There's no doubt that Netflix is the biggest name in streaming. Though it lost some subscribers in 2022, the company has come out the other side and now boasts around 247 million paid subscribers — almost 50 million more than its closest rival, Prime Video. But the rise of Netflix has come at a cost to us all. That is to say we've been fed a seemingly never ending stream of middling "content," most of which seems to come and go without making any significant impact.
While this cultural nightmare continues unabated, Netflix has been gleefully raising prices, mainly because they signed up everyone they possibly could and now need to squeeze 'em for everything they've got. All of which would be fine — or at least, par for the course in our free market reality — except the streamer insists on taking our subscription fees and funding stuff like "Obliterated."
What's "Obliterated?" It's an action...

Exclusive: The BBC has greenlit a landmark documentary series spotlighting a once-in-a-generation Pompeii dig from Secrets Of The Saqqara Tomb producer Lion TV.
All3Media-owned Lion has gained access to a huge excavation taking place on the site of the former ancient city, which was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius around 2,000 years ago.
In the BBC’s Pompeii, present-day discoveries about the Roman world will be combined with a ‘ticking clock’ narrative told through the stories of real individuals from history who witnessed the ancient disaster.
“We don’t know what [the dig] will find but we do know the BBC wants new ways of hearing these stories,” said Richard Bradley, Chief Creative Officer of Lion.

Unlike Love is Blind, Netflix’s latest dating reality tv show focuses more on strategy than finding love. The cast of Perfect Match consists of reality stars from various Netflix shows who hook up and fiercely compete to become the most compatible couple in the house.
This binge-worthy competition is cutthroat. The cast of fan favorites doesn’t hold back from ripping other couples apart to get ahead.
‘Perfect Match’ couples solidify their match by bunking up together
Hosted by Nick Lachey, contestants entering the Perfect Match villa in Panema City are familiar faces from Love is Blind, The Circle, Too Hot To Handle, and other popular reality shows.
Each day, their goal is to quickly get to know their housemates and find a match before the end of the night. However, an uneven number of people means two contestants will get eliminated. The pressure to find a partner is high.

Back in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, there was a CBS show called Circus of the Stars. The show featured a mélange of early ‘90s network TV stars, from Alfonso Ribeiro to Bronson Pinchot to Six from Blossom. It gave fans a thrill to see all of these beloved TV stars assembled in a different context, usually doing minor acrobatic tricks or pretending to train Pekinese dogs. It was like the ultimate crossover episode.

Netflix might have hit the jackpot with its latest reality experiment, “Perfect Match.” The streamer took the casts of all of its reality hits — “Love Is Blind,” “The Ultimatum,” “Too Hot to Handle,” “The Mole,” “Selling Tampa,” “The Circle,” “Sexy Beasts” and “Twentysomethings” — and mixed them all together in an attractive combo of “Love Island,” “Bachelor in Paradise” and “Are You the One” that might actually improve on all three of those shows, depending on how the season plays out. It’s the best dating show the streamer has put out so far, though it relies on the stupidity of those shows to succeed. “Perfect Match” couldn’t exist without “Love Is Blind,” but you don’t actually have to have made it through “Love Is Blind” to love “Perfect Match.”

When did reality TV shows stop being, well, real? Critics of the genre will argue that they never were, and they might have a point. No one believes the cast of Made in Chelsea just so happen to bump into each other on the King’s Road every other day. But think back to Big Brother, or even the early series of Love Island, and you’ll find a lot more reality. Members of the public, unused to cameras and far less bothered by the opportunities that could come from these shows, let their guards down and created great TV in the process. If they returned to other reality shows, it was with a filter in place and any innocence gone. The dreaded self-awareness had set in. These contestants are now Reality TV Stars, here to play the Reality TV Game.

On Netflix's unorthodox dating reality show Sexy Beasts, there are a couple things viewers can always rely on despite the show's unpredictability: firstly, that there will be some incredible, transformational special-effects makeup, and secondly, that the narrator's voice-overs will definitely make you laugh. In the midst of watching cartoonish devils go on dates with fuzzy panda bears and speckled dinosaurs, have you ever wondered who exactly you're listening to? You might not get to see the wisecracking narrator wandering around Sexy Beast Manor, but he's the guy who can be counted on episode after episode for some silly commentary, snarky jokes, and occasional truth bombs. So who's the man who brings a little bit of familiarity to this completely otherworldly show? The voice belongs to none other than comedian and Catastrophe actor Rob Delaney.

Apple TV Plus released a trailer for “Invasion,” which launches Oct. 22 with it first three episodes.
The new series hails from Simon Kinberg and David Weil and is set across multiple continents as citizens across the globe struggle to deal with the titular event, which at first presents as smaller and more manageable issues.
“My fellow citizens of the world, what I have to say to you is not something I was ever prepared to say. As many of you know by now, we are suffering from inexplicable and seemingly unrelated incidents ranging from power outages to the destruction of infrastructure and homes,” the president says in the trailer, which you can watch below.
But what was once thought of as being individual incidents very quickly are realized to be connected and being caused by something “not of our Earth,” she continues.
Soon it will come to light that this...

