Although novel coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions in the state of Victoria meant that crowds were not permitted at football matches, the Geelong Cats resisted pressure from the Australian Football League to move the game interstate, as happened to two other matches in round 14 originally scheduled for grounds in Melbourne. A further relaxation of the restrictions that took effect on the night before this match allowed a crowd capacity of 7,000 people due to it being located in regional Victoria.
