Yusef Lateef, who died on Monday after a bout with prostate cancer, was a devout Muslim who did not like his music to be called jazz because of the supposed indecent origins and connotations of the word (although those origins are still debated). He preferred the self-coined phrase "autophysiopsychic music." Furthermore, his music encompassed an impressively broad range of styles, and the only Grammy he won was in the New Age category -- for a recording of a symphony. Think about those things amid the flood of Lateef obituaries with "jazz" in the headline.
That said, certainly Lateef's own musical origins indisputably revolved around jazz. Growing up in Detroit, a highly fertile musical environment in the 1930s and beyond, Lateef got his first instrument, an $80 Martin alto sax, at age 18. Within a year he was on the road with the 13 Spirits of Swing (arrangements by Milt Buckner).

Malcom in the Middle's Chris Masterson stars in Impulse, an apocalyptic short film we first talked about back in 2009. So what exactly is a "pre-apocalyptic" film, you ask? No idea. Really, every movie could be pre-apocalyptic couldn't it? Is the 40 Year old Virgin "pre-apocalyptic"? Alright so I'm being somewhat of a douche about this, but the news release from Bluebox regarding their new production, Impulse, which is "described as a pre-apocalyptic adventure" just confuses me.
We don't have a synopsis for the top-secret project, but we know that it stars Malcom in the Middle's Christopher Masterson and was shot in early November. The tagline on the poster however seems filled with mystery:
When the birds circle, the wind stops and the sirens sound, your time is up.
Bluebox Films is a production company based in Iowa and Los Angeles. Headed by filmmakers Scott Beck & Bryan Woods, it has produced five features and 13 shorts, which have garnered national attention through outlets such as MTV and Project Greenlight. Bluebox Films’ latest productions,...
