Every day until Halloween, The Hollywood Reporter will be speaking to a notable horror director. Previously in this series: 'ABCs of Death 2's Alejandro Brugués "I was home alone at seven years old and saw Night of the Living Dead, and that f---ed my little child brain," says Marvin Kren, who decades later made his feature debut with a zombie thriller of his own — the well-regarded Rammbock in 2010. Popular in the 1960s and early 1970s with more rare appearances in the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s, the anthology-style horror film has made a solid resurgence in recent years with such portmanteau releases as The ABCs of Death films and the V/H/S series.
With Mexico Barbaro, Fear Paris and other projects in various stages of completion, the anthology horror film looks to continue to be an important part of the horror cinema landscape.
Some anthology films employ a framing or wraparound sequence in an attempt to connect the segments that make up the film while others dispense with this classic Amicus-style approach entirely and simply present a collection of short films connected by genre.
Either way, a horror anthology film is ultimately about the quality of its individual segments and this article will take you on a tour of the greatest horror anthology segments of all time.

Ever since seeing Rammbock: Berlin Undead – a romantic zombie flick with ten times more heart than Warm Bodies – I’ve been excitedly awaiting Marvin Kren’s creature feature follow-up Blood Glacier. Promoting itself as Austria’s answer to The Thing, Kren’s ability to scare and entertain seemed perfectly suited for silly practical effects and grotesque monster work, but before I could even enjoy an onslaught of vicious, hybrid animals, one simple decision turned what could have been a fun B-Movie into a schlocky, dismissible dud. What decision might that be? English. Language. Dubbing. Some people may complain about “multitasking,” reading subtitles and watching cinema at the time, but I must beg international markets to stop taking the “easy” way out for viewers. Would you rather have to read something, or suffer through flat, monotone voices that don’t even match moving lips? When a dog has the most genuine dialogue through a film,...

Austrian director Marvin Kren (Rammbock) is currently filming his entry for the upcoming horror anthology The ABCs of Death 2, which makes it a good time to check out some of his early work. The Station is a German language horror movie reminiscent of John Carpenter's The Thing in both appearance and execution. However, it would be easy to overlook such a promising night in because, for reasons unknown, the title has been changed to Blood Glacier for its U.K. bow. Leading contender for worst title of the year, surely? A team of technicians and scientists at an alpine research station discover a glacier of blood (now I get it) high in the mountains. Testing the red liquid oozing from the ice, they discover a new alien organism with the capability of transforming the local wildlife into horrific hybrids. With the Minister of the Environment hiking to the station for an official visit,...

Austrian director Marvin Kren (Rammbock) is currently filming his entry for upcoming horror anthology The ABCs of Death 2, which means it's a good time to check out some of his early work. The Station (known as Blood Glacier over here) is a German language horror movie reminiscent of John Carpenter's The Thing, heading to U.K. DVD on January 27, 2014. Marvin Kren broke into the international horror circuit in 2011 with his zombie feature Rammbock, and The Station looks like it could be another entertaining diversion for horror movie enthusiasts. Beautiful cinematography and a good use of special effects suggest that The Station could be worth a punt. Check out the trailer below. Synopsis: The gates of hell are made of ice in this tense horror thriller paying homage to The Thing and Assault on Precinct 13. Four technicians and scientists at an alpine research station discover a glacier of blood high in the mountains.

Copy Creature: Kren’s Sophomore Feature a Hybrid Derivative
Following his Berlin set zombie debut Rammbock, Austrian director Marvin Kren returns with The Station, an eco-horror-ish creature feature which was originally titled Glazius, now saddled with a downgraded vagary of a title that neither exudes originality or menace. Likewise, the film immediately establishes itself as a curious amalgamation of classic genre titles, with several of its select scenes blatant copies of memorable sequences from other films, most notably, John Carpenter’s The Thing (and no, Kren doesn’t seem to be making a meta statement by giving us a copy of a copy of a copy). While the film isn’t a complete misfire, its ever so light creature twist isn’t enough to make this memorable, and unless you’ve had the misfortune of never seeing anything else in the same vein, the film won’t really feel satisfactory...

