In 2007, an unassuming, bespectacled Michigan State University freshman named Tyler Oakley posted the first video to his then-new YouTube channel. Ten years later, Oakley is one of the internet's biggest stars and an iconic member of its Lgbtq community, and his friends and family have taken some time to honor him. To celebrate a decade of his videos, Oakley's manager Lisa Filipelli put together a supercut that features the best wishes of his YouTuber colleagues, his associates, and his parents.
As the montage begins, Oakley believes he is watching a compilation of notable moments from the history of his channel. Before long, however, Filipelli appears to inform the YouTube star that his friends have some words for him. Oakley's list of well-wishers includes online video notables like Joey Graceffa, Liza Koshy, Lilly Singh, Zoella, both Vlogbrothers, and his good friend/Psychobabble co-host Korey Kuhl, as well as his mom and dad,...

The more scientifically-inclined of the two Vlogbrothers is joining his fraternal partner in the world of novelists. Hank Green, who over the past decade has established himself as one of the most eminent figures within the online video industry, has landed a publishing deal for his literary debut, titled An Absolutely Remarkable Thing.
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing tells the story of an art student who discovers a sculpture of a giant robot in the middle of Manhattan. After she documents her experience with the mysterious object online, she finds herself thrust into a bigger story with international implications. Green, who knows a thing or two about the power the social web holds, will make internet culture one of the chief themes of his work.

Thanks to titles like The Fault in Our Stars, Looking For Alaska, and Paper Towns, John Green has become a highly-regarded and commercially-successful figure in the world of young adult fiction. Now, his brother is looking to make his own splash on bookshelves. Hank Green, who along with John makes up the videomaking duo Vlogbrothers, revealed on Twitter that he has sent a first draft of a novel to a literary agent.
Today I sent a first draft of a 90,000 word novel to a real-live book agent. First step in a long process, but I took it!
— Hank Green (@hankgreen) April 3, 2017
The 90,000-word manuscript Green says he has written translates to 360 pages, gi9. For comparison, The Fault in Our Stars came in at roughly 92,000 words. While Green has not offered any details about the subject matter of his book, he did explain that he began writing it during the 2014 edition of National Novel Writing Month,...

The network of educational YouTube channels run by Hank Green and his brother John often have merit within classrooms, and for that reason, the Green brothers tend to keep their language appropriate for all ages. Hank’s latest channel, however, bucks that trend. It’s a video podcast called Holy F**king Science in which adults use whichever words they need to use in order to impress their co-hosts regarding each episode’s scientific topics.
In Green’s new show, “each person tries to amaze the others enough that they will say ‘Holy Fucking Science,’” the Vlogbrothers co-host and VidCon co-founder wrote in a blog post. The goal of the show is not necessarily to curse every five seconds, but rather to set an adult tone that differs from the kid-friendly content Green typically uploads to YouTube. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we have episodes where the only “fuck” is in the title sequence,...

Vlogbrothers hosts Hank and John Green recently set a personal fundraising record by bringing in more than $2.1 million from fans during their most recent Project For Awesome campaign. That, however, was not their only achievement during the holiday season. At the beginning of 2017, they celebrated ten years on YouTube, a fact John Green noted in a video that also announced the launch of his 100 Days channel.
Hank and John’s vlogging experiment began on New Year’s Day in 2007, when they agreed to send videos to one another each week. Since then, they’ve maintained a remarkably consistent schedule that has allowed them to attract nearly three million subscribers to the Vlogbrothers channel. Now, to celebrate their tenth anniversary on YouTube, they’ve rolled out a series of woodcuts, which are available from their Dftba store.

Vlogbrothers hosts Hank and John Green have become notable Internet stars thanks in part to the candid vlogs they have swapped with each other for the past nine years. At the same time, through ventures like VidCon and the Dftba store, they have served as champions of their fellow creators within the online video world.
Now, for the second year in a row, the Green brothers are finding another way to support the people who make great digital content. They are accepting applications from educationally-minded creators; from that group, they will select a few winners for whom they will provide financial assistance.
The money contributed to the Green brothers’ sponsorship program will come from one-half of the ad revenue generated by the Vlogbrothers YouTube channel, with the other half going to charity. YouTube’s Creators For Change initiative, a worldwide program launched last September in which the video giant is tapping popular creators to serve as ambassadors about key social issues and allotting $1 million to fund content that aims to foster change, is expanding.
Today YouTube added five new Creators For Change ambassadors, including American YouTubers Franchesca Ramsey and John Green. In addition to Ramsey and Green, YouTube has also tapped All India Bakchod, a comedy collective; Indonesia’s Cameo Project; and Dina Torkia, a British-Egyptian beauty and fashion vlogger. Each of the creators will receive a $25,000 grant to use toward a social impact project of their choosing -- with Green already having donated his to the Vlogbrothers’ 10th annual Project For Awesome campaign.

