I started to watch Dolly Alderton's BBC Drama 'Everything I know about love' with my teenage daughter. She lasted 2mins 46 seconds precisely. It was the Larkin that did it really. Fresh that day from an A level English Literature exam, quotations from the self-depreciating poet were to be fair, the last thing she wanted to hear. 'And they're on a train', she mused before leaving the room, 'how very Whitsun weddings'.

I continued watching, a fifty something woman perhaps not quite the target demographic, but I was hooked. Rather than something to watch to take the mind off the boredom of the household chores, I soon found myself literally dancing around my ironing board to Rizzle Kicks, Down with the trumpets.

Although set in 2012, the drama resonated with me and I was transported back to the eighties, my own era of misspent youth. Except for the drug taking that is, but still with plenty of alcohol to cloud one's judgement. Or it may have just been Street's hat. Whatever it was, I look forward to sharing the chaotic lives of Maggie, Birdy, Nell and Amara over the next few weeks who act as a timely reminder of another Larkin quote 'You can't put off being young until you retire'

This was great

I enjoyed this series. There should be another one. Cast was good. Cinematography was good. Music was good. The final 15 minutes of episode 7 were really, really great, Maggie's mum's speech at the end was great. That's it. That's the review.

Feel good Romcom that's very easy to like - a winner.

Its 2012 and four bright young things end up in a house share in Camden and discover themselves and the city.

Production values were good, well directed, written and shot with an intelligent under-stated score. Cast was strong in depth and for me the lead Maggie played by Emma Appleton stood out, she really bossed it.

Based on a true story its more 'When Harry Met Sally' than 'I Will Destroy You' - its happy to be an entertaining light comedy/drama and it works really well, lots of snappy dialogue and laughs and it rings true. Congrats to all involved.

It's so nice to watch a show of people in their early twenties trying figure life out. I watched the whole series in one sitting and just loved getting lost in the show! The acting is wonderful and just so full of heart! 100% recommend.

Beautifully done

Wow I loved this completely. As a 20 something living in London in 2012 I felt everything about this show as of it were written about me. The focus on female friendship is perfect and so overlooked in romantic genres today, the storyline between birdy and Maggie brought a tear to my eye. You can see Dolly all over the production of this too, and it's fantastic as expected. Let's hope they renew it for a second season.

Charming and filled with 2012 nostalgia

Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes this felt a bit 'too' real. The utter heartbreak and devastation of loosing your best friend to a relationship is a feeling that is so relatable yet hardly ever explored on screen. The performances are all great and really loved the script. I wish the finale had featured the friends more and wasn't set in New York with a new romance . BUT other than that I really enjoyed this series and have to soundtrack on repeat.

I loved this series, just have the last episode to watch.

Emma Appleton as Maggie is outstanding, but the other three main cast members hold their own.

And the soundtrack is phenomenal, had me rocking on my sofa.

Highly recommend.

Oh it was all of the things. I absolutely devoured it. As a fan of the book I knew it would resonate but good fecking god it was like a slap in the face which brought me right back to my early twenties. So raw. So honestly and so relatable. It's wonderful to finally acknowledge the importance of friends in a world obsessed with romantic love. Thank you for such a masterful and honest showcase of friendship.

I've read Dolly's memoir the show is adapted from and I adored it. The way it's been developed for the screen is just stunning and the four leading actors are brilliant. Ignore the low ratings and just watch 💜

Am I the only one who thinks this show is totally overrated? Maybe my expectations were too high since it's been so hyped up. Totally unlikeable characters and slow storyline.

nicolesidoti15 June 2022
Really enjoyed the adaptation of this much-loved memoir. Brought me right back to living in London in that era - the writing and soundtrack nailed it. Great production and performances. I really hope this gets renewed so we can see more of these characters.

Brilliant!! There needs to be more.

Great characters. A diverse group of girls that maintained their friendship even with their conflicting lifestyles. The way they accepted each other's difference and embraced them. True to life as time goes on the reality of life begins to interfere in their perfect world.

The story is fun, exciting and sad and takes you back to a place in your life where you learnt so much about relationship with friends, partners and work colleagues.

If you want to laugh, cry, reminisce either by yourself or with a friend grab a glass of wine and watch this!!!!

