gunshy! Pow!" Taryn giggles. Ella, toting a stylish Fendi bag, overhears, and warns Jonah that he is facing a life of 'birthdays and bar mitzvahs' because that's all life with Riley has to offer.
Riley was, after all, 'drinking for two', and is now more than just a little tipsy. She confesses to still being unsure about Jonah, and Auggie responds "I think you do know how you feel, that's why you're scared." They kiss, but she catches herself and breaks it off. He calms her.
David comes home at Melrose Place to find the little truck with the red ribbon on his desk. Michael confronts him for having been in his office. He sneeringly blames all David's angst and spates with the law on his abandonment issues. David retorts that Michael left his Mom in the lurch on her deathbed. To which Michael ominously states that he would make it Priority One making up for lost time getting to know every little thing about wayward David. "Enjoy the painting!" he goads, and is flat-out accused, which he denies, while reflecting about an encounter with a vengeful Syd, "I can't be dragged out of my life everytime you have a meltdown." And on that fateful night, little Noah couldn't sleep, but Michael had some place to go, some urgent business to finish...
Riley confesses to Jonah that she is inexperienced, never having been in a serious relationship, and she is now in awe of him after seeing his confidence directing the video shoot. "Jonah, I want to dive in with you." She has finally updated her Facebook status, told her friends and family, and Jonah is pleased. He tells her that she could confide in him about anything, but she doesn't mention that aborted kiss.
Ella learns from Caleb that director Kavi DeKnight likes Jonah's work on the set, and plans to take full credit for it, that way it will get full unreserved acceptance by the public, and so what if a little baby-faced newbie gets turned aside? Is the way Hollywood works, after all... Near plagiarism, Jonah whines, and Ella has regrets.
Michael welcomes Lauren to his team, telling her David vouched for her as a hard worker. She later thanks David, who now has access to Michael's computer, finding files on all the ex-residents of Melrose Place on it, from Jo and Amanda and Alison (misspelt) to all the current residents. He wonders what his sneaky Dad has been up to...