Hank and John Green’s YouTube empire includes channels like Vlogbrothers, Crash Course, and SciShow, and the latest addition to that network will share tips for viewers who want to stay in shape. John Green and his friend Chris will co-host 100 Days, on which they will share the steps of what they have termed a “healthy midlife crisis.”
John Green announced 100 Days in a recent video on the Vlogbrothers channel he co-hosts with Hank. He also discussed the new project on Vlogbrothers’ new community tab, making him one of the first prominent users of YouTube’s latest creator-focused feature.
A trip to the newly-minted 100 Days channel provides more details. In an introductory video, Green notes that he and Chris will educate themselves alongside viewers, with nutritionists and trainers providing the insights of their respective trades. Hank and John Green, collectively known as the Vlogbrothers, have unveiled a new subject for their “students.” The two creators have once again teamed up with PBS Digital Studios to produce new episodes of the educational web series Crash Course. This time, the topic in question is physics, and the host is British engineer Dr. Shini Somara.
Dr. Somara, a self-proclaimed “Stem advocate” who has hosted programs for the BBC, Al Jazeera America, and several other networks, uses an energetic delivery to add some excitement to her area of expertise. In her first Crash Course episode, she spends ten minutes discussing fundamental physics concepts like velocity and acceleration.
"We're thrilled to welcome Dr. Shini Somara to the PBS Digital Studios family,” said Don Wilcox, VP of Digital Marketing and Services at PBS, in a press release. “Dr. Somara’s passion and experience make her a wonderful addition to our great...

On April 30, 2015, John Green took the stage at Madison Square Garden and addressed a theater full of advertising executives. Green, best known as the author of beloved novels like The Fault In Our Stars, was one of the content creators YouTube had chosen to represent it at its yearly Brandcast, when it tells advertisers why its pre-roll ads, brand integrations, and sponsorships are worthwhile investments. The Vlogbrothers co-host is a prominent figure within the YouTube community, and he arrived with a simple goal: He wanted to warn the assembled advertisers about the potential consequences they would face should they choose to ignore the widening appeal of the homegrown online video community.
“They’re doing live events and publishing books; they’re crowd-funding and producing albums and getting grants from nonprofit organizations,” Green said of his fellow creators. “In short, they’re building a world where they don’t have to depend on advertisers.

Quora isn’t normally a repository for information about notable online video celebrities. (That's generally Reddit's domain.) But one user on the question-and-answer website was particularly curious about why the very successful John Green - author of The Fault in Our Stars and more best-sellers, one half of the Vlogbrothers’, and co-founder of VidCon - is only worth an alleged $5 million. So, that user posed the question. And on December 26, Green himself stopped by Quora to answer it.
The original user-submitted question appears to have been written a while ago, as one Quora user responded to the inquiry as far back as April 2015. A total of seven users submitted their own theories and explanations as to why Green did not make the millions more that seem due him thanks to his multiple best-selling books and popular YouTube channels. One user named Clayburn Griffin, who claims to be a part of Green’s Nerdfighter community,...

For the fourth year in a row, the YouTube community’s most significant charity drive has improved upon the previous year’s total. The 2015 edition of Project For Awesome, hosted by Vlogbrothers hosts Hank and John Green, raised $1,546,384, which will support charities chosen by online video fans.
The annual Project For Awesome Indiegogo campaign launched on December 9th, with potential donors instructed to time their contributions based on the organization they wished to support. Money collected in the first 84 hours of the campaign went to a pair of charities selected by the Vlogbrothers: Save the Children and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The online video community’s annual fundraising drive has returned. Project For Awesome, which is run by Vlogbrothers stars Hank and John Green and supported by their colleagues on YouTube, has fired up its annual Indiegogo campaign, which is expected to raise at least $500,000 for charity.