All of the ingredients are in place for The Station to be a thrilling exercise in crowd pleasing horror. You've got a hot young director in Rammbock's Marvin Kren being given a significant boost in resources to prove what he can do. And you've got a compelling central premise that promises thrills and chills a'plenty with a multitude of bizarre creatures for shock value. Announcing nine out of ten titles from its 2013 lineup, Tiff’s Midnight Madness blazes in with a fever pitch, promising to be one of the most notable programs we’ve seen from the most perennially pleasing film festival sidebar dedicated to the horror genre.
Colin Geddes has placed the latest film from Lucky McKee, All Cheerleaders Die (co-directed by Chris Sivertson of I Know Who Killed Me fame) as the section’s opener and this marks the first time for horror alum McKee in the lineup (he usually premieres at Sundance, and if you remember, his last film, 2011’s The Woman got quite the notable reaction there). While Siverston’s name as co-director may arouse some naysaying, McKee is an excellent and exciting name to open with (see pic above).
It’s no surprise that Midnight Madness alum Eli Roth will premiere his latest effort, The Green Inferno, which looks...

If you missed Rammbock: Berlin Undead earlier this year, do yourself a favor and seek it out. It's in every store both online and off and is available on Netflix, etc. Once you see it we can pretty much guarantee you'll be excited for director Marvin Kren's next film Glazius.
Kren's new film stars Michael Fuith, Edita Malovcic and Brigitte Kren. Check out the first stills below and look for more soon.
Synopsis
Janek is a technician on a climate observation station high up in the Alps. He is a loner, the regularly changing scientists who share the rocky idyll with him are just tolerated by him. Making things more difficult is the approaching visit of the environment minister, which brings rivalries at the station to the boil.
So everyone involved is grateful when their barren routine is interrupted by a strange discovery. A red liquid pours from a nearby glacier,...

Austrian director Marvin Kren caused quite a stir amongst genre fans around the globe with his 2010 effort Rammbock: Berlin Undead. Despite clocking in right around the one hour mark - a run time that is, generally speaking, death for both festival programming and commercial distribution - Rammbock found a loyal following on the festival circuit and became a hit on VOD and DVD. And Kren is a huge part of why, the director showing an uncommon knack for blending kinetic action with compelling horror. And so fans have been waiting for what he may do next. And the answer to that question is upcoming creature feature Blugtgletscher (current English working title The Station), a film shot in the mountains of his native Austria.Janek is a...

Rammbock: Berlin Undead has been burdened by very diverse reviews and critical acceptance. Some seem to cherish the picture, while others firmly detest the film. While its nice to have supporters, anytime a film tips the scales with equal parts criticism and acclaim, it makes it an awfully daunting chore of determining whether the film is a worthy investment. Take my advice when I tell you that Rammbock is certainly a solid picture that offers p…...

Super, Trespass, Melancholia, Quarantine 2: Terminal, Black Death, We Are What We Are, Red State, Kidnapped, Rammbock: Berlin Undead, Phase 7 (Fase 7), Hobo With A Shotgun, The Shrine, Burke & Hare, Cold Fish, Atrocious, The Last Circus, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil , Outcast, The Pack (La Meute), The Human Centipede Part 2: Full Sequence, Chillerama. What do those films have in common? Theyre horror films (or films with enough intensity, gumption and violence for tertiary association) that incorporated Video On Demand into their distribution models in a major way this year. Some pretty exciting news here on Bd as Silke Olthoff took top honors at this years Schnitt Awards for her editing of Marvin Krens Berlin zombie movie Rammbock: Berlin Undead, the Bloody Disgusting Selects flick that's now available on DVD and VOD. The jury, which included last years Schnitt winner Monika Willi (The White Ribbon), praised Olthoffs successful splicing of the horror and romance genres. The zombie invasion is terrifyingly believable while the love story truly touching, the jury said in a statement. Both strands hold and build tension until the (films) finale. The Schnitt Prize for best documentary went to Stephan Krumbiegel and Volker Sattel for their editing of Sattels atomic energy doc Under Control while the up-and-coming honor went to Rolf Hellat for his edit of Corina Schingrubers short film I ovo je Beograd.

