Farhana: An Average Thriller
gauroar7 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this film on Sony Liv with a lot of expectations especially since it was starring Aishwarya Rajesh (who is known to choose solid scripts consistently) but felt a tad disappointed.

The screenplay is engaging and keeps the viewer hooked till the end but the climax leaves a lot of questions unanswered. There was very little scope for Selvaraghavan's role and the script could have been adjusted to potray a more powerful villain. The film also seemed to cause a lot of confusion to the viewer and one felt compelled to ask the relevance of a parallel murder incident. A decent movie but nothing to rave about.

Honest story with immature characterisation ...
m-ramanan23 July 2023
RATED 6/10 Language: Tamil Source: Nil Media Partner: Sony Liv

The story is very good and opt for current situation. But the characters and the picturization is age old. The worst part is that it give very wrong impact on the working women. And still couldn't understand why the heroine need to be from Muslim family.

The characters are not natural and they change their characters differently in different situation. Husband character is best example. Why he is silent and what he thinks in the interval block, god only knows....

Selvaragavan character was quite good in the beginning and interesting, he also changed after interval and become dead boring towards end.

One time watchable, by ignoring all these things.

Starts like a star, ends like a dud!!

Farhana is a thriller drama film written and directed by Nelson Venkatesan. The film stars Aishwarya Rajesh, Jithan Ramesh and Selvaraghavan.

Middle-class mother Farhana takes a call centre job due to her financial situation. Although this gives her freedom, it also leads her into a web of danger.

This film has an entertaining plot but due to novice and immature approach the film turns out to be some family drama or some episode of any crime TV show.

The start of the film is good and the first part of the film is very impressive and the film will give you a glimpse of a great thriller film in making but as the film progresses and gets towards it's climax the film starts turning into some random family drama film.

Acting in the film is average. Selvaraghavan was impressive till the time he was on phone. Jithan Ramesh was impressive. Aishwarya Rajesh tried too hard but failed to impress.

Screenplay of the film is also bad and it seems that the film was unnecessarily stretched. The climax of the film is disappointing.

Overall a promising plot ruined because of immature approach.

A Wannabe Sensation Turned Into A Senseless Soap.
SAMTHEBESTEST12 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Farhana (2023) : Movie Review -

Nelson Venkatesan's Farhana is a female-led thriller starring Aishwarya Rajesh in the lead. Farhana is set in a Muslim ghetto, which gives it a certain sensibility to handle this sensitive topic. But the conflicts and conclusion are both too soapy and childish for a female-led film of today's era. Remember the Bollywood classic The Lunchbox? Two strangers engage in a conversation and build a bond around them, but they can't attain the immortality of this unknown relationship. Farhana was somewhere similar, with the call centre replacing the lunchbox thing, but the directions are totally different in the second half. Not just different, but very dull. Something we saw in Shah Rukh Khan's Fan (2016), when a desire for one meeting turns into an obsession. Farhana is a mixed bag that doesn't get either thing right. It's a half-baked script with a clueless screenplay and a soapy presentation.

The film is about a Muslim woman, Farhana (Aishwarya Rajesh), whose husband is jobless, and so she has to step out of the house for the income. She gets a job in a call centre as a credit card seller. But the income is not that fancy. After looking at some girls in the office who are living fancy lives and earning more, Farhana wishes to join their department. Despite several warnings from her colleague, she joins the department and is blown away by the sexually disturbing world of phone sex. Uncomfortable Farhana finds a new comfort with a caller named Dhayalan (Selvaraghavan), who shares a deep and moving conversation with her. After talking over the phone for many days, they decide to meet each other on Eid's auspicious day. Farhana has to leave her date incomplete as she learns about the death of her colleague, Sofia (Aishwarya Dutta). This makes Dhayalan very angry, and his desire to meet her becomes an obsession, and he starts blackmailing her. Will Farhana find a way to stop him and keep her job?

Nelson Venkatesan's script looks interesting in the beginning when you see Farhana getting involved in formal sessions with an unknown guy. I thought the movie was about exposing the racket, which cons call centre girls and then kills or rapes them. It did even reach the point, but then shifted the directions to an aimless path. First, a married woman can't be such a fool to believe someone's voice and even fall in love. If yes, then she is a fool, and sorry, I can't feel any sympathy for a fool woman. The protagonist's theory went wrong here. Second, the antagonist's being so stubborn about one thing is too much. If he knows that he can easily find the girl by keeping a watch on her and blackmail her by threatening to leave the call records, why didn't he realise that the woman can do the same things too? What's the intelligent, dramatic part here? Third, why was Farhana's husband so useless? Did it make any sense to see his character accept every situation with no anger, pain, or reluctance? He was blinder than Kanoon, I guess.

