- Lisa Hartt: Enough energy for you Ted?
- Lisa Hartt: Just fantastic George.
- Lisa Hartt: Say Ted, don't you think it's time you and I got together?
- Lisa Hartt: You're over there, I'm over here, and I think it's time for some closer collaboration.
- Ted Gärdestad: Yeah, you're right Lisa.
- Ted Gärdestad: There's only one little small detail, three thousand nine hundred and thirty-seven miles of cold water, and I can't swim!
- Lisa Hartt: Not to worry my friend, we have the modern miracle of television going for us.
- Ted Gärdestad: Okay, whatever you say.
- Ted Gärdestad: How long will it take?
- Lisa Hartt: Well, if the clock's correct, and the director follows his script, I'd say you could make it during this little break.
- Ted Gärdestad: Music is universal, and that's why Sweden and Canada has gotten together to share this musical experience.
- Lisa Hartt: I love music, all of it!
- Ted Gärdestad: Yeah, that goes for me too Lisa. And you know, I think music is a way of life.
- Lisa Hartt: Hey Ted, do you see any new ABBA records over there?
- Ted Gärdestad: No, I don't think so. But I can get you a deal on a Bruce Cockburn album.
- Lisa Hartt: You know, a hit is a hit is a hit all over the world. And records like the ones they're making here make music available everywhere.
- Lisa Hartt: Hello, Ted Gardestad in Sweden!
- Ted Gärdestad: Hello to you, Lisa Hartt in Canada!
- Lisa Hartt: You're a singer and a song-writer, and so am I!
- Ted Gärdestad: You record your own material and perform in concerts, and so do I!
- Lisa Hartt: And your country has long cold winters!
- Ted Gärdestad: And so does yours!
- Lisa Hartt: And both our countries share a lot of Swedish hockey-players!
- Ted Gärdestad: Well, I think we share something else as well Lisa. A very busy pop-music scene.
- Lisa Hartt: And a lot of fantastic performers and song-writers!
- Ted Gärdestad: And that is what this show's all about!
- Ted Gärdestad: Lisa, I hope you liked it.
- Ted Gärdestad: But now I wanna show you something else, rock 'n' roll music in its own right.
- Ted Gärdestad: You know, that was the kind of music I was brought up to.
- Ted Gärdestad: And today, rock music and boogie is still very much on top here in Sweden, thanks to Jerry Williams.
- Lisa Hartt: Country music, that's really a North American sound.
- Lisa Hartt: I guess what makes it so unique is its honesty, yeah honesty!
- Lisa Hartt: So if jazz and rock can get together, how about country and rock?
- Lisa Hartt: Yeah, I wonder what our Swedish friends would think of the music of the Cooper Brothers?
- Ted Gärdestad: Lisa, we have been talking about how musical styles come together in different ways.
- Ted Gärdestad: If country music is a Canadian type of folk music, our folk music here in Sweden is slightly different.
- Ted Gärdestad: Its sort of blue and moody and maybe in the character of us.
- Ted Gärdestad: So here's a friend of mine, Ann Christine Hedmark, to show you what I mean.
- Ted Gärdestad: I'm sure it's the same in any recording studio in the world.
- Ted Gärdestad: If you don't get it right the first time, you can always do another take until you get it right.
- Ted Gärdestad: And you can use all the special techniques to create special effects.
- Ted Gärdestad: Personally I love to fiddle around with all these gadgets.
- Ted Gärdestad: But there's something special I think for any performer to sing for a live audience.
- Lisa Hartt: Yeah, I see what you mean.
- Lisa Hartt: The same thing happened here in the sixties with groups like The Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Beatles, that whole Motown sound.
- Lisa Hartt: And here in Toronto, there was a sound that spread rhythm and blues right across Canada.
- Lisa Hartt: And it's still very much alive today with George Olliver!
- Lisa Hartt: Welcome to Canada, Ted.
- Ted Gärdestad: Thank you Lisa, it's nice to be here.
- Lisa Hartt: Listen, what is that? It's beautiful.
- Ted Gärdestad: It's something I wrote a long time ago. Must have been in the 20s.
- Lisa Hartt: In the 20s. Okay, yeah.
- Lisa Hartt: You know, I haven't been writing that long.
- Ted Gärdestad: No?
- Lisa Hartt: I've been on the stage, on the road, in the bars. Performing.
- Ted Gärdestad: Mhm.
- Lisa Hartt: And I guess it's just the last four years I've been writing.
- Lisa Hartt: Because for me, the joy is getting out there and singing, you know.
- Ted Gärdestad: Yeah, no, I've been writing since I was six years old.
