Det. Munch (Richard Belzer) says "The Brit's did a study of solitary confinement. They found it causes psychosis. They stopped using it". This could refer to Dr Sharon Shalev, a UK criminologist who's key research area is the use of solitary confinement. She authored "Sourcebook on Solitary Confinement" (2008), which is a practitioner's guide to the health effects of solitary confinement. Since publication, the book has become a widely used point of reference internationally. She was instrumental in the revising the solitary confinement section of the "UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners". However, in prisons across the UK, there are still a number of grounds on which prisoners can be isolated.