Are you a creator working on an education-oriented online video project? The Vlogbrothers want to hear from you. The YouTube duo of brothers Hank and John Green have opened up their Vlogbrothers Sponsorship program to new applicants around the globe who want to enlighten the world.
The Vlogbrothers Sponsorship program is an ingenious initiative that's funded by the Greens, YouTube, and viewers like you. Until recently, Hank and John had no ads running on their Vlogbrothers YouTube channel (presumably because the Greens gain a good chunk of revenue from Patreon, their other YouTube channels, merchandise, and other enterprises). The John Green adaptation craze that began with last summer’s The Fault in Our Stars and continues next month with Paper Towns has been prolonged, now that Universal has set its take on his short story collection Let It Snow for December 9, 2016.
Green contributed a story to the three-story collection, which also included work by 13 Little Blue Envelopes author Maureen Johnson and ttyl writer Lauren Myracle. Pitch Perfect scribe Kay Cannon is penning the script for the adaptation, which will weave together three unexpected romances that unfold on one Christmas Eve, Love Actually style.
Currently, Let It Snow has the December weekend to itself, but its legs at the box office may be threatened by Star Wars: Rogue One opening the next week. Of course, the holiday crowd coupled with Green’s ardent fanbase should ensure Let It Snow a pretty high opening.

Each of the ten episodes of Titansgrave will follow the adventures of the cast members’ characters as they work their way through game’s unique world, which combines both science fiction and fantasy elements.

Astronaut Scott Kelly is currently in the middle of a year-long stay aboard the International Space Station, which Nasa is using to research the health effects of long-term trips to space. The 2015 edition of YouTube’s annual Brandcast is in the books, and the world’s most-watched video site made sure to let advertisers know it is still number one. Instead of pitching the original programming it recently announced, YouTube let its star creators speak to attendees, offered testimonials from brands, and shared some impressive stats about its ongoing growth. Among other numbers, CEO Susan Wojcicki noted how YouTube now has more viewers on mobile alone than any cable channel.
YouTube’s ongoing growth on mobile is just one part of its continued upswing. Wojcicki said the number of viewers on the site is up 40% since last year, and watch time is up 50%. Many of these new viewers are coming to YouTube via smartphones and tablets, where watch time is up 90%. “Successful entertainment platforms of the future will all share those five characteristics,” said Wojcicki, “they’ll be global, diverse, mobile,...

The YouTube-centric industry, consumer, and fan-based conference, founded in 2010 by Vlogbrothers’ Hank and John Green, has announced keynote speakers from a variety of high-profile online video companies and brands, including Vessel, GoPro, and Twitter.
VidCon, taking place from July 23-25, 2015, has brought on Jason Kilar, founder of premium video platform Vessel (which will host exclusive clips from Ellen DeGeneres' talk show), and Zander Lurie, Senior Vice President of Media at GoPro, to deliver keynote speeches during the three-day event in Anaheim, California. Joining Kilar and Lurie are Baljeet Singh, Twitter’s product lead for television and video, and Derek Callow, YouTube’s Director of Partner Marketing.

Hank Green, as he is wont to do, has authored a new blog post on Medium sharing his thoughts about the YouTube community. This time, the man who makes up one-half of the Vlogbrothers is taking on the topic of advertising rates. How can content creators improve their cost-per-thousand views (Cpm) rate and make a living online? The answer, says Green, is two words long: "Just ask."
In the first section of his post, Green compares the advertising rates videos receive on YouTube to the per-thousand-view figures garnered by TV shows and movies. As you might expect, the latter two media bring in more revenue, but more importantly, they are also more efficient. "If advertising is perfectly economically efficient, then we should be able to say that a YouTube video is 32× less valuable to a viewer than a TV show and 250× less valuable than a movie," writes Green. "I do...

MTV is trying out some new video technology for its upcoming 2015 MTV Movie Awards. The network will use Twitter’s Periscope live streaming app to cover the red carpet in addition to its regular All-Access feeds at the star-studded event on April 12, 2015.
MTV will use Periscope to broadcast fashion interviews and red carpet arrivals, live from the Nokia Theater L.A. Live. To make the experience even more unique, the network has partnered with Orad Hi-Tec Systems to use the company’s Augmented Reality technology. This will allow the Movie Awards show producers to insert 3D graphics into the live video stream to create a multi-dimensional experience.
MTV has previous experience with Periscope thanks to a live session with one-half of the Vlogbrothers and VidCon co-founder John Green. Green took over MTV’s Periscope account on April 6 to discuss the upcoming film adaptation of his Paper Towns book (much like...

John Green became a sensation in the young adult publishing world when Fox adapted his book The Fault in Our Stars into a hit movie in 2014. Now, the author and YouTuber who makes up half of the Vlogbrothers will see another one of his books, Looking for Alaska, transformed into a film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the screenwriters of Green’s The Fault in Our Stars movie adaptation, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, have teamed up yet again to turn the author’s debut novel Looking for Alaska into a Paramount Pictures film. The two screenwriters will be joined by Temple Hill Entertainment for the Alaska movie. Neustadter and Weber previously worked with Temple Hill producers to release not only Fault, but also the upcoming adaptation of Green’s Paper Towns, set for release by Fox 2000 on June 5, 2015.