Aishwarya Rajesh delivers an honest performance, but somewhere the impact is missing. The character graph doesn't really allow her to go out of the way, even while dealing with highly emotional scenes. For a change, she excels in uninteresting scenes, such as breaking down during a phone call and reacting to instant motions. Selvaraghavan comes too late to the party, so naturally, he doesn't really offer anything. Most of the time, it's his voice that you know, and certainly, you can't judge someone's acting through his voice without seeing his face and expressions. Jithan Ramesh does well in his role, while Aishwarya Dutta looks tremendously glamorous in her sexy role. Anumol's support is fine too, and the rest of the cast has done decent.

Justin Prabhakaran's music doesn't really score well enough. The camerawork of Gokul Benoy captures a few good frames in close shots and pan shots otherwise. The runtime of 2 hours and 18 minutes really bores you with so many slow moments and tedious segments. It could have been trimmed by 15-20 minutes, and then, I guess, I would have had a little more fun while watching it. Nelson Venkatesan's script is more disappointing than his direction. This is a well-written daily soap unfit for a feature film, especially in today's time when feminist films have become more sensible and hard-hitting. As a whole, Farhana attempts to be a sensation but transforms itself into a senseless and boring drama.

Wow! What an amazing movie!!
Asterix838 July 2023
Well what can I say about Farhana..started off as a slow, ordinary movie and then it zooms off like a rocket! Farhana is story of a housewife who joins a call centre to earn a livelihood. When she moves to a new department which involved romantic chats with strangers, she struggles initially but was saved when she meets Dhaya. The long conversations with Dhaya was poetic and filled with love. As the viewer is lulled into a breezy romance, the story abruptly changes shade into a dark thriller and picks up pace. The event which leads to this change was when Farhana and Dhaya make plans to meet.

Loved the way how the director manages to mold the movie into different genres with ease. Kudos to Nelson Venkatesan and his story-telling & direction. Thoroughly enjoyed this movie!

Clickbait now happening with Movies too
TheNonSmoker7 November 2023
At first, it felt like a feminist film, where woman typically revolt against the patriarchy, but till the interval it popped like a bubble, and took a sold U-turn, I guess the movie crew understood the worth of their heads, lol Anyway, this movie makes absolutely no sense, the plot is baseless, a woman from a typical Muslim family tries to earn a living but is not allowed by her typical society, still, she makes it somehow, being so submissive, shy, still cracks a call center interview, but she was not happy so she tried next step by joining an adult call center for better pay... Overall it all felt like a joke.

a splendid and unassuming film!
ngandacinema8 July 2023
Let's admit, the film did not start on a good note, it was actually unappealing that it opened up with an intimate scene, and we were just like 'what's this???'

But we're so glad we still gave it a chance!

The exciting element of the story was that the mystery caller's face was never seen throughout and the fact that Farhana was muslim, it added more flavor as she had to keep up with her traditional lifestyle at home while taking on a different personality at work.

There were various characters (e.g. Farhana's hubby, Farhana's male colleague, etc) who kept the story very intriguing😃

We applaud the editor, V. J. Sabu Joseph, who worked meticulously well to build up the tension. He was playing with our emotions as we began to fear for Farhana, and the fast-paced score tortured us with suspense.

Bravo to Nelson, the director who guided the scenario to deliver a thrilling experience

The film sent a needed message to archaic and conservative families to just relax, people can still remain decent as they move with the times

A tiny weeny weeny negative: someone was sprayed with a pepper spray and the person just quickly rubbed his eyes and it was over😳

The name Farhana means "Joyful, cheerful, glad'" and this was the inner personality she was only able to discover when she got a job and began to provide for her family.

In a way, we felt like the name also meant that it's not because I'm a happy and cheerful woman that you should take advantage of me or mistake my kindness for weakness.

Beautiful experience
mystylesv10 July 2023
Cinematography and the story keeps one on the edge. The movie is for art lovers. It's engaging and serves the right courses throughout the meal. Mesmerizing background score. There is no one thing to despise in the movie. The acting is just perfect. It's dark, romantic, witty, intriguing, emotional, lovable, realistic. It's a mirror to a society which is very much is hiding behind phones. An amazing take on modern day world of technology and the crimes associated with it. The story is so beautifully woven and it displays so many interesting themes. The display of materiarchal society where the daughters live with their husbands, is something very new and fresh. Must watch. Will stay in ones heart and mind.

Amazing thriller movie.. Must watch
gmvijay-9354514 July 2023
Initially started with some unwanted scenes which was like where this movie heading but continued to watched and thrilled the way movie progressed.

Hats off to the director for portraying the daily struggles of common people like the shoe store owner, flower seller etc.

Iswarya Rajesh nailed her character and proved again she is a real bet in this industry.

Selva raghavan selects the best movies storyline and proved again in this movie. Although his face is not shown for several minutes into the movie but his voice made the magic increasing the thriller factor.

Music during the last 30 minutes was too good.

Overall a must watch movie.