You will love it.

Fabulous and honest
joappleby-8217523 June 2022
Oh thank god! A non-preachy, unjudgemental story about young women forging their way and establishing themselves as individuals in London, before wokery hit with as much negative force as Covid. I thought it might be twee and 'teachy', but it is scandalously well-written, funny, bewitching, even. Beautifully acted (ahh Birdy!) I haven't finished it all yet. That is tonight's treat. The only disconcerting thing is Dean Gaffney-lookalike Maggie's boyfriend (sort of) - she is stunning. His 'charm' wore off long ago.

Relatable

See a few bad reviews and I do love girls but this is relatably British. Most girls who move to London can relate to this and it's enjoyable! Not going to win any awards but I enjoyed it and the characters.

Friend or faux
hello-0524910 July 2022
Working Title's newest series to hit streaming services, Everything I Know About Love, is based on Dolly Alderton's bestselling memoir.

Set in 2012, the series is hyped as the modern Bridget Jones' Diary. Sadly, it falls short and is neither as funny nor heartwarming.

Maggie (Emma Appleton) is 24 and has newly arrived in London. She shares a house in Camden with her childhood friend, Birdy (Bel Powelly), and uni friends Amara and Nell. They are young, beautiful and have wardrobes to die for.

Series one follows the exploits of our so-called "new favour girl gang" as they drink, take drugs and navigate the dating scene.

Maggie is our self-destructive manic pixie dream girl protagonist. Birdy is her responsible, overlooked best friend. Cracks start appearing in their friendship when Birdy gets a boyfriend for the first time.

The concept is sound, but despite the best efforts of the talented young cast, there's not a single likeable character in the show.

The girls are shown to be shallow, irresponsible and quick to ditch each other if a better offer is available. Maggie's a terrible friend, and her continuous s poor choices are frustrating.

The audience is left wandering with friends like these who needs enemies.

Perfect
halliecooper30 March 2023
It's a perfection depiction of your 20s. Watching it in my mid 30s, I feel overwhelming nostalgia and love for who I was then, and also the wisdom I have now sheds new lights that only make watching it a deeper experience. The depiction of female friendship is so smart and accurate and messy and all encompassing. This show is....absolutely brilliant.

The actors are absolutely wonderful, and Maggie has this effortless light and depth and freedom that is utterly exquisite.

I want more and more episodes of this show, I want to live with these people for longer. I desperately hope we get a second season.

can truly relate to this series
vickiswanson15 August 2022
Without doubt this series reflects a huge majority of young 20 somethings that I have know or currently know, although I cannot confirm about the extravagant sexual experiences they have, that could possibly be an exaggeration. Not sure. The acting is wonderful, the music is fantastic. The trials and tribulations are quite within realistic lines, however, doesnt matter if it is or isnt, it is dammed good TV - very enjoyable.

Dolly Alderton is the mistress of observation. I have seen this several times and still scratch my head. The four girls are so different but brazen, robust, vulnerable, excitable but so real. Emma Appleton as Maggy is so annoying but wonderful whilst Beth Powley as Birdie is so wonderful but annoying.

The tracks are wonderful choices... especially in episodes 5 and 6 where Stand on the Word from the Joubert Singers and Goodbye England from Laura Marling completely nail it. I felt I had been there and ok I had.... Greenwich Village or Camden or maybe Belsize Park. I so wanted to be there again. The most heart wrenching moment was the gentle lecture from mummy of Maggie played by Sophie Thompson. Verbal beauty and literal care exposes writer Dolly as one of our best writers. I'll stop waffling and let you watch it. If you don't like it, no worries you probably haven't been there.

Outstanding
rebeccahughes-8755016 July 2022
I haven't read the book, if I had, I'd probably rate this lower. But I haven't read it so it gets the top score because it deserves more than its average of 7.

This is a very accurate representation of twenty something friendships and general life navigation. Bravo, excellent casting and written so so well. Laughed a lot and sound track is ace.

Ps the reality show element I thought was Fab! Great touch...

Only thing it doesn't do is make you cry, but so what, we don't want to cry when we think about our 20's save that for your 40's, cos it happens and a lot!