YouTube, as you might have heard, recently celebrated its tenth birthday. The video site was founded on February 14th, 2005, and its first video, titled "Me at the zoo," arrived on co-founder Jawed Karim's channel nine days later.
Since then, YouTube has undergone considerable changes, so much so that the current site barely resembles the one launched ten years earlier. In order to put the site's history in proper perspective, content creator Hank Green has taken to Medium, where he has offered up a timeline of the significant events in YouTube's history.
Green, best known as one half of the Vlogbrothers, has positioned himself as an online video historian before. This time, he takes a look at the decision that have shaped YouTube, such as its permissive attitude toward misleading content, the launch of its partner program, and the increased focus on advertising that contributed to the rise of multi-channel networks,...

Between his six published novels, John Green has put a lot of words down on paper. Not included in any of those books, however, is a phrase that has commonly been attributed to him. The Fault in our Stars author and Vlogbrothers co-host has offered to compensate a fan after discovering that he didn't write a supposed phrase from his book Paper Towns.
The phrase in question is "I'm in love with cities I've never been to and people I've never met," and most of the "Nerdfighters" who post about Green's work on platforms like Tumblr assumed it to be a line from Paper Towns, which was first published in 2008 and is currently being adapted into a feature film. In truth, Green did not write the line. Instead, it first popped up on the Tumblr page of 13-year-old Melody Truong.
This misattribution became a problem for Truong when Green's fans...

It's been almost one year since we first heard about YouTube's plan to build a kid-friendly version of its site. Now, the video sharing site has pulled back the curtain on YouTube Kids, an app that will become available on February 23rd.
The YouTube Kids app will feature a selection of content catered to the site's youngest demographic. Videos are split into four general categories: Shows, Music, Learning, and Explore. Within these verticals, viewers can find content from DreamWorks TV, Jim Henson TV, Mother Goose Club, Talking Tom and Friends, and other well-known children's programming companies.
A few kid-friendly content creators from the YouTube community have also contributed to the new app. A selection of Mr. Stampy Cat's Minecraft videos will be available, as will educational offerings from the Vlogbrothers. "We're so excited to finally be making educational and science content specifically for kids," said Vlogbrothers co-host Hank Green, "especially...

Kid President is on the road promoting his book Kid President’s Guide to Being Awesome, set for launch on February 3. As part of that tour, the 11-year-old star has partnered with PBS Digital Studios to “throw a pop art show” in various elementary schools across the U.S.
Kid President (whose real name is Robby Novak) wrote about many different ways to make the world a better place in Guide to Being Awesome. Number 60 is all about hosting a pop art show, which is what Kid President, YouTube channel SoulPancake, and Novak’s brother-in-law (and co-creator of the Kid President character) Brad Montague are doing for elementary students.
And the three entities aren’t doing it alone. The art shows are made possible by PBS Digital’s Art Assignment series, hosted by Sarah Urist Green, wife of the Vlogbrothers’ John Green. According to The Video Ink (who originally reported...

In November, PBS Digital Studios announced a deal with Vlogbrothers duo Hank and John Green for a pair of new entries to the Crash Course library. One of those series has now arrived, with blogger Phil Plait bringing his astronomy know-how to the Green brothers' educational hub.
As with other Crash Course videos, the first episode of the astronomy course combines Plait's narration with colorful animations that appeal to the YouTube audience. Plait, who runs the "Bad Astronomy" blog for Slate, begins the episode with a quick overview of his subject. "Over the course of this series," he states, "we'll explore planets, stars, black holes, galaxies, subatomic particles, and even the eventual fate of the universe itself."
Plait's astronomy lessons can be found on the Crash Course channel, which has more than 2.6 million subscribers. At the same time, the Pbsds deal will also bring the videos to educators. The digital...

Project For Awesome (aka P4A) 2014 is over. And it raised more than $1.2 million for a handful of fantastic causes.
The annual online video charity drive conceived of by the fraternal pair of Hank and John Green (known to their 2.4+ million YouTube subscribers as the Vlogbrothers) way back in 2007 with the altruistic goal of decreasing worldsuck started collecting cash for its eight installment on December 10, 2014. And before it concluded and turned into a pumpkin at midnight on December 16, 2014, the initiative raised $1,226,382 from donations by way of The Foundation To Decrease World Suck website (and yes, it’s an actual volunteer-run and IRS designated 501(c)3 charitable organization), more donations via the Nerdcrafteria Minecraft server, even more donations from anonymous donors, and the P4A IndieGoGo campaign.
The IndieGoGo campaign is by far Project For Awesome’s greatest source of cash, accounting for more than $773,639 this year donated by at least 21,734 individuals...

