More like Night of the Boredom...
paul_haakonsen30 September 2023
I have to admit that the synopsis for the 2023 horror movie "Night of the Caregiver" sounded interesting, and I had read some okay things about the movie somewhere online. And thus, I opted to sit down and watch "Night of the Caregiver".

Oh boy, this was a boring movie. Writers Craig Hamann and Alexander Nevsky failed to produce a properly enjoyable or entertaining script and storyline for the movie. And while I did manage to sit through all 77 minutes that the movie ran for, I found very little to be entertained at, much less to enjoy in the movie. And it was a rather dull horror experience, to be bluntly honest.

And I have to admit that I am rather surprised with what passes as being horror in this day and age. Apparently "Night of the Caregiver" was supposed to be a horror movie. Well, sure, if you consider absolute boredom to be scary, then by all means.

I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, and that is usually something I enjoy when I sit down to watch a movie. However, the actresses and actors in "Night of the Caregiver" virtually had nothing to work with in terms of script, storyline, dialogue or character gallery.

Visually then you're not in for anything memorable. The movie makes use of a couple of practical effects, which comes off looking like Halloween props and costumes more than actual creature designs.

If you enjoy horror movies, as I do, do yourself a favor and give director Joe Cornet's 2023 movie "Night of the Caregiver" a wide berth. It just simply isn't worth the effort, time or money.

My rating of "Night of the Caregiver" lands on a two out of ten stars.

Uhhhhhh. What?

Warning: Spoilers
Uhhhh. What ? That's best way to start this, because I'm not sure what their point was,to be made. You can some stupid when movie starts, that tells you to,"run". This gal is sitting in the living room. All these lights are on. She hears something. She has flashlight she turns on. "Hey Einstein. The whole point of a flashlight, use it when there is no other light source. This next one was rich. This NYPD detective shows up at this parapsychologist house. He looked like Joey Ramone. Seriously. Wrap around shades. Joey Ramone hair. Joey Ramone leather jacket. I kept expecting him to start singing,"Rock and Roll High School". This demon they had was a joke. This detective goes to this old ladies house, where a young girl is there, playing caregiver. He was trying save her from the old lady/demon entity. Demon tries to kill the detective. He scratches the detective on side of his face. He thin slits his throat, with his long fingernail. They should've fired this demon and hired Pazuzu (The Exorcist movie, for those to young to remember). I mean Pazuzu don't screw around. He gonna kill you in a way, that is acceptable to his fellow demons. I don't even think this demon lived in hell. I say he lived in Palm Springs. It turns out the sweet little old lady, was also the demon for a side gig. The rest of the movie is typical crap the use for "fillers" in a horror movie. You know, cell phone going all wonky. The quintessential spooky voices. This just horrible. You could read it to a kid for a bedtime story. The kid will fall asleep out of boredom. I'd rather listen to our president speak, than watch this abortion of a fil.

A solid horror movie, that reminds me of Tales From The Crypt

I've watched this movie twice, and if you're looking for a suspenseful horror film, you won't be disapointed. All the actors give a convincing performance. The plot is fairly straight forward, but with enough ambiguity, that it keeps you guessing until the end.

The film is done with a low budget, but it doesn't seem low budget, when watching. The actors certainly didn't turn in a low budget performance. They are all pro's, and it shows.

If you like Tales From the Crypt, this movie gives you that feel. Congratulations to Natalie Denise Sperl and Eileen Dietz for an amazing performance. They have great chemistry between them.

An overall solid indie effort even with some minor issues
kannibalcorpsegrinder31 August 2023
Looking for some extra money, a woman accepts a position looking after an elderly woman in hospice care in a remote house and begins to suspect something is wrong while staying there and eventually discovers that a demonic entity is setting her up for a special ritual and must get away alive.

Overall, this wasn't that bad of a genre effort. One of the film's better aspects is the fine build-up at the beginning that provides this with some solid introductory measures to what's going on. Initially giving the kind of proper greeting between the two that lets us see their interactions and behavior around each other that sets them off on a friendly note, this provides the instances of the film's creepier elements to come in as the more time she spends there the more unnatural and chilling the encounters get that provides the film with the proper setup needed to make these sequences work. That allows the film to become quite fun once it lets the demonic secret loose and it starts moving into more overt genre territory. Featuring the initial stand-by of seeing things happening only to have it be played off as a product of an overactive imagination or unfamiliarity with staying in an old house like hers, the gradual reveal of the hauntings becoming more physical and targeted more towards her provides some intriguing confrontations with the demonic creature at the center of it all as well as providing some solid gore-gags for these moments. All told, these are what manage to work quite nicely for the film. There are some issues that bring it down. One of the main factors against this is the rather obvious and unsurprising setup at play here for bringing her into the house, which is inherently familiar with what's going on. Rather than attempt to do something original or clever with how the whole haunting is going about, this takes an immediately obvious turn towards something seen coming from the very start. This is especially since it decides to start off with a sequence from the main attack scene as the cold open which is a bit of a disservice by helping to make what's going on clear from the offset. That also leads to the other issue here where it's far more than what it should be for a film of this type. Despite its length, there are some excessive scenes here that don't really need to be, from the strange sidestory about the detective investigating his missing mother that brings him into the fold for little reason to the overlong revelation monologue that's used to spell out what's happening even though it's already pretty obvious what's going on so it falls flat. A bit more time discussing the implications of the paranormal that gets brought up could've been a way to do this, but otherwise, these are enough to hold this down.

Rated Unrated/R: Violence and Language.
