What a DEVIL!
shoei5 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
WOW! What a DEVIL! Jason Dohring really did a great job! This sociopath really scared me to death.

His face told almost nothing. Well, I'm not Dr. Lightman after all. Jason Dohring made his character, either he felt pleased but not show it or he was provoked, these differences of emotions are almost invisible.

Jason Dohring is brilliant in this episode. His performance let me think of Edward Norton, his early years of performance in "Primal Fear."

When Edward Norton played the seemingly guiltless young altar boy, his performance did make me fell trembling with fear. Especially at the end, when he confessed to the lawyer after the whole trial, the smile/or seemingly smile showed everything.

To both of these two actors who challenge the acting of psychosis, BRAVO!

The best one for me so far

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is my favourite to date.

We see a young woman escaping at the beginning before being buried.

Cut to uni where an old friend of Dr Lightman has got him to fill in and lecture to some students. Predictably because there is no other way one of the students comes into the scene.

Jason Dohring is great at this, you get a hint at the beginning and he does his expressions/lack of really well. Given this is about micro expressions and the like this is what I have been waiting for.

There is a great line " One should not shag ones students especially not the psychopathic ones" sound advice there :).

Some good moments of interplay between the two protagonists.

Kelli Williams seems to take a back seat a bit in this episode, acting surprisingly nervous when they visit the parents.

Like the way they bring the stotylines from both teams together a bit of creepiness there.

Nearly wet myself when they are in the hospital....' well now you're here...go and bond with Valerie' you'll get it when it happens.

Looks like the psycho is getting the upper hand, some stereotyped classical music then a weird cut to grave digging, is this in the original version?

He does indeednowe the doctor 200 bucks.

There is a level of confidence in the storyline that Jason Bohring is an undiscovered psycopath, and this means it is an episode you want to sit and watch.

Really great acting...

Warning: Spoilers
Sometimes you just want a well written story, regardless if the actual base story itself has been done before, if it is done with enough originality and very good acting, it can turn into something much better than a story that went for a good sounding plot, etc, but at the sacrifice of things like character, etc. And this episodes absolutely nails the character acting, which to me is a big part of why I like the show, in addition to being usually interesting plots yes, and yes, Lie To Me usually has some pretty original ideas, and plots in their stories, and it is one of the reasons I liked the show. So this isn't going to win that many stars on plot, ie a serial killer playing a game of cat and mouse with our 'detective' or 'foremost authority on deception, and human behavior'.... And of course in the end, it has the completely cliche scene of the detective sitting opposite the killer, audience getting that final pay off, the 'final twist' we only learn at that time.

So you know pretty much how things will wrap up, saving last victim(or next), catching the killer, etc.

But the fact is, because it has some of the best acting in the entire series i have seen so far, it elevates the episode to one of my favorites, definitely for the entire show.

The scene where Ria Torres talks with the serial killers last victim who got away is just low key, amazing, one probably people won't even realize as they are watching, just how good, the actress who pays the victim is. As she descibes what he did it's so believable, she really is an amazing actress whoever she is. And completely captivating.

And then guy who plays the serial killer just looks the part, sad to say, almost feel sorry for the guy, cause he absolutely gives off those vibes just looking at him. So he nails that side as well, Tim Roth always is facinating to watch on screen, and along wtih the rest of the cast is great... again.

So yea, not the most original episode, but overall ends up being one of it's best because the character acting by everyone is so good... even the bit players, etc...

Too much clichee
interestingstuff31 July 2022
This is the 24th episode of the show and 24th episode where Cal sees something no one else sees, people don't believe him and Cal is proven correct at the end where people say "wow you were right again, you are so great, we couldn't see this coming but you could". Yawn.

People rate this episode so highly because let's face it, people LOVE seeing old recycled clichés on TV. You can recycle and use the same old clichés 100 times and people will fall in love with your show 100 times because that's what people want these days. They don't care for originality and they don't want to see anything new on TV.

This is why episodes like this get such high ratings and TV producers don't bother with originality anymore.

The Psychopath and the UFO
claudio_carvalho17 January 2024
Dr. Lightman is invited to give a lecture for college students by his former professor and affair Helen Dezekis. He goes with Dr. Foster and interviews the student Martin Walker in front of the class in the auditorium. Soon he learns that Martin is a sociopath and present love affair of Helen. However, Dr. Foster does not see any sign in Martin to support Cal's findings and Helen does not believe him. Soon he finds that there is a female student missing and he says that Martin is the responsible. Meanwhile, Loker and Torres interview the renowned high school teacher Sam Hendricks since he says that he saw an UFO and Dean Warren wants to fire him. Loker and Torres sees a footage filmed by one of his students and seek out the truth to save his job.

"Beat the Devil" is a great episode of "Lie to Me" with two excellent segments. The lead one shows a duel between Cal Lightman and a sadistic sociopath with a good conclusion. The other segment shows Loker and Torres finding that the air force representative is lying, and, in the end, he lies and gives a useful explanation to save the teacher's job and not compromise the security of the USA. My vote is nine.
