Season Two Review
southdavid18 November 2023
Though I, of course, watched the first season of "Love Life" first, it was actually this second season that was included in the Guardian's top TV of 2022 list. Similarly to the first run, I enjoyed the mix of romantic comedy and drama and found Wiliam Jackson Harper to be an engaging lead.

Marcus Watkins (William Jackson Harper) is an editor, living in New York with his wife Emily (Maya Kazan). A chance encounter with Mia (Jessica Williams) leads Marcus to cheat on Emily emotionally, if not physically, though she discovers the relationship, and the marriage ends. Whilst his connection with Mia comes and goes, he forms a few other relationships over the years, as he recovers from the end of the marriage and creates a new life.

Even though it's focused on an entirely different character, with Anna Kendrick's Darby only making a couple of appearances across the run, the season is very similar to the last, as we see a few years of Marcus' life centred on the relationships he has. Again, we meet his friend group and family, and those relationships are explored similarly to his romantic ones. I would say that this one is slightly heavier than the first run, dealing with Covid, miscarriages and divorce, btu it remains funny largely down to the winning combination of Harper as the lead, and the peerless Keith David as the narrator of this run.

But that was all she wrote for the show, that was cancelled at the conclusion of this second run. It's a shame as I've liked both of them and the anthologising aspect of the show would allow it to run indefinitely. If you're on the fence, I think both seasons are worth your time.

How come there's no Emily episode

Warning: Spoilers
Having watched the first season, I like how different this story is instead of just repeating the pattern of last season. I enjoyed seeing how race was being portrayed and discussed here. I like how the show keep it lighthearted and exciting but there's still some deep moments to think about.

However, I really would have liked it if they did an episode about Marcus and Emily. How they fell in love and got married. I feel that this story is really important to tell cause they spent 7 years together and it doesn't make much sense to me that this Mia person can just come along and screw things up for them. This show is also too heavily focused on Mia and how Marcus is so crazy about her. I find it very hard to like Mia. The not telling about having a boyfriend and cheating thing is such a turn off.

#BringDarbyback

Let me be blunt. Season 2 stinks! All the charm and wit from season 1 is long gone, and all that is left is an empty shell. Sure it has a lot of the same themes and even the exact same plot points as season 1, but it just isn't the same. The characters aren't likable, and their decisions make no sense. Also, this final episode of season 2 isn't even about love. It is just a 30-minute epilogue for a relationship that was too forced. Let's be honest Marcus could've done a lot better. But hey, Darby is in it for less than a minute, which is better than nothing. But at this point, I will take what I can get. If you are interested in Good Black love stories, I would recommend Creed or Collateral Beauty. They tell a similar story in a much better way. As for Love Life, if they can't find a way to bring Darby back as the main character or at least a central character, then maybe it is time to let it go. Not everything needs to be a shared universe like the MCU. After all, you could always tell similar stories about love with a different title, and that doesn't have to be a bad thing. Every love story is different, so why try to make an anthology series where they are all lumped together? Shouldn't we embrace the diversity in our human experiences with all kinds of love? All I know for sure is that I missed Darby this season, and I feel cheated as Anna Kendrick did a lot of promoting for this second season only to have about 10 minutes of screen time. But hey, at least we got some fun interviews with Anna on late-night talks shows.