- Lisa Hartt: Six years old?
- Ted Gärdestad: It's some kind of a therapy for me.
- Lisa Hartt: Do you ever... Have you ever been at a point in your life...
- Lisa Hartt: I found myself in a point in my life a little while ago where there was a song that was written, and I believed in it so much and we had so much resistance from the record companies, it seemed like I had to have this song recorded.
- Lisa Hartt: I had to have this out because I wanted to make a noise so badly. I knew it would be the beginning of everything for me. And I called it "Old Time Movie", you know.
- Lisa Hartt: Do you wanna do it? You wanna try it with me?
- Ted Gärdestad: Well, I don't know, how does it go?
- Lisa Hartt: Uh, A major 7,
- Ted Gärdestad: A major 7.
- Lisa Hartt: A major 7. Pick one, anyone.
- Lisa Hartt: That's good. Lets try it.
- Ted Gärdestad: Okay.
- Lisa Hartt: I'll guide you.
- Ted Gärdestad: That was really pretty Lisa, really.
- Lisa Hartt: Thank you Ted.
- Ted Gärdestad: I liked it.
- Lisa Hartt: Yeah. Thank you.
- Lisa Hartt: What are you working on?
- Ted Gärdestad: Uhm, way back in Sweden, I hadn't been writing for a couple of months.
- Ted Gärdestad: So, just a month ago I had one of those nights, you know.
- Ted Gärdestad: I wrote two songs from 11 o clock in the night 'til 6 o clock in the morning.
- Lisa Hartt: I love it, I love it.
- Ted Gärdestad: That made me so happy so I wrote another one.
- Lisa Hartt: You... That's great.
- Ted Gärdestad: It's just a simple tune, a carefree tune, you know. Without second thoughts.
- Lisa Hartt: Can we do it?
- Ted Gärdestad: Okay.
- Lisa Hartt: Yeah, lets do it.
- Ted Gärdestad: Okay.
- Lisa Hartt: I love it already!
- Lisa Hartt: Wow, what a way to travel!
- Ted Gärdestad: Yeah, how do you like Sweden?
- Lisa Hartt: I don't know, I just got here!
- Ted Gärdestad: Yeah, I know, but how do you like it so far?
- Lisa Hartt: Oh, it's fantastic!
- Ted Gärdestad: Thank you Lisa, I'm glad you liked it.
- Ted Gärdestad: Now come with me for a minute.
- Lisa Hartt: Okay!
- Lisa Hartt: You know, Ted.
- Lisa Hartt: This has been a really good experience for me.
- Ted Gärdestad: Me too Lisa, really.
- Lisa Hartt: And what a gorgeous way to see Stockholm.
- Ted Gärdestad: Yeah, isn't Stockholm pretty?
- Lisa Hartt: It's more than pretty, it's beautiful.
- Ted Gärdestad: And we've seen some great performers and heard some great music.
- Ted Gärdestad: I think the only thing we haven't done together is sing.
- Lisa Hartt: You know, you're right. And it's crazy, cause after all, we're both singers.
- Lisa Hartt: Right, so let's do it.
- Ted Gärdestad: You're right Lisa, he's really good, he's incredible.
- Lisa Hartt: He's wonderful.
- Ted Gärdestad: But listen, I think one great musician deserves another.
- Lisa Hartt: Oh, I agree. I agree.
- Ted Gärdestad: So there's a group back home in Sweden.
- Lisa Hartt: Yeah.
- Ted Gärdestad: That I really want you to hear.
- Lisa Hartt: Okay.
- Ted Gärdestad: So how long will it take you to pack?
- Lisa Hartt: How long have I got?
- Ted Gärdestad: Well, about the same amount of time you gave me.
- Lisa Hartt: Well, lets go then!
- Ted Gärdestad: Sure, right on!
- Ted Gärdestad: Now I'm going to show you a phenomenon first hand.
- Lisa Hartt: A phenomenon?
- Ted Gärdestad: Mhm.
- Lisa Hartt: Well, I know about saunas. I know about Bergman movies.
- Lisa Hartt: But are there any other phenomenons?
- Ted Gärdestad: Yeah, a four-letter word.
- Lisa Hartt: What? You have four-letter words in Sweden?
- Ted Gärdestad: Well, sure.
- Ted Gärdestad: Two of which are the same.
- Lisa Hartt: Now I guess people are the same everywhere.
- Ted Gärdestad: Well the letters are the same, not the people.
- Lisa Hartt: So tell me exactly what you're talking about.
- Ted Gärdestad: ABBA.
- Lisa Hartt: Oh, alright!