Project For Awesome is back. The fundraising drive, which is run by Vlogbrothers hosts Hank Green and John Green and donates to charities chosen by YouTube fans, has begun its annual Indiegogo campaign. As John Green explained in a video he posted last month, this year's P4A will work a little differently from previous years. While a portion of the proceeds will still go to the top ten charities chosen by viewers, all of the funds raised during the first two days of the drive will go to Save the Children and Partners In Health. As John explained, this division was created to ensure that trolls couldn't completely hijack the voting process, make it easier for deep-pocketed patrons to match donations, and assist a pair of dependable charities that won't necessarily be represented by popular YouTubers. Project For Awesome donations will go to those two charities until noon Et on December 13th,...

John and Hank Green have decided to pass on one of their more popular YouTube channels on to a new owner. The duo (better known as the Vlogbrothers to YouTube audiences and the pair's 8+ million subscribers across their dozen or so channels) has sold The Brain Scoop channel for an undisclosed amount to The Field Museum in Chicago. The Brain Scoop started in January 2013 by the Green brothers and producer/host Emily Graslie. In June 2013, Graslie moved the production of The Brain Scoop to The Field Museum and become the establishment’s Chief Curiosity Correspondent. For over a year, the Field Museum licensed and operated the science-based channel, which now boasts over 250,000 subscribers, more than 100 episodes, and over nine million views. “As soon as I met Emily I knew she had a really fascinating future in front of her,” said Hank Green, CEO of the Vlogbrothers production company, in the release.

Hank Green, who co-founded the Vlogbrothers channel and VidCon alongside his brother John, serves as one of the online video industry's most decisive voices. Green is never shy about speaking his mind, and in a recent post on Medium, he has shared his thoughts on the massive amount of money flying into online video productions. As he explains, this surge of capital has allowed thousands of content creators to profit, but it has also made it difficult for smaller productions to stand out. Green frames his argument around what he called "The Rule of Smosh." He recalls a conversation with Barry Blumberg, who heads up the Smosh brand over at Defy Media. “The guys are so genius,” Blumberg says, “They‘ve always known that they can’t look like TV. They have to look just a little bit better than what the average person can do.” According to Green, this...

YouTube's largest charity event of the year will return in 2014, but this time, it has undergone some slight tweaks. Project 4 Awesome (P4A), the crowdsourced fundraising drive run by Vlogbrothers hosts Hank Green and John Green, will return to the Internet on December 12th. As in previous years, Project 4 Awesome will be powered by the participation of popular YouTubers, who will make videos in support of their favorite charities. Viewers will then use their comments to "vote" for the YouTubers whose charities they support. Ultimately, the top ten charities chosen by fans will split the funds raised by a communal Indiegogo campaign that will be launched by Hank and John. Last year, this system raised $869,591, a record-breaking total that surpassed all previous P4A campaigns. This year, a few new wrinkles will update P4A. The most visible change is the project's date; this year, P4A will move five...

The Vlogbrothers are adding new episodes to their educational catalog, and they're doing it thanks to an assist from the leader in public television. Hank Green and John Green have teamed up with PBS Digital Studios for two new Crash Course series: one covering Us government and a second covering astronomy. The two new series will expand Crash Course's library, which already covers eight different subject. The educational series, which uses the Green brothers' fast-paced narrations, animations, and kinetic typography to convey educational information, already includes series on subjects like world history, chemistry, and literature. These videos have proven quite popular, accumulating more than 2.3 million subscribers on YouTube. At the same time, the channel has been plagued by financial issues. During a 2013 Ama on Reddit, John Green lamented "the godawful amount of money it takes to make Crash Course," since the show's production requires a full team of academic experts,...

The Fault in Our Stars is the latest Young Adult fiction book to find success on the big screen, but there's something distinctly different about this box office smash. Firstly, it doesn't have a fantasy/sc-fi hook like Twilight, The Hunger Games or Divergent, and secondly its author is a man.
In a genre dominated by Jk Rowling, Stephenie Meyer and Suzanne Collins, Tfios scribe John sticks out like a teenager strolling around with an unlit cigarette. Who is this latest literary sensation? We deliver all you need to know about John Green below...

Before he became a best-selling author, Green had intended to become an Episcopal priest and spent five months as a student chaplain at a children's hospital. It was there he met children suffering from terminal illnesses and decided to become an author instead.
