Sex & Nudity

  • Most sex scenes are only implied and no nudity is shown throughout the series
  • Expect kissing and cuddling -- between both opposite- and same-sex couples -- and it's implied that a few have sex, though nothing is shown. Nudity is limited to the occasional guy walking around shirtless. A student and teacher carry on a romantic relationship, despite her parents' rules against it. Teen girls often wear skimpy clothing or revealing bikinis and talk about being "sexy." The older characters in later seasons have often settled into stable relationships, including same-sex ones.

It features some kissing and hugging between the main characters (i.e. teenagers) with mild verbal references peppered throughout as they struggle with the issue of sex and intimacy in their relationships, but no actual lovemaking is depicted. (The main characters make verbal references to losing their 'V-card', 'getting off', 'doing it', etc.)
  • In addition, the series features some verbal references as the other characters talk briefly about sex and intimacy in their relationships, with some shots of women making out with their boyfriends, but with no nudity or sex depicted, as well as mild verbal references to losing ones virginity, hooking up, being on the pill, etc.
  • Throughout most is the show, one of the main characters is dating her teacher, however when they met, he wasn't her teacher.
  • In season 5 there is a sex scene featuring Aria. It is crosscut with a make-out scene between two girls, and is played against music. At the end of the sex scene, Aria is heard asking "Does that hurt?', and then her bare back is shown as she pulls the sheets over herself and her partner.

  • A mother and one of the main girl's brother kiss. He is later seen walking down the stairs, buttoning his shirt.

Violence & Gore

  • There are many deaths in the show, most of which a body is shown.
  • In season five, there is a murder in a house, by A, and blood is all over the house, including broken furniture.
  • A man is hung from the ropes of a bell-tower.
  • A girl is hit by a car and goes to the hospital, though no blood or anything is shown.
  • Towards the later seasons, the show grows increasingly more violent, as we see the girls grow up.

Profanity

  • Occasional use of "damn," "bitch," "hell," and "ass." Women call each other "bitch" semi-playfully: "Wake up, bitch."

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

After a time jump in later seasons, the now twentysomething main cast often drinks, generally at dinner or at parties.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There is always a sense of peril throughout the show.
  • Examples are sequences where Emily brings her girlfriend home for dinner, much to her mother's disapproval as well as her trying to cope with being together with a closeted lesbian where she is unhappy that their relationship has to be kept a secret, etc.
  • The series as a whole takes on a darker tone as well, with one of the minor characters being confined in a mental institution.
  • One of the main characters also suffers from a mental breakdown of sorts later in the series after realizing that her boyfriend has been making use of her.
  • There are many jump scenes, though nothing too scary.
  • In season 5 & 6, we find out that A has created a life sized dollhouse in an underground bunker, and he locks all of the girls up in it. One of the girls comes out with PTSD.
  • A lot of the problems in the show are real life expieriences. Examples: divorced parents, deaths, break ups, etc.

Sex & Nudity

  • The 4 girls are sent a large amount of child pornography containing their younger selves as well as Jenna and Toby.
  • Season 2 deals with Emily's relationship woes as she tries to date other people after her ex-girlfriend, Maya, was sent away to boot camp. (Maya later returns from camp and the pair go on to confess that they still have feelings for each other, and rekindle their relationship as the series progresses.)
  • In one of the episodes, Hanna is in a lesbian bar as she gets hit on by a woman who buys her a drink, with fleeting shots of two women kissing in the background.

Violence & Gore

  • In season 3, one of the girls is chased through the woods and up into a lighthouse. There is a struggle, and she stabs the man attacking her, he dies.
  • In the season four finale, a man is shot in the stomach.
  • A girl threatens to kill a group of girls, but one of their friends comes and knocks her off a stage, and the girl dies. You can see a puddle of blood around her head.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Season 1 features some drug references, such as in one episode whereby Emily's mother finds some drug paraphernalia in her girlfriend's backpack implied through shots of two rolled cigarettes and some grass-like substance inside a metal tin. No explicit drug-taking is depicted and other drug references are mostly verbal with references to getting "high", looking "stoned", etc.
  • Season Two includes verbal drug references in this season, particularly with references to one of the minor male characters who supposedly smokes weed; some verbal references to the abuse of painkillers and steroids; some verbal references of how Maya's parents allegedly found a joint in her belongings again, but without any depictions of actual drug-taking.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • When a girl is being chased in the forest, it is quite intense, and she ends up stabbing the man chasing her.
  • Season 3 focuses on how Emily tries to come to terms and cope with Maya's death, while rekindling her interest in an old flame. This is somewhat distressing.