Cross fingers for season 2
serenar275 January 2023
Despite not having read Dolly Alderton's memoir that the series is based on, I was drawn to Everything I Know About Love due to the fact that I enjoyed her novel Ghosts and I'll watch anything starring Bel Powley. The series centres on a group of women in her 20s who move to London after uni and are faced with finding their first jobs, as well as navigating friendships and relationships. Maggie is the "party girl" of the group, and prefers to go out clubbing and hook up with strangers, while her housemates focus more on their careers and finding serious partners. While Nell and Amara met Maggie at uni, Birdy has been Maggie's bestie for over a decade, and living in London proves to cause a real strain on their relationship. After Birdy enters her first relationship, Maggie feels that she's losing her best friend - and at the same time, Birdy thinks that Maggie is suffocating her and wants to try to be her own person.

Everything I Know About Love is a fun series and I loved the dynamics between the four girls, as well as the dance routines and the scenes centering on the younger versions of Maggie and Birdy. The soundtrack is brilliant too, featuring songs like Domino (Jessie J), Don't Stop Movin' (S Club 7), Lights On (Katy B and Ms Dynamite) and Gold Dust (DJ Fresh). As is the case for most current series, Everything I Know About Love felt rather short with only 7 episodes, and I was left wanting more. I hope it gets renewed for another season.

Disappointing
eleanorbrian11 July 2022
I found this disappointing overall, especially after reading the book. Birdies character I found really annoying. All the characters seem very immature to the point of them not feeling believable or very likeable. There just wasn't as much depth to the story as there was in the book, so it didn't capture my attention. The last episode I did enjoy more (second half of it) as I felt that it was a bit more interesting. Maybe this means a second series would be better.

Entertaining, funny, touching and really well made
biba_yu29 March 2024
I didn't expect to like this series, I didn't even plan to watch it, until I checked reviews and gave it a chance. Actress Emma Appleton is amazing, she won me on first scene. She is really great in this role, and even though I am totally different person than Maggie, she managed to make her relatable and make me understand her and like Maggie a lot. Other actresses are not far behind, they are also amazing, even the supporting actors are great. Characters are well defined, multidimensional and deep, which is also great.

Story is a bit all over the place, I admit, it's hard to see the one particular theme or concept or story that has beginning and end, it's a bit messy. But then again, so is life.

In general, I enjoyed the series a lot, it was sweet, funny, and sad and touching at times, and even though I am total introvert and nothing like main characters, I managed to understand them and like them all a lot. Of course, as all young people, they were reckless and not responsible at times, but that's normal when you are in your 20s.

One thing I didn't like, and that's very subjective, is background music, mostly a kind of indie songs which were really overwhelming for me personally, too loud, too long and taking over some scenes too much. I didn't like them at all, but then again, that's just me.

Other than that, I really recommend this series.

doesn't feel very 2012 but still amazing
meagandel23 April 2023
I loved this series. It truly captured the pains of growing up, and sometimes apart, from your best friend. It was lovely to watch these characters stumble around and try to find their way in situations that were funny but relatable. There are truly insane moments that are bookended by beautifully acted ones (esp between Maggie and her mom).

My one gripe is (as someone who was 22 in 2012) the fashion and makeup choices seemed more modern than early 2010s. There was a lot of glitter/studded eye makeup, vaguely timeless clothing. It took me out of the storytelling as I had to constantly remind myself what decade it was.

I guess that proves that being 24 is the same no matter the decade. We all have to learn to make mistakes and grow from the consequences and that's exactly what this show displays wondrously.

Hoping for a season two
ant_net28 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I just binge watched the season one all at once . I loved loved loved it. I really loved watching Maggie going through changes . Watching Maggie and Birdies friendship starting to changes with her starting to date and finding her mate . See Maggie who was use to having her Bestfriend as her constant companion . Watching Maggie go through changes trying to navigate it being more independent . I would really love to see her new romance develop with her love interest in America. Maybe him wanting to come to the UK because he really wants to risk everything to see where their relationship can go . I would also see where the other women life's go changing as they start going in their own directions. I am hoping this series is picked up for a season two. I like the story line of one Roomate becoming more involved with her married boss and also watching someone make a career choice and risking it all for dance.