Do the sensibilities of Michael Haneke offend? If your answer is yes then stay far away from the directorial debut of Haneke casting director Markus Schleinzer. The first feature, Michael offers an exceedingly simple dramatic snapshot covering a period of five months in the life of Michael, a pedophile, and a ten year old kidnap victim he keeps locked in the basement. It would be an uncomfortable scenario for any cast and crew to bring to life but Scheinzer and his lead Michael Fuith (Rammbock: Berlin Undead [2010]) do a solid job of laying the groundwork for audiences to be drawn in to the disturbingly mundane details of a horrendously deviant crime scene. Evil? It is almost completely faceless here and yet also compelling. It...

Extinction - The G.M.O. Chronicles is a film which was shot in Germany, in English. Most recently, this title has entered post-production with shooting complete in 2009-10 and the film completed today. This is a tale that compares itself to 28 Days Later and I Am Legend. However, this is a lower budgeted feature, which focuses on the loneliness of a post-apocalyptic world. The loneliness is swept aside when a group of mutated creatures inhabit the scene. Have a look at the horrors of Extinction - The G.M.O. Chronicles with the first poster here and trailer inside.
There is certainly a German and North American enjoyment of zombie films, with Rammbock aka Siege of the Dead aka Rammbock: Berlin Undead shaking the cinematic cage in 2010. This film set Berlin alight with zombies, viruses and failed escapes. As well, Germany has a burgeoning independent film community, with smaller production companies like Cinema Ergo leading the way.

Without doing anything particularly innovative, Rammbock: Berlin Undead manages to be an entertaining zombie flick that never relents once it launches into mayhem. It does this by being a mere 63 minutes long making it a lean and taut zombie thriller. Director Marvin Kren’s film about the residents of an apartment complex banding together to survive the hordes of the dead rampaging through Berlin doesn’t waste any time going too far into character development or explanation, it just assumes the audience knows the genre and gives any necessary filler using newscasts as background noise. This is what more zombie features should aspire to, and you can’t help but hope for a sequel or additional chapters within the Rammbock world.

Zombies continue their dominance of the international horror film world (see France’s The Horde and Norway’s Dead Snow) with the release of the German zombie movie Rammbock: Berlin Undead on DVD from Vivendi on June 28 for a list price of $19.97.
Zombies invade Germany in Rammbock: Berlin Undead.
It’s the latest title in the Bloody Disgusting series of horror titles released through The Collective’s homevideo partnership with Vivendi Universal.
The movie zooms in on the heartbroken and clueless Michael (Michael Fuith), who arrives in Berlin to win back the heart of his ex-girlfriend Gabi (Anka Graczyk). But all doesn’t go exactly as planned as Gabi isn’t at home and Berlin is being rapidly overrun by bloodthirsty hordes of the undead. Michael quickly learns that his only friend is the teenager Harper (Theo Trebs, The White Ribbon), a plucky plumber’s apprentice in Gabi’s complex.

Salient Media’s Rammbock: Berlin Undead is one of the first acquisitions by Bloody-Disgusting Selects and I have now watched and completely enjoyed this German zombie tale!
First off, this is an original take on the zombie story. Director Marvin Kren’s Rammbock tells the story of Michael ( Michael Fuith ), a really likeable guy who has been dumped by the love of his life Gabi ( Anna Graczyk ) Michael has that don’t quit mentality (or maybe he’s a stalker) but he just can’t let go so he “politely” decides to return Gabi’s keys to her. This isn’t just your regular zombie outbreak story but it falls under what the viewer might call a zombie/love story maybe? You’ll see.
Michael arrives at Gabi’s place and she’s nowhere to be seen but there are some strange things going on, people are going nuts!