The strangest dating show on television is back and beastier than ever this October as six new singles are welcomed to the weird world of costumed speed dating. Sexy Beasts returns to Netflix for a second season on October 7, and eager viewers can get a sneak peek (see below) at some of the costumes on display this season. The new “beasts” include a buck-toothed cat, a goblin with a mohawk, a hairy pig creature, and what looks to be a zombie-like figure with its brain on display. For those unfamiliar, Sexy Beasts sees its participants enter blind date scenarios while dressed in elaborate costumes made with Hollywood movie prosthetics. In each episode, a new single chooses from three potential love matches, all disguised in costumes. The chosen person will only reveal their real face once a final decision has been made. The concept behind the format is that the connections...

It feels like there are a million dating shows to watch these days, but only one includes a high likelihood of seeing a witch make out with a rooster. The can't-look-away (but maybe want-to-look-away) Netflix reality series Sexy Beasts has officially been renewed for a second season, per Variety. The streamable love-child of the Masked Singer and Love Is Blind takes "don't judge a book by its cover" to a whole new level as suitors are disguised as animals and mythical creatures with the help from one of the most talented makeup and prosthetic artists in Hollywood, Kristyan Mallett.
The six-episode first season follows a group of singles ready to find love solely based on their connection to someone's personality, not their physical appearance. Each episode opens with a new lead, who embarks on a series of three blind dates, and then two more elaborate dates, while masked as different...

Two decades later and Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away remains one of the most gorgeous animated films ever produced.
“It’s been 20 years this week since Hayao Miyazaki’s wondrous rite-of-passage saga Spirited Away was first released in theaters in Japan. The winner of the 2003 Academy Award for animated feature and, up until just recently, the highest grossing film in Japanese history.”

Why you should revisit the original Planet of the Apes series streaming on HBO Max right now.
“The newer films may have nailed the visual aesthetic of a simian-ruled Tomorrowland in a way the classics never could. But it’s the core of the original Planet of the Apes that makes it one of the most brilliant, innovative, and absurd sci-fi franchises ever. It’s also dark as hell. Here’s why you should go ape and binge all five classic Planet of the Apes...

The saying “Love is blind” will be put to the test July 21, when Netflix launches the dating series “Sexy Beasts,” which already has the internet abuzz.
Each episode features a person looking for love — but they will have to choose a match based purely on personality: The contestant picks the winner from three candidates, and everyone’s face is hidden by a mask, often complete with a prosthetic headpiece. The reveal comes after the decision has been made.
The masks were created by Kristyan Mallett, a leading prosthetics artist who counts “The Theory of Everything” and “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” among his credits. He also worked as a makeup designer on the BBC’s original “Sexy Beasts,” which aired in 2014.
His development process began with concept art, which he presented to Simon Welton, creator and executive producer of the series, who showed the ideas to Netflix. Among his many eventual full-head creations were a demon,...

You hear it all of the time: those who appear on reality television are referred to as characters, even though they are real people. It may be because they come across as over-the-top or it may simply be because they appear on screen alongside scripted comedies and dramas, and viewers like a shorthand. But for a new wave of reality dating series, a contestant’s inner character is more important than looks alone.
From Netflix’s “Love Is Blind” and ABC’s “Celebrity Dating Game,” where relationships are formed by two parties talking to each other through a wall, to Netflix’s “Sexy Beasts,” in which elaborate prosthetic masks are worn on dates, creating a connection is all about vibing with someone’s personality, not catching their eye from across the room because one finds them physically attractive. Even HBO Max’s “FBoy Island,” which does allow everyone to size each other up physically,...

To enjoy long-term success, a reality show needs to surprise, to delight, to reinvent and subvert its own formula as it goes. But to break out in the first place, it needs a compelling hook.
“Sexy Beasts,” Netflix’s new dating series, has the latter part down, sort of. Each of its episodes tells the story of an individual who professes to want to build a relationship based on inner beauty. For that reason, both the protagonist and the three potential suitors from whom they’re choosing are kitted out with elaborate prosthetic makeup jobs that tend to distract the eye while not concealing the enviable bone structure beneath. To borrow a widely-made observation, it’s “Love Is Blind” — Netflix’s dating show featuring contestants falling in love, sight unseen, from across the barrier of an isolation pod — meets “The Masked Singer.” And that’ll add up to a formula that grabs viewers’ attention,...

The end times are nigh. At least I kind of hope they are, because Netflix just released a clip from their upcoming Sexy Beasts dating show. The series, based on a British dating show from 2014, puts its contestants in complex prosthetic makeup in an effort, I think, to make the blind dates about more than just […]
